Artykuł poddaje analizie rolę historii w kulturze zachodniej oraz omawia warunki jej dyskursywnego oddziaływania. De Certeau postrzega historię jako dyskurs mogący zaistnieć jedynie w rezultacie gestu radykalnego oddzielenia przeszłości od teraźniejszości, w rezultacie odgrodzenia się od Innego, który staje się przedmiotem historii, ale też od Innego, który pozostaje dla niej niewidoczny, o którym milczy i z którym w relacje nie wchodzi. Taki konstytuujący historię ruch odbywa się w oparciu o zastałą władzę polityczną, która uprawomocniając dyskurs historyczny, wytwarza dla niego miejsce w społeczeństwie, równocześnie stając się zarówno beneficjentem historiograficznego opisu oraz jego niedoścignionym przedmiotem. Owa relacja z podmiotem władzy determinuje procesy wytwarzania historii, które de Certeau postrzega w kategoriach pracy i produkcji. W tym sensie historiografia odkrywa dwa konieczne i współistniejące sensy rzeczywistości generowane przez metodologię naukową: z jednej strony rzeczywistość stanowi rezultat analizy, z drugiej jest jej postulatem. The Metropolis and Evangelical Life: Coherence and Fragmentation in the ‘Lost City of London’

This article examines the interplay of different processes of cultural and subjective fragmentation experienced by conservative evangelical Anglicans, based on an ethnographic study of a congregation in central London. The author focuses on the evangelistic speaking practices of members of this church to explore how individuals negotiate contradictory norms of interaction as they move through different city spaces, and considers their response to tensions created by the demands of their workplace and their religious lives. Drawing on Georg Simmel’s ‘The Metropolis and Mental Life’, the author argues that their faith provides a sense of coherence and unity that responds to experiences of cultural fragmentation characteristic of everyday life in the city, while simultaneously leading to a specific consciousness of moral fragmentation that is inherent to conservative evangelicalism

Festival and the City: Performativity of Sexual acts in public spheres

In this paper, we address the perception of sexual activities in public spaces and how they become aesthetic, social and cultural intervention once expressed through and embodied within performative events (theatre, street performance, carnival, festival, rave etc). A substantial amount of research has been done on the relation between sexuality and gender about public spaces, and influence of civic and urban identity on public expression of sexuality and gender. We will look at the invented rituals establishing sexuality within a context of performativity through relationships with public spaces. As the case studies, we will use the works of theatre companies La Fura dels Baus and Teatro Oficina. To set up the set of relationships between inside and outside, we will borrow a useful concept on ‘spheres' from the German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk to look at the public space as a system of spheres where a different set of rules apply enabling actions to take place. These performances in urban contexts, as well as some festivals and particularly carnivals, become a way of the staging of sexual acts in public space, in opposition to the dominant narrative of private – domestic space. We will look at how collectiveness and civic spaces become essential elements of this phenomenon and its relevance in our contemporary reality as an element of subversion of social structures.
