    Institutional Investment in REITs: Evidence and Implications

    It has been documented that institutional investors did not participate actively in the real estate investment trust (REIT) stock market prior to 1990 and that the percentage of institutional holdings of a REIT stock is positively correlated with the performance of the REIT stock. This article documents a reversal in trend in institutional investors’ preference for investing in REIT stocks and in other stocks. The study shows that prior to 1990, institutional investors invested more of their funds in other stocks than in REITs, whereas after 1990 they invest more of their funds in REITs than in other stocks in the market. The strategies of institutional investors investing in REITs are also analyzed. The findings of the study have implications for the agency and corporate control issues prevailing in the REIT stock market.

    Desire for experiential travel, avoidance of rituality and social esteem: An empirical study of consumer response to tourism innovation

    AbstractThis study investigates tourist consumption responses toward tourism innovation. To measure tourist responses, this study posits three key consumption drivers, namely social esteem, desire for experiential travel, and avoidance against rituality of tourism settings (a subscale of need for uniqueness) and models consumers’ affective response within the context of tourism innovation. It involves 295 respondents in an empirical survey. The findings affirm the three drivers toward tourist consumption behavior. Avoidance of rituality reflects tourist preference toward tourism product and service innovation. Desire for experiential travel and the pursuit of social esteem signify tourism management and marketing innovation. Social esteem, need for status and creative choice have significant influence on tourists’ affective responses. Acquiring unique tourist products, desire for experiential travel and seeking social esteem are important motivations for tourist consumption. The implications of the study enrich the existing literature of consumer behavior and tourist consumption in response to tourism innovation

    A Deep Learning Framework for Traffic Data Imputation Considering Spatiotemporal Dependencies

    Spatiotemporal (ST) data collected by sensors can be represented as multi-variate time series, which is a sequence of data points listed in an order of time. Despite the vast amount of useful information, the ST data usually suffer from the issue of missing or incomplete data, which also limits its applications. Imputation is one viable solution and is often used to prepossess the data for further applications. However, in practice, n practice, spatiotemporal data imputation is quite difficult due to the complexity of spatiotemporal dependencies with dynamic changes in the traffic network and is a crucial prepossessing task for further applications. Existing approaches mostly only capture the temporal dependencies in time series or static spatial dependencies. They fail to directly model the spatiotemporal dependencies, and the representation ability of the models is relatively limited.Comment: accepted at ICITE 202
