    Magnetocaloric Effect Caused by Paramagnetic Austenite–Ferromagnetic Martensite Phase Transformation

    In the present work, the magnetization of Ni50Mn17.5Ga25Cu7.5 alloy undergoing the first-order phase transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite was measured to evaluate the magnetic-field-induced entropy change (MFIEC) and refrigerant capacity (RC) of the alloy. A standard method (SM) of evaluation of MFIEC is based on thermodynamic Maxwell relation. In view of the criticism of SM expressed by some scientists, the alternative method (AM), which is based on thermodynamic relationships for free energy, was proposed recently for the determination of MFIEC. We developed this method and computed MFIEC in two ways—by AM and SM. The values of MFIEC obtained for Ni50Mn17.5Ga25Cu7.5 alloy by these methods appeared to be large but very different from each other. Moreover, AM reveals the possibility of both normal and inverse magnetocaloric effects in the adjoining temperature ranges, while SM results only in the normal magnetocaloric effect.This research was funded by AEI/FEDER, UE (projects MAT2014-56116-C04-01-R and MAT2012- 37923-C02-01), NASU (project 0117U000433), MESU (project 0117U004340) and SFFR (President’s of Ukraine grant F75/156-2018)

    Like grandparents, like parents: Empirical evidence and psychoanalytic thinking on the transmission of parenting styles

    The authors discuss the issue of intergenerational transmission of parenting from an empirical and psychoanalytic perspective. After presenting a framework to explain their conception of parenting, they describe intergenerational transmission of parenting as a key to interpreting and eventually changing parenting behaviors. Then they present (1) the empirical approach aimed at determining if there is actually a stability across generations that contributes to harsh parenting and eventually maltreatment and (2) the psyphoanalytic thinking that seeks to explain the continuity in terms of representations and clinical phenomena. The authors also discuss the relationship between the attachment and the caregiving systems and hypothesize a common base for the two systems in childhood experience. Finally, they propose the psychoanalytic perspective as a fruitful theoretical framework to integrate the evidence for the neurophysiological mediators and moderators of intergenerational transmission. Psychoanalytically informed research can provide clinically relevant insights and hypotheses to be tested

    Spin-dependent direct gap emission in tensile-strained Ge films on Si substrates

    The circular polarization of direct gap emission of Ge is studied in optically-excited tensile-strained Ge-on-Si heterostructures as a function of doping and temperature. Owing to the spin-dependent optical selection rules, the radiative recombinations involving strain-split light (cG-LH) and heavy hole (cG-HH) bands are unambiguously resolved. The fundamental cG-LH transition is found to have a low temperature circular polarization degree of about 85% despite an off-resonance excitation of more than 300 meV. By photoluminescence (PL) measurements and tight binding calculations we show that this exceptionally high value is due to the peculiar energy dependence of the optically-induced electron spin population. Finally, our observation of the direct gap doublet clarifies that the light hole contribution, previously considered to be negligible, can dominate the room temperature PL even at low tensile strain values of about 0.2%

    Low-frequency Elastic and Thermomechanical Analysis of Ni-Mn-In(Co) Single Crystals☆

    Martensitic transformation (MT) in Ni 45.0 Mn 36.7 In 13.3 Co 5.0 single crystals (SC) has been characterized by DSC and X-ray diffraction. Their elastic and thermomechanical properties have been investigated by a low-frequency dynamic-mechanical analysis in a tensile mode and by static mechanical compression made at different temperatures. The Young's modulus of the order of 10 GPa was measured in tensile tests along crystallographic axis of austenite showing soft behavior in a broad temperature range whereby revealing a lattice instability similar to the classical Ni-Mn-Ga alloys. The compression tests along , and directions have shown that despite a high brittleness the samples exhibit large martensitic plasticity, rubber-like behavior and superelasticity

    2-Methyl-β-cyclodextrin grafted ammonium chitosan: synergistic effects of cyclodextrin host and polymer backbone in the interaction with amphiphilic prednisolone phosphate salt as revealed by NMR spectroscopy

    Reduced molecular weight chitosan was quaternized with 2-chloro-N,N-diethylethylamine to obtain a water soluble derivative (N+-rCh). Methylated-β-cyclodextrin (MCD), with 0.5 molar substitution, was covalently linked to N+-rCh through 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate spacer to give the derivatized ammonium chitosan N+-rCh-MCD. To shed light on the role of the cyclodextrin pendant in guiding binding interactions with amphiphilic active ingredients, corticosteroid prednisolone phosphate salt (PN) was considered. The deep inclusion of PN into cyclodextrin in PN/MCD model system was pointed out by analysis of 1H NMR complexation shifts, 1D ROESY spectra, and diffusion measurements (DOSY). By using proton selective relaxation rates measurements as investigation tool, the superior affinity of N+-rCh-MCD towards PN was demonstrated in comparison with parent ammonium chitosan N+-rCh

    Mean first passage time analysis reveals rate-limiting steps, parallel pathways and dead ends in a simple model of protein folding

    We have analyzed dynamics on the complex free energy landscape of protein folding in the FOLD-X model, by calculating for each state of the system the mean first passage time to the folded state. The resulting kinetic map of the folding process shows that it proceeds in jumps between well-defined, local free energy minima. Closer analysis of the different local minima allows us to reveal secondary, parallel pathways as well as dead ends.Comment: 7 page
