Energy Efficiency Optimization for a Multiuser IRS-aided MISO System with SWIPT
Combining simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) and an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a feasible scheme to enhance energy efficiency (EE) performance. In this paper, we investigate a multiuser IRS-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) system with SWIPT. For the purpose of maximizing the EE of the system, we jointly optimize the base station (BS) transmit beamforming vectors, the IRS reflective beamforming vector, and the power splitting (PS) ratios, while considering the maximum transmit power budget, the IRS reflection constraints, and the quality of service (QoS) requirements containing the minimum data rate and the minimum harvested energy of each user. The formulated EE maximization problem is non-convex and extremely complex. To tackle it, we develop an efficient alternating optimization (AO) algorithm by decoupling the original nonconvex problem into three subproblems, which are solved iteratively by using the Dinkelbach method. In particular, we apply the successive convex approximation (SCA) as well as the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) techniques to solve the non-convex transmit beamforming and reflective beamforming optimization subproblems. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the AO algorithm as well as the benefit of deploying IRS for enhancing the EE performance compared with the benchmark schemes
The new very small angle neutron scattering spectrometer at Laboratoire Leon Brillouin
The design and characteristics of the new very small angle neutron scattering
spectrometer under construction at the Laboratoire Leon Brillouin is described.
Its goal is to extend the range of scattering vectors magnitudes towards
2x10{-4} /A. The unique feature of this new spectrometer is a high resolution
two dimensional image plate detector sensitive to neutrons. The wavelength
selection is achieved by a double reflection supermirror monochromator and the
collimator uses a novel multibeam design
Extremely red radio galaxies
At least half the radio galaxies at z>1 in the 7C Redshift Survey have
extremely red colours (R-K>5), consistent with stellar populations which formed
at high redshift (z>5). We discuss the implications of this for the evolution
of massive galaxies in general and for the fraction of near-IR-selected EROs
which host AGN, a result which is now being tested by deep, hard X-ray surveys.
The conclusion is that many massive galaxies undergo at least two active
phases: one at z~5 when the black hole and stellar bulge formed and another at

Effect of statin treatment on the risk of cancer in patients with heart failure: A target trial emulation study
PURPOSE: A recent observational study suggested statins could reduce cancer diagnosis in patients with heart failure (HF). The findings need to be validated using robust epidemiological methods. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of statin treatment on the risk of cancer in patients with HF. METHODS: We conducted two target trial emulations using primary care data from IQVIA Medical Research Database-UK (2000 to 2019) with a clone-censor-weight design. The first emulated trial addressed the treatment initiation effect: initiating within 1âyear versus not initiating a statin after the HF diagnosis. The second emulated trial addressed the cumulative exposure effect: continuing a statin for â€3âyears, 3-6âyears, andâ>6âyears after initiation. The study outcomes were any incident cancer and site-specific cancer diagnoses. Weighted pooled logistic regression models were used to estimate 10-year risk ratios (RR). 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using non-parametric bootstrapping. RESULTS: The first emulated trial showed that, compared to no statin, statins did not reduce the cancer risk in patients with HF (RR, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.94-1.15). The second emulated trial showed that, compared to treatment â€3âyears, statins with longer durations did not reduce the cancer risk (3-6âyears: RR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.70-1.33. >6âyears: RR, 0.97; 95% CI, 0.79-1.26). No significant risk difference was observed on any site-specific cancer diagnoses. CONCLUSIONS: The results from the target trial emulations suggest that statin treatment is not associated with cancer risk in patients with HF
The impact of inter-cycle treatment delays on overall survival in patients with advanced-stage ovarian cancer
INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy forms the cornerstone of systemic treatment for advanced ovarian cancer, extending overall survival; however, drug-related toxicity can lead to treatment delays, potentially diminishing treatment efficacy. This study evaluated the impact of treatment delays on all-cause mortality of patients with ovarian cancer, to better inform decisions on patient management. METHODS: This retrospective, population-based cohort study included 1517 women with advanced-stage ovarian cancer, receiving first-line adjuvant or neoadjuvant chemotherapy in 2014 and 2015. The frequency of inter-cycle delays >7 days was calculated using drug administration dates. Kaplan-Meier estimates were used to compare 2-year overall survival (OS) between patients who were delayed and those treated to schedule. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to investigate the impact of treatment delay on all-cause mortality. Inverse probability of treatment weighting propensity scores were used to adjust for confounding variables. RESULTS: Delays >7 days occurred in 35.3% of patients. Two-year OS probability was 62.7% in patients who experienced treatment delays >7 days (95% CI, 58.7-66.9) compared to 69.1% in those treated to schedule (95% CI, 66.2-72.0). .9). CONCLUSIONS: Delays to chemotherapy treatment were not significantly associated with worsened survival in patients with advanced-stage ovarian cancer. These results can inform clinical decision making that prioritize toxicity management and quality of life for those treated with chemotherapy
