    Sound field separation technique using the principle of double layer patch acoustic radiation modes

    In order to solve the problems of near-field acoustic holography in applications such as external interference and aperture effects, a sound field separation technique using the principle of double layer patch acoustic radiation modes is proposed in this paper. The radiated acoustic pressures over two planar surfaces at certain distances from the sources are calculated first. Then, the effects resulting from the backscattering interference in non-free sound fields can be eliminated by a double-layer sound field separation technique. Next, data interpolation and extrapolation are performed on the separated data to increase the sound source's pressures on the holographic plane equivalently for holographic images with higher spatial resolution. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that good agreements can be obtained with few measuring points

    Why do people choose courts to resolve disputes? A fuzzy-set analysis of Chinese citizens’ judicial reliance

    We use the concept of judicial reliance to describe the willingness and extent to which citizens seek the help of the court in a dispute. There are obvious local differences in the degree of judicial reliance in different provinces, with some citizens more willing to resort to the courts to settle disputes, whereas others are indifferent to the courts. Based on the judicial survey data of 31 provinces in China, we use fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis to explore the possible reasons for differences in citizens’ judicial reliance in China. We find that citizens’ judicial reliance is deeply influenced and restricted by five judicial conditions: transparency, corruption, independence, procedure, and professionalism. These causal conditions influence and interact with each other, thus forming six configurations that produce high judicial reliance. Among these six configurations, judicial professionalism is always the core condition. In recent years, China has indeed attached great importance to the construction of judicial professionalism, which not only optimizes the quality of the internal personnel of the court but also strengthens the public’s recognition of the court

    The Development of LLMs for Embodied Navigation

    In recent years, the rapid advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) such as the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) has attracted increasing attention due to their potential in a variety of practical applications. The application of LLMs with Embodied Intelligence has emerged as a significant area of focus. Among the myriad applications of LLMs, navigation tasks are particularly noteworthy because they demand a deep understanding of the environment and quick, accurate decision-making. LLMs can augment embodied intelligence systems with sophisticated environmental perception and decision-making support, leveraging their robust language and image-processing capabilities. This article offers an exhaustive summary of the symbiosis between LLMs and embodied intelligence with a focus on navigation. It reviews state-of-the-art models, research methodologies, and assesses the advantages and disadvantages of existing embodied navigation models and datasets. Finally, the article elucidates the role of LLMs in embodied intelligence, based on current research, and forecasts future directions in the field.     Smoking Experimentation among Elementary School Students in China: Influences from Peers, Families, and the School Environment

    The aim of this study was to investigate experimentation with smoking among primary school students in China. Data were acquired from a recent survey of 4,073 students in grades 4 to 6 (ages 9–12) in 11 primary schools of Ningbo City. The questions were adapted from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS). Results suggest that although the Chinese Ministry of Education (MOE) encourages smoke-free schools, experimentation with cigarettes remains a serious problem among primary school students in China. Peers, family members, and the school environment play important roles in influencing smoking experimentation among students. Having a friend who smoked, seeing a family member smoke, and observing a teacher smoking on campus predicted a higher risk of experimentation with smoking; the exposure to anti-tobacco materials at school predicted a lower risk of experimentation with smoking. The evidence suggests that public health practitioners and policymakers should seek to ensure the implementation of smoke-free policies and that intervention should target young people, families, and communities to curb the commencement of smoking among children and adolescents in China

    Association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and type 2 diabetes mellitus among Chinese: The Beijing longitudinal study of aging

