Sure Start Blacon reach report, April 2004 - March 2005
This project report discusses Sure Start computerised records (covering personal details of all registrations within the Sure Start programme and records of each serivce and which service users have accessed them) which allow the 'reach' of the local programme across Blacon to be established between 1 April 2004 and 31 March 2005
Signs in Sophocles: Modern Approaches to PTSD in the Ajax
This project explores the relationship between ancient Greek tragedy and modern psychology, specifically focusing on instances of PTSD, both through the descriptions of symptoms and the cultural reaction to such trauma responses in both ancient and modern sources. The case study from ancient Greece is Sophocles’ play, Ajax, a dramatic depiction of a post-PTSD soldier who has a mental break and is faced with either living with what he has done or committing suicide. The primary objective of this project is to illustrate what modern psychological theory can reveal about the portrayal of PTSD in Greek tragedy and therefore also what we can learn about the understanding of PTSD in 5th-century BCE Athens through my new translation of selections from the play. Though the manner in which wars are fought has drastically changed since 450 BCE, the findings demonstrate that the experience of combat trauma and the challenges of homecoming seem to transcend time
Prosperity, Inclusivity and Sustainability across UK Regions:Policy Briefing
This policy briefing reports on a study to assess economic growth, inclusivity and sustainability across UK regions in terms of both current performance (in 2018) and change in performance (between 2013 and 2018). It is part of a larger, on-going (ESRC-funded) project on ‘Local Institutions, Productivity, Sustainability and Inclusivity Trade-offs’ (LIPSIT).We developed a regional typology from proxy measures of economic prosperity, inclusivity and sustainability. These key indicators, plus a description of the method we adopted can be found in the Technical Annex. The key findings from the policy briefing are:-Economic prosperity is highest in London and the South East, however, London is amongst the least inclusive regions in the UK. The most inclusive region is the West of England.- Assessing performance change across regions shows low levels of economic prosperity growth in the North and East of England compared to average-to-good improvements in the South.- Also revealed are several high-growth hot-spots, including the West Midlands. On measures of sustainability, London and surrounding areas, the West of England, Manchester and Tees Valley perform well.- While typically the most prosperous areas are also the most inclusive, there are wide variations over the short-term in the performance of UK regions towards achieving inclusive growth outcomes.- Some regions achieving high growth on measures of economic prosperity are also managing to achieve greater equality across socio-economic groups and/or increase levels of sustainability.- For other regions achieving high growth on measures of economic prosperity there appear to be trade-offs involved with no or low improvement in inclusivity and/or sustainability.- The results indicate different economic growth trajectories across regions, revealing the most dynamic, emerging, marginalised and declining regions in the UK. These provide insight for targeting support as well as from where lessons can be learnt for regions looking to improve prosperity

Toxicity, transfer and depuration of anatoxin-a (cyanobacterial neurotoxin) in medaka fish exposed by single-dose gavage
International audienceThe proliferations of cyanobacteria are increasingly prevalent in many rivers and water bodies due especially to eutrophication. This work aims to study in female medaka fish the toxicity, the transfer and the depuration of the anatoxin-a, a neurotoxin produced by benthic cyanobacterial biofilms. This work will provide answers regarding acute toxicity induced by single gavage by anatoxin-a and to the risks of exposure by ingestion of contaminated fish flesh, considering that data on these aspects remain particularly limited. The oral LD50 and NOAEL of a single dose of (±)-anatoxin-a were determined at 11.50 and 6.67 μg.g-1, respectively. Subsequently, the toxico-kinetics of the (±)-anatoxin-a was observed in the guts, the livers and the muscles of female medaka fish for 10 days. Anatoxin-a was quantified by high-resolution qTOF mass spectrometry coupled upstream to a UHPLC chromatographic chain. The toxin could not be detected in the liver after 12 h, and in the gut and muscle after 3 days. Overall, the medaka fish do not appear to accumulate (±)-anatoxin-a and to largely recover after 24 h following a single sub-acute oral liquid exposure at the NOAEL

What drives change? A framework to observe and understand broad-‐ scale change in river basins
Development in river basins is strongly influenced by a range of non-‐random factors, called global drivers. These can present a bewildering array of effects that confound concerted action. This report summarizes these effects with the CPWF’s six basins and presents a method of visualizing them together within a process of scenario visualization