The White Dwarf Luminosity Functions from the Pan-STARRS 1 3Ï Steradian Survey
A large sample of white dwarfs is selected by both proper motion and colours from the Pan-STARRS 1 3{\pi} Steradian Survey Processing Version 2 to construct the White Dwarf Luminosity Functions of the discs and halo in the solar neighbourhood. Four-parameter astrometric solutions were recomputed from the epoch data. The generalised maximum volume method is then used to calculate the density of the populations. After removal of crowded areas near the Galactic plane and centre, the final sky area used by this work is 7.833 sr, which is 83% of the 3{\pi} sky and 62% of the whole sky. By dividing the sky using Voronoi tessellation, photometric and astrometric uncertainties are recomputed at each step of the integration to improve the accuracy of the maximum volume. A Spatial and Temporal Risk Assessment of the Impacts of El Niño on the Tropical Forest Carbon Cycle: Theoretical Framework, Scenarios, and Implications
Strong El Niño events alter tropical climates and may lead to a negative carbon balance in tropical forests and consequently a disruption to the global carbon cycle. The complexity of tropical forests and the lack of data from these regions hamper the assessment of the spatial distribution of El Niño impacts on these ecosystems. Typically, maps of climate anomaly are used to detect areas of greater risk, ignoring baseline climate conditions and forest cover. Here, we integrated climate anomalies from the 1982â1983, 1997â1998, and 2015â2016 El Niño events with baseline climate and forest edge extent, using a risk assessment approach to hypothetically assess the spatial and temporal distributions of El Niño risk over tropical forests under several risk scenarios. The drivers of risk varied temporally and spatially. Overall, the relative risk of El Niño has been increasing driven mainly by intensified forest fragmentation that has led to a greater chance of fire ignition and increased mean annual air temperatures. We identified areas of repeated high risk, where conservation efforts and fire control measures should be focused to avoid future forest degradation and negative impacts on the carbon cycle
The impact of inter-cycle treatment delays on 5-year all-cause mortality in early-stage breast cancer: A retrospective cohort study
BACKGROUND: Inter-cycle delays to chemotherapy are often required to manage drug toxicity. The impact of delays on mortality is poorly characterised. This retrospective cohort study examined the association of treatment delay with all-cause mortality in early-stage breast cancer. METHODS: This real-world analytical study included adult women with stage 2 or 3 breast cancer receiving first-line (neo-)adjuvant chemotherapy between 01/01/2014 and 31/12/2015 in England. Inter-cycle delays > 7 days during the treatment period were calculated, and the association of treatment delay with 5-year all-cause mortality was investigated. Survival was compared between patients experiencing treatment delay and those completing treatment to schedule using landmark methodology and Kaplan-Meier (KM) estimator. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to investigate the impact of delay on survival, using inverse probability of treatment weighting to adjust for confounding variables. RESULTS: 8567 patients were included. 17 % (1448) experienced inter-cycle delay > 7 days during the treatment period. 1120 (13 %) women had died at the end of the 5-year follow up period. Median follow-up time was 5.5 years. Survival probability was significantly lower in patients experiencing treatment delay by KM estimator analysis (p < 0.0001). Cox proportional hazards regression demonstrated a significant positive association between delay and 5-year all-cause mortality (HR 1.33 95 % CI 1.12â1.61, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This is the largest study of its kind demonstrating an association between treatment delay and all-cause mortality. These findings support interventions to improve toxicity management allowing completion of chemotherapy to schedule where patients experience treatment delay due to treatment-related toxicity or hospital capacity pressures

Regression is the study of the conditional distribution of the response y given the predictors x. In a 1D regression, y is independent of x given a single linear combination ÎČTx of the predictors. Special cases of 1D regression include multiple linear regression, binary regression and generalized linear models. If a good estimate Ëb of some non-zero multiple cÎČ of ÎČ can be constructed, then the 1D regression can be visualized with a scatterplot of ËbTx versus y. A resistant method for estimating cÎČ is presented along with applications
Ferromagnetic Semiconductors: Moving Beyond (Ga,Mn)As
The recent development of MBE techniques for growth of III-V ferromagnetic
semiconductors has created materials with exceptional promise in spintronics,
i.e. electronics that exploit carrier spin polarization. Among the most
carefully studied of these materials is (Ga,Mn)As, in which meticulous
optimization of growth techniques has led to reproducible materials properties
and ferromagnetic transition temperatures well above 150 K. We review progress
in the understanding of this particular material and efforts to address
ferromagnetic semiconductors as a class. We then discuss proposals for how
these materials might find applications in spintronics. Finally, we propose
criteria that can be used to judge the potential utility of newly discovered
ferromagnetic semiconductors, and we suggest guidelines that may be helpful in
