    Sampling fleeces to estimate yield of clean wool

    Clean fleece weight is of primary importance in a programme of sheep selection which uses fleece measurement as an adjunct to visual appraisal. Various techniques have been reported for estimating the clean scoured yield of whole fleeces from small samples. In the present study, unskirted Merino fleeces were divided into regions and scoured. Fleeces from 85 Merino ewes and wethers were skirted, separated into 12 portions according to position, and scoured. Yield of clean wool decreased from shoulder to rump, and the yields along the back were slightly higher than those on the sides. The yield of all regions was highly correlated with that of the whole fleece and that of the skirted fleece, but the midside region is the most convenient sampling site

    Food web structure and mercury transfer in two contrasting Ugandan highland crater lakes (East Africa)

    Abstract in English and FrenchVolcanic crater lakes scattered throughout western Uganda are important local sources of water and fish. Two representative but contrasting crater lakes near the Kibale National Park were sampled in 2000; the hyper-eutrophic Lake Saka, which is highly affected by agricultural practices, and the mesotrophic Lake Nkuruba that is still surrounded by intact forest. The food web structures in these two lakes were assessed using stable nitrogen (d15N) and carbon (d13C) isotope analyses, and the mercury (THg) transfer patterns were quantified. The d15N results indicate that food webs in both lakes are abbreviated, with only one to two trophic levels from primary consumers. The Lake Saka biota had distinctively enriched d13C values compared with those in Lake Nkuruba, which may be due to 12C-limited phytoplankton blooms in this lake. In Lake Nkuruba, two introduced tilapiine species and the introduced guppy Poecilia reticulata fed predominantly upon invertebrates and decomposed terrestrial plant material. In Lake Saka, the introduced Nile perch Lates niloticus appeared to occupy the top trophic position, but stable isotope values of the endemic haplochromine cichlids exclude those as Nile perch prey items. THg was found to biomagnify through the food web, reaching highest concentrations in P. reticulata in Nkuruba, which tended to be higher than for L. niloticus in Saka, suggesting increased bioavailability of THg in Nkuruba. Maximum THg concentrations in fish never approached WHO recommended guidelines (200 ng g-1) designed to protect at-risk groups

    The Uncertainty in Newton's Constant and Precision Predictions of the Primordial Helium Abundance

    The current uncertainty in Newton's constant, G_N, is of the order of 0.15%. For values of the baryon to photon ratio consistent with both cosmic microwave background observations and the primordial deuterium abundance, this uncertainty in G_N corresponds to an uncertainty in the primordial 4He mass fraction, Y_P, of +-1.3 x 10^{-4}. This uncertainty in Y_P is comparable to the effect from the current uncertainty in the neutron lifetime, which is often treated as the dominant uncertainty in calculations of Y_P. Recent measurements of G_N seem to be converging within a smaller range; a reduction in the estimated error on G_N by a factor of 10 would essentially eliminate it as a source of uncertainty in the calculation of the primordial 4He abundance.Comment: 3 pages, no figures, fixed typos, to appear in Phys.     Atom focusing by far-detuned and resonant standing wave fields: Thin lens regime

    The focusing of atoms interacting with both far-detuned and resonant standing wave fields in the thin lens regime is considered. The thin lens approximation is discussed quantitatively from a quantum perspective. Exact quantum expressions for the Fourier components of the density (that include all spherical aberration) are used to study the focusing numerically. The following lens parameters and density profiles are calculated as functions of the pulsed field area θ\theta : the position of the focal plane, peak atomic density, atomic density pattern at the focus, focal spot size, depth of focus, and background density. The lens parameters are compared to asymptotic, analytical results derived from a scalar diffraction theory for which spherical aberration is small but non-negligible (θ≫1\theta \gg 1). Within the diffraction theory analytical expressions show that the focused atoms in the far detuned case have an approximately constant background density 0.5(1−0.635θ−1/2)0.5(1-0.635\theta ^{- 1/2}) while the peak density behaves as % 3.83\theta ^{1/2}, the focal distance or time as θ−1(1+1.27θ−1/2)\theta ^{-1}(1+1.27\theta ^{- 1/2}), the focal spot size as 0.744θ−3/40.744\theta ^{-3/4}, and the depth of focus as 1.91θ−3/21.91\theta ^{- 3/2}. Focusing by the resonant standing wave field leads to a new effect, a Rabi- like oscillation of the atom density. For the far-detuned lens, chromatic aberration is studied with the exact Fourier results. Similarly, the degradation of the focus that results from angular divergence in beams or thermal velocity distributions in traps is studied quantitatively with the exact Fourier method and understood analytically using the asymptotic results. Overall, we show that strong thin lens focusing is possible with modest laser powers and with currently achievable atomic beam characteristics.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figure

    FTIR spectroscopy can predict organic matter quality in regenerating cutover peatlands.

    International audienceVegetational changes during the restoration of cutover peatlands leave a legacy in terms of the organic matter quality of the newly formed peat. Current efforts to restore peatlands at a large scale therefore require low cost, and high throughout, techniques to monitor the evolution of organic matter. In this study, we assessed the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of the organic matter in peat samples at various stages of peatland regeneration from five European countries. Using predictive partial least squares analyses, we were able to reconstruct both peat C:N ratio and carbohydrate signatures, but not the micromorphological composit ion of vegetation remains, from the FTIR datasets. Despite utilising different size fractions, both carbohydrate (< 200 μm fraction) and FTIR (bulk soil) analyses report on the composition of plant cell wall constituents in the peat and therefore essentially reveal the composition of the parent vegetational material. This suggests that FTIR analysis of peat may be used successfully for evaluation of the present and future organic matter composition of peat in monitoring of restoration efforts

    The Biology Instrument for the Viking Mars Mission

    Two Viking spacecraft have successfully soft landed on the surface of Mars. Each carries, along with other scientific instruments, one biology laboratory with three different experiments designed to search for evidence of living microorganisms in material sampled from the Martian surface. This 15.5-kg biology instrument which occupies a volume of almost 28.3 dm3 is the first to carry out an in situ search for extraterrestrial life on a planet. The three experiments are called the pyrolytic release, labeled release, and gas exchange. The pyrolytic release experiment has the capability to measure the fixation of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide into organic matter. The labeled release experiment detects metabolic processes by monitoring the production of volatile carbon compounds from a radioactively labeled nutrient mixture. The gas exchange experiment monitors the gas changes in the head space above a soil sample which is either incubated in a humid environment or supplied with a rich organic nutrient solution. Each experiment can analyze a soil sample as it is received from the surface or, as a control, analyze a soil which has been heated to above 160C. Each instrument has the capability to receive four different soils dug from the Martian surface and perform a number of analysis cycles depending on the particular experiment. Berlin, Germany: Springer Verlag.In this chapter we will specifically go into the question of how prospective Learning Network users may be convinced of these benefits, for that is likely to be the necessary condition for their active participation in any Learning Network. Their question would be ‘Why should I participate?’, this chapter inventories an-swers to that question, which are then translated into a few guidelines for those contemplating to set up a particular, topic-bound Learning Network. Two kinds of answer are distinguished. Proximate answers, which affect the decision to partici-pate here and now; and ultimate answers, which motivate participation, but only in the long run, after the decision to participate has already been taken. Both are im-portant, the former to persuade people to participate, the latter to persuade people to keep participating.
