    Mirror Duality in Convex Optimization

    While first-order optimization methods are usually designed to efficiently reduce the function value f(x)f(x), there has been recent interest in methods efficiently reducing the magnitude of f(x)\nabla f(x), and the findings show that the two types of methods exhibit a certain symmetry. In this work, we present mirror duality, a one-to-one correspondence between mirror-descent-type methods reducing function value and reducing gradient magnitude. Using mirror duality, we obtain the dual accelerated mirror descent (dual-AMD) method that efficiently reduces ψ(f(x))\psi^*(\nabla f(x)), where ψ\psi is a distance-generating function and ψ\psi^* quantifies the magnitude of f(x)\nabla f(x). We then apply dual-AMD to efficiently reduce f()q\|\nabla f(\cdot) \|_q for q[2,)q\in [2,\infty) and to efficiently compute ε\varepsilon-approximate solutions of the optimal transport problem

    Into-TTS : Intonation Template based Prosody Control System

    Intonations take an important role in delivering the intention of the speaker. However, current end-to-end TTS systems often fail to model proper intonations. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel, intuitive method to synthesize speech in different intonations using predefined intonation templates. Prior to the acoustic model training, speech data are automatically grouped into intonation templates by k-means clustering, according to their sentence-final F0 contour. Two proposed modules are added to the end-to-end TTS framework: intonation classifier and intonation encoder. The intonation classifier recommends a suitable intonation template to the given text. The intonation encoder, attached to the text encoder output, synthesizes speech abiding the requested intonation template. Main contributions of our paper are: (a) an easy-to-use intonation control system covering a wide range of users; (b) better performance in wrapping speech in a requested intonation with improved pitch distance and MOS; and (c) feasibility to future integration between TTS and NLP, TTS being able to utilize contextual information.     Fuel Consumption Prediction for a Passenger Ferry using Machine Learning and In-service Data: A Comparative Study

    As the importance of eco-friendly transportation increases, providing an efficient approach for marine vessel operation is essential. Methods for status monitoring with consideration to the weather condition and forecasting with the use of in-service data from ships requires accurate and complete models for predicting the energy efficiency of a ship. The models need to effectively process all the operational data in real-time. This paper presents models that can predict fuel consumption using in-service data collected from a passenger ship. Statistical and domain-knowledge methods were used to select the proper input variables for the models. These methods prevent over-fitting, missing data, and multicollinearity while providing practical applicability. Prediction models that were investigated include multiple linear regression (MLR), decision tree approach (DT), an artificial neural network (ANN), and ensemble methods.     What Motivates Software Piracy in China: Q-Methodology Perspective

    This study explores why Chinese consumers use pirated software programs and how they think about their illegal use, relying on Q methodology. We developed 32 Q statements that outline reasons for using pirated software and surveyed 30 respondents from public officials, and software companies employees to students, professors, researchers, and the public. We developed four Q factors to describe four types of response to the use of pirated software. One group addresses a normative legal response, the second makes an economic utility argument, the third calls for punishing violators, and the fourth claims that they find themselves facing an uncomfortable dilemma in having to choose between the cheapness of illegal software and its illegality. Chinese respondents believe that government intervention can reduce the extent of illegal use (normative legal) and that intellectual property should be protected (economic utility). Furthermore, they acknowledged that the illegal use of software is a socio-structural problem across all social groups rather than a problem of a specific demographic group, such as a group of teenagers. Future research is required to explore not only whether or not perceptions regarding the use of illegal software vary from country to country but also how Confucian culture and norms are related to attitudes about the widespread use of counterfeit products in Asian countries

    Tip-Enhanced Raman Scattering Imaging of Two-Dimensional Tungsten Disulfide with Optimized Tip Fabrication Process

    We successfully achieve the tip-enhanced nano Raman scattering images of a tungsten disulfide monolayer with optimizing a fabrication method of gold nanotip by controlling the concentration of etchant in an electrochemical etching process. By applying a square-wave voltage supplied from an arbitrary waveform generator to a gold wire, which is immersed in a hydrochloric acid solution diluted with ethanol at various ratios, we find that both the conical angle and radius of curvature of the tip apex can be varied by changing the ratio of hydrochloric acid and ethanol. We also suggest a model to explain the origin of these variations in the tip shape. From the systematic study, we find an optimal condition for achieving the yield of similar to 60% with the radius of similar to 34 nm and the cone angle of similar to 35 degrees. Using representative tips fabricated under the optimal etching condition, we demonstrate the tip-enhanced Raman scattering experiment of tungsten disulfide monolayer grown by a chemical vapor deposition method with a spatial resolution of similar to 40 nm and a Raman enhancement factor of similar to 4,760. © The Author(s) 2017

    Severe Paradoxical Reaction Requiring Tracheostomy in a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-negative Patient with Cervical Lymph Node Tuberculosis

    During drug treatment of tuberculous lymphadenitis, paradoxical response (PR) may occasionally occur. Continued treatment or lymph node aspiration improves PR without severe sequelae. However, we report a case of severe PR in a patient with cervical lymph node tuberculosis causing airway obstruction due to retropharyngeal lymph node swelling during antituberculous treatment. Tracheostomy and drainage of the node were performed to secure the airway. Possible airway obstruction due to PR must be suspected when cervical lymph node tuberculosis involves the retropharyngeal lymph node