    Background: Some previous studies on different populations have yielded inconsistent findings with respect to the relationship between levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and future type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) incidence. This study was designed to gain further insight into this relationship through a cohort study with a 25-year follow-up duration. Methods: In total, 1462 individuals that were 55 years of age or older and were free of T2DM at baseline were enrolled in the present study. T2DM incidence among this study population was detected through self-reported diagnoses or the concentration of fasting plasma glucose. The data were derived from nine surveys conducted from 1992 to 2017. The correlation between HDL-C levels and the T2DM risk was assessed through Cox proportional-hazards model and proportional hazards model for the sub-distribution with time-dependent variables. Results: Over the follow-up period, 120 participants were newly diagnosed with new-onset T2DM. When research participants were separated into four groups on the basis for quartiles of their levels of HDL-C measured at baseline, and incidence of diabetes declined with higher baseline HDL-C levels at 12.60, 9.70, 5.38, and 5.22 per 1000 person-years, respectively. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) were 0.98 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.62–1.55), 0.48 (95% CI: 0.27–0.85) and 0.44 (95% CI: 0.25–0.80) for individuals with HDL-C levels within the 1.15–1.39, 1.40–1.69, and ≥ 1.70 mmol/L ranges relative to participants with HDL-C levels \u3c 1.15 mmol/L. Multiple sensitivity analyses similarly revealed reduced risk of diabetes incidence with increased HDL-C levels. Incorporating the levels of HDL-C into a multivariate model significantly enhanced the overall power of the predictive model (P values were 0.0296, 0.0011, respectively, for 5- and 10-year risk of diabetes). Conclusions: Levels of HDL-C were independently and negatively associated with the risk of the new-onset T2DM among middle-aged and elderly Chinese

    Associations between social and intellectual activities with cognitive trajectories in Chinese middle-aged and older adults: A nationally representative cohort study

    BACKGROUND: Associations between the frequency of social and intellectual activities and cognitive trajectories are understudied in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. We aimed to examine this association in a nationally representative longitudinal study. METHODS: The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) is a nationally representative sample of Chinese middle-aged and older participants. The frequency of social and intellectual activities was measured at baseline. Interview-based cognitive assessments of orientation and attention, episodic memory, and visuospatial skills and the calculation of combined global scores were assessed every 2 years from 2011 to 2016. Cognitive aging trajectories over time were analyzed using group-based trajectory modeling, and the associations of the trajectory memberships with social and intellectual activities were analyzed using multinomial logistic regression. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were reported. RESULTS: Among 8204 participants aged 50-75 years at baseline, trajectory analysis identified three longitudinal patterns of cognitive function based on the global cognitive scores: persistently low trajectory (n = 1550, 18.9%), persistently moderate trajectory (n = 3194, 38.9%), and persistently high trajectory (n = 3460, 42.2%). After adjustment for sociodemographic variables, lifestyles, geriatric symptoms, and health conditions, more frequent intellectual activities (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.38-0.77) and social activities (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.65-0.95) were both associated with a lower likelihood of being in the persistently low trajectory for global cognitive function. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggested that more frequent social and intellectual activities were associated with more favorable cognitive aging trajectories

    Minocycline protects neurons against glial cells-mediated bilirubin neurotoxicity

    Unconjugated bilirubin, the end product of heme catabolism and antioxidant, induced brain damage in human neonates is a well-recognized clinical syndrome. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying bilirubin neurotoxicity remain unclear. To characterize the sequence of events leading to bilirubin-induced neurotoxicity, we investigated whether bilirubin-induced glial activation was involved in bilirubin neurotoxicity by exposing co-cultured rat glial cells and cerebellar granule neurons (CGN) to bilirubin. We found that bilirubin could markedly induce the expression of TNF-α and iNOS in glial cells, and even at low concentrations, the co-culture of glial cells with neurons significantly enhances neurotoxicity of bilirubin. Pretreatment of the co-cultured cells with minocycline protected CGN from glia-mediated bilirubin neurotoxicity and inhibited overexpression of TNF-α and iNOS in glia. Furthermore, we found that high doses of bilirubin were able to induce glial injury, and minocycline attenuated bilirubin-induced glial cell death. Our data suggest that glial cells play an important role in brain damage caused by bilirubin, and minocycline blocks bilirubin-induced encephalopathy possibly by directly and indirectly inhibiting neuronal death pathways
