Search for grain growth towards the center of L1544
In dense and cold molecular clouds dust grains are surrounded by thick icy
mantles. It is however not clear if dust growth and coagulation take place
before the switch-on of a protostar. This is an important issue, as the
presence of large grains may affect the chemical structure of dense cloud
cores, including the dynamically important ionization fraction, and the future
evolution of solids in protoplanetary disks. To study this further, we focus on
L1544, one of the most centrally concentrated pre-stellar cores on the verge of
star formation, and with a well-known physical structure. We observed L1544 at
1.2 and 2 mm using NIKA, a new receiver at the IRAM 30 m telescope, and we used
data from the Herschel Space Observatory archive. We find no evidence of grain
growth towards the center of L1544 at the available angular resolution.
Therefore, we conclude that single dish observations do not allow us to
investigate grain growth toward the pre-stellar core L1544 and high sensitivity
interferometer observations are needed. We predict that dust grains can grow to
200 m in size toward the central ~300 au of L1544. This will imply a dust
opacity change by a factor of ~2.5 at 1.2 mm, which can be detected using the
Atacama Large Millimeter and submillimeter Array (ALMA) at different
wavelengths and with an angular resolution of 2".Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in A&
Pair distribution function in a two-dimensional electron gas
We calculate the pair distribution function, , in a two-dimensional
electron gas and derive a simple analytical expression for its value at the
origin as a function of . Our approach is based on solving the
Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the two-electron wave function in an appropriate
effective potential, leading to results that are in good agreement with Quantum
Monte Carlo data and with the most recent numerical calculations of . [C.
Bulutay and B. Tanatar, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 65}, 195116 (2002)] We also show that
the spin-up spin-down correlation function at the origin, , is mainly independent of the degree of spin polarization of

The structure of the light-induced metastable state SII of
Na2[Fe(CN)5NO]2H2O 14 was investigated by transmission M\"ossbauer
spectroscopy (TMS) in the temperature range 15 between 85 and 135 K, nuclear
inelastic scattering (NIS) at 98 K using synchrotron 16 radiation and density
functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT and TMS results 17 strongly
support the view that the NO group in SII takes a side-on molecular orientation
18 and, further, is dynamically displaced from one eclipsed, via a staggered,
to a second 19 eclipsed orientation. The population conditions for generating
SII are optimal for 20 measurements by TMS, yet they are modest for
accumulating NIS spectra. Optimization 21 of population conditions for NIS
measurements is discussed and new NIS experiments on 22 SII are proposed
Density functional theories and self-energy approaches
A purpose-designed microarray platform (Stressgenes, Phase 1) was utilised to investigate the changes in gene expression within the liver of rainbow trout during exposure to a prolonged period of confinement. Tissue and blood samples were collected from trout at intervals up to 648 h after transfer to a standardised confinement stressor, together with matched samples from undisturbed control fish. Plasma ACTH, cortisol, glucose and lactate were analysed to confirm that the neuroendocrine response to confinement was consistent with previous findings and to provide a phenotypic context to assist interpretation of gene expression data. Liver samples for suppression subtractive hybridisation (SSH) library construction were selected from within the experimental groups comprising “early” stress (2–48 h) and “late” stress (96–504 h). In order to reduce redundancy within the four SSH libraries and yield a higher number of unique clones an additional subtraction was carried out. After printing of the arrays a series of 55 hybridisations were executed to cover 6 time points. At 2 h, 6 h, 24 h, 168 h and 504 h 5 individual confined fish and 5 individual control fish were used with control fish only at 0 h. A preliminary list of 314 clones considered differentially regulated over the complete time course was generated by a combination of data analysis approaches and the most significant gene expression changes were found to occur during the 24 h to 168 h time period with a general approach to control levels by 504 h. Few changes in expression were apparent over the first 6 h. The list of genes whose expression was significantly altered comprised predominantly genes belonging to the biological process category (response to stimulus) and one cellular component category (extracellular region) and were dominated by so-called acute phase proteins. Analysis of the gene expression profile in liver tissue during confinement revealed a number of significant clusters. The major patterns comprised genes that were up-regulated at 24 h and beyond, the primary examples being haptoglobin, β-fibrinogen and EST10729. Two representative genes from each of the six k-means clusters were validated by qPCR. Correlations between microarray and qPCR expression patterns were significant for most of the genes tested. qPCR analysis revealed that haptoglobin expression was up-regulated approximately 8-fold at 24 h and over 13-fold by 168 h.This project was part funded by the European Commission (Q5RS-2001-02211), Enterprise Ireland and the Natural Environment Research Council of the United Kingdom
Quantum Fluctuations Driven Orientational Disordering: A Finite-Size Scaling Study
The orientational ordering transition is investigated in the quantum
generalization of the anisotropic-planar-rotor model in the low temperature
regime. The phase diagram of the model is first analyzed within the mean-field
approximation. This predicts at a phase transition from the ordered to
the disordered state when the strength of quantum fluctuations, characterized
by the rotational constant , exceeds a critical value . As a function of temperature, mean-field theory predicts a range of
values of where the system develops long-range order upon cooling, but
enters again into a disordered state at sufficiently low temperatures
(reentrance). The model is further studied by means of path integral Monte
Carlo simulations in combination with finite-size scaling techniques,
concentrating on the region of parameter space where reentrance is predicted to
occur. The phase diagram determined from the simulations does not seem to
exhibit reentrant behavior; at intermediate temperatures a pronounced increase

