Time delays and energy transport velocities in three dimensional ideal cloaking
We obtained the energy transport velocity distribution for a three
dimensional ideal cloak explicitly. Near the operation frequency, the energy
transport velocity has rather peculiar distribution. The velocity along a line
joining the origin of the cloak is a constant, while the velocity approaches
zero at the inner boundary of the cloak. A ray pointing right into the origin
of the cloak will experience abrupt changes of velocities when it impinges on
the inner surface of the cloak. This peculiar distribution causes infinite time
delays for the ideal cloak within a geometric optics description.Comment: A scaling factor is added to convert the parameter \tau into the

Roles of the Bloom's syndrome helicase in the maintenance of genome stability
The RecQ family of DNA helicases is highly conserved in evolution from bacteria to humans. Of the five known human RecQ family members, three (BLM, WRN and RECQ4, which cause Bloom's syndrome, Werner's syndrome and Rothmund-Thomson syndrome respectively) are mutated in distinct clinical disorders associated with cancer predisposition and/or premature aging. BLM forms part of a multienzyme complex including topoisomerase IIIalpha, replication protein A and a newly identified factor called BLAP75. Together, these proteins play a role in the resolution of DNA structures that arise during the process of homologous recombination repair. In the absence of BLM, cells show genomic instability and a high incidence of sister-chromatid exchanges. In addition to a DNA structure-specific helicase activity, BLM also catalyses Holliday-junction branch migration and the annealing of complementary single-stranded DNA molecules
Piezoelectric copolymer hydrophones for ultrasonic field characterization
Hydrophones to be used in the characterization of medical ultrasonic transducers have
been fabricated using a new polyvinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene (VF2/VF3)
copolymer. The copolymer has an advantage over VF2 in that it does not require
prestretching before poling. Thin copolymer films can be cast from solution and then
poled using the corona discharge method. As there is a need for small‐diameter
hydrophones to provide good spatial resolution in measuring highly focused ultrasonic
beams, hydrophones with diameter as small as 0.1 mm have been made. Both
needle‐type and line hydrophones have been tested and their performance reported. In
the case of line hydrophones, the output signal is proportional to the line integral of the
acoustic pressure and a computer tomographic technique has been used to reconstruct the
beam profiles
Role of aldehyde chemistry and NO_x concentrations in secondary organic aerosol formation
Aldehydes are an important class of products from atmospheric oxidation of hydrocarbons. Isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene), the most abundantly emitted atmospheric non-methane hydrocarbon, produces a significant amount of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) via methacrolein (a C_4-unsaturated aldehyde) under urban high-NO_x conditions. Previously, we have identified peroxy methacryloyl nitrate (MPAN) as the important intermediate to isoprene and methacrolein SOA in this NO_x regime. Here we show that as a result of this chemistry, NO_2 enhances SOA formation from methacrolein and two other α, β-unsaturated aldehydes, specifically acrolein and crotonaldehyde, a NO_x effect on SOA formation previously unrecognized. Oligoesters of dihydroxycarboxylic acids and hydroxynitrooxycarboxylic acids are observed to increase with increasing NO_2/NO ratio, and previous characterizations are confirmed by both online and offline high-resolution mass spectrometry techniques. Molecular structure also determines the amount of SOA formation, as the SOA mass yields are the highest for aldehydes that are α, β-unsaturated and contain an additional methyl group on the α-carbon. Aerosol formation from 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBO232) is insignificant, even under high-NO_2 conditions, as PAN (peroxy acyl nitrate, RC(O)OONO_2) formation is structurally unfavorable. At atmospherically relevant NO_2/NO ratios (3–8), the SOA yields from isoprene high-NO_x photooxidation are 3 times greater than previously measured at lower NO_2/NO ratios. At sufficiently high NO_2 concentrations, in systems of α, β-unsaturated aldehydes, SOA formation from subsequent oxidation of products from acyl peroxyl radicals+NO_2 can exceed that from RO_2+HO_2 reactions under the same inorganic seed conditions, making RO_2+NO_2 an important channel for SOA formation
Fluctuation-enhanced frequency mixing in a nonlinear micromechanical oscillator
We study noise-enhanced frequency mixing in an underdamped micromechanical
torsional oscillator. The oscillator is electrostatically driven into
bistability by a strong, periodic voltage at frequency . A second,
weak ac voltage is applied at a frequency close to . Due to
nonlinearity in the system, vibrations occur at both and
. White noise is injected into the excitation, allowing the
system to occasionally overcome the activation barrier and switch between the
two states. At the primary drive frequency where the occupations of the two
states are approximately equal, we observe noise-induced enhancement of the
oscillation amplitudes at both and the down-converted frequency
, in agreement with theoretical predictions. Such enhancement
occurs as a result of the noise-induced interstate transitions becoming
synchronous with the beating between the two driving frequencies.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure
Phase transition in the Higgs model of scalar dyons
In the present paper we investigate the phase transition
"Coulomb--confinement" in the Higgs model of abelian scalar dyons -- particles
having both, electric and magnetic , charges. It is shown that by dual
symmetry this theory is equivalent to scalar fields with the effective squared
electric charge e^{*2}=e^2+g^2. But the Dirac relation distinguishes the
electric and magnetic charges of dyons. The following phase transition
couplings are obtained in the one--loop approximation:
\alpha_{crit}=e^2_{crit}/4\pi\approx 0.19,
\tilde\alpha_{crit}=g^2_{crit}/4\pi\approx 1.29 and \alpha^*_{crit}\approx
1.48.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figure
