    Utilizing image texture to detect land-cover change in Mediterranean coastal wetlands

    Land-use/cover change dynamics were investigated in a Mediterranean coastal wetland. Change Vector Analysis (CVA) without and with image texture derived from the co-occurrence matrix and variogram were evaluated for detecting land-use/cover change. Three Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) scenes recorded on July 1985, 1993 and 2005 were used, minimizing change detection error caused by seasonal differences. Images were geometrically, atmospherically and radiometrically corrected. CVA without and with texture measures were implemented and assessed using reference images generated by object-based supervised classification. These outputs were used for cross-classification to determine the ‘from–to’ change used to compare between techniques. The Landsat TM image bands together with the variogram yielded the most accurate change detection results, with Kappa statistics of 0.7619 and 0.7637 for the 1985–1993 and 1993–2005 image pairs, respectively

    Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s = 7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results

    Jet size dependence of single jet suppression in lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s(NN)) = 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    Measurements of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions at the LHC provide direct sensitivity to the physics of jet quenching. In a sample of lead-lead collisions at sqrt(s) = 2.76 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 7 inverse microbarns, ATLAS has measured jets with a calorimeter over the pseudorapidity interval |eta| < 2.1 and over the transverse momentum range 38 < pT < 210 GeV. Jets were reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with values for the distance parameter that determines the nominal jet radius of R = 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5. The centrality dependence of the jet yield is characterized by the jet "central-to-peripheral ratio," Rcp. Jet production is found to be suppressed by approximately a factor of two in the 10% most central collisions relative to peripheral collisions. Rcp varies smoothly with centrality as characterized by the number of participating nucleons. The observed suppression is only weakly dependent on jet radius and transverse momentum. These results provide the first direct measurement of inclusive jet suppression in heavy ion collisions and complement previous measurements of dijet transverse energy imbalance at the LHC.Comment: 15 pages plus author list (30 pages total), 8 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters B.     O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a evolução da ĂĄrea minerada no QuadrilĂĄtero FerrĂ­fero (QF), Minas Gerais, e quantificar a ĂĄrea coberta com vegetação florestal nativa que foi suprimida por esta atividade durante os Ășltimos 26 anos. Foram utilizadas imagens TM/Landsat 5 correspondente a ĂĄrea de estudo nos anos de 1985, 1989, 2000 e 2011. Para cada ano de anĂĄlise, utilizando tĂ©cnicas de interpretação visual de imagens, foram criados polĂ­gonos identificando e delimitando as ĂĄreas mineradas. Para a anĂĄlise da supressĂŁo da vegetação florestal nativa pela mineração, as imagens de 1985 foram classificadas gerando um mapa temĂĄtico de uso e cobertura do solo do QF. Em seguida, os polĂ­gonos de mineração identificados em cada ano de anĂĄlise foram sobrepostos ao mapa da vegetação nativa possibilitando o cĂĄlculo da ĂĄrea de vegetação florestal nativa suprimida pela expansĂŁo da mineração. Entre os anos de 1985 a 2011, observou-se aumento de 213% na ĂĄrea minerada no QF. As ĂĄreas suprimidas de vegetação florestal nativa entre os anos de 1985 a 1989, 1989 a 2000 e 2000 a 2011 corresponderam respectivamente a 324,42 ha, 948,98 ha e 1989,68 ha, com uma perda total de vegetação nativa de 3.263,07 ha

    A search for the decay B+→K+ΜΜˉB^+ \to K^+ \nu \bar{\nu}

    We search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay B+→K+ΜΜˉB^+ \to K^+ \nu \bar{\nu} in a data sample of 82 fb−1^{-1} collected with the {\sl BABAR} detector at the PEP-II B-factory. Signal events are selected by examining the properties of the system recoiling against either a reconstructed hadronic or semileptonic charged-B decay. Using these two independent samples we obtain a combined limit of B(B+→K+ΜΜˉ)<5.2×10−5{\mathcal B}(B^+ \to K^+ \nu \bar{\nu})<5.2 \times 10^{-5} at the 90% confidence level. In addition, by selecting for pions rather than kaons, we obtain a limit of B(B+→π+ΜΜˉ)<1.0×10−4{\mathcal B}(B^+ \to \pi^+ \nu \bar{\nu})<1.0 \times 10^{-4} using only the hadronic B reconstruction method.Comment: 7 pages, 8 postscript figures, submitted to Phys.     High-reflectivity broadband distributed Bragg reflector lattice matched to ZnTe

    We report on the realization of a high quality distributed Bragg reflector with both high and low refractive index layers lattice matched to ZnTe. Our structure is grown by molecular beam epitaxy and is based on binary compounds only. The high refractive index layer is made of ZnTe, while the low index material is made of a short period triple superlattice containing MgSe, MgTe, and ZnTe. The high refractive index step of Delta_n=0.5 in the structure results in a broad stopband and the reflectivity coefficient exceeding 99% for only 15 Bragg pairs.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