BOMET-QoL-10 questionnaire for breast cancer patients with bone metastasis: the prospective MABOMET GEICAM study
Bone metastasis (BM) is the most common site of disease in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) patients. BM impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We tested prospectively the psychometric properties of the Bone Metastasis Quality of Life (BOMET-QoL-10) measure on MBC patients with BM.
Patients completed the BOMET-QoL-10 questionnaire, the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain, and a self-perceived health status item at baseline and at follow-up visits. We performed psychometric tests and calculated the effect size of specific BM treatment on patients´ HRQoL.
Almost 70% of the 172 patients reported symptoms, 23.3% experienced irruptive pain, and over half were receiving chemotherapy. BOMET-QoL-10 proved to be a quick assessment tool performing well in readability and completion time (about 10 min) with 0–1.2% of missing/invalid data. Although BOMET-QoL-10 scores remained fairly stable during study visits, differences were observed for patient subgroups (e.g., with or without skeletal-related events or adverse effects). Scores were significantly correlated with physician-reported patient status, patient-reported pain, symptoms, and perceived health status. BOMET-QoL-10 scores also varied prospectively according to changes in pain intensity.

Aeromonas spp.-mediated cell-contact cytotoxicity is associated with the presence of type III secretion system
In the study we examined the production of cytotonic and cytotoxic toxins and the presence of a type III secretion system (TTSS) in 64 Aeromonas spp. strains isolated from fecal specimens of patients with gastroenteritis. We observed that contact of the bacteria with host epithelial cells is a prerequisite for their cytotoxicity at 3 h incubation. Cell-contact cytotoxic activity of the strains was strongly associated with the presence of the TTSS. Culture supernatants of the strains induced low cytotoxicity effects at the same time of incubation. Cell-free supernatants of 61 (95%) isolates expressed cytotoxic activity which caused the destruction of HEp-2 cells at 24 h. Moreover, 44% strains were cytotonic towards CHO cells and 46% of strains invaded epithelial cells
Genetic diversity analysis of common beans based on molecular markers
A core collection of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), representing genetic diversity in the entire Mexican holding, is kept at the INIFAP (Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agricolas y Pecuarias, Mexico) Germplasm Bank. After evaluation, the genetic structure of this collection (200 accessions) was compared with that of landraces from the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas and Veracruz (10 genotypes from each), as well as a further 10 cultivars, by means of four amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) +3/+3 primer combinations and seven simple sequence repeats (SSR) loci, in order to define genetic diversity, variability and mutual relationships. Data underwent cluster (UPGMA) and molecular variance (AMOVA) analyses. AFLP analysis produced 530 bands (88.5% polymorphic) while SSR primers amplified 174 alleles, all polymorphic (8.2 alleles per locus). AFLP indicated that the highest genetic diversity was to be found in ten commercial-seed classes from two major groups of accessions from Central Mexico and Chiapas, which seems to be an important center of diversity in the south. A third group included genotypes from Nueva Granada, Mesoamerica, Jalisco and Durango races. Here, SSR analysis indicated a reduced number of shared haplotypes among accessions, whereas the highest genetic components of AMOVA variation were found within accessions. Genetic diversity observed in the common-bean core collection represents an important sample of the total Phaseolus genetic variability at the main Germplasm Bank of INIFAP. Molecular marker strategies could contribute to a better understanding of the genetic structure of the core collection as well as to its improvement and validation
