Magnetic polarons in Ca_(1-x)Y_xMnO_3
Experimental evidence show that in the magnetoresistive manganite Ca_(1-x)
Y_xMnO_3, ferromagnetic (FM) polarons arises in an antiferromagnetic (AF)
background, as a result of the doping with Yttrium. This hypothesis is
supported in this work by classical Monte Carlo (MC) calculations performed on
a model where FM Double Exchange (DE) and AF Superexhange (SE) compite.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figs, submitted to LAW3M conferenc
Evidence of strong antiferromagnetic coupling between localized and itinerant electrons in ferromagnetic Sr2FeMoO6
Magnetic dc susceptibility () and electron spin resonance (ESR)
measurements in the paramagnetic regime, are presented. We found a Curie-Weiss
(CW) behavior for (T) with a ferromagnetic K and
, this being lower than that expected for
either or ions. The ESR g-factor , is associated with . We obtained an excellent description
of the experiments in terms of two interacting sublattices: the localized
() cores and the delocalized electrons. The coupled equations
were solved in a mean-field approximation, assuming for the itinerant electrons
a bare susceptibility independent on . We obtained
emu/mol. We show that the reduction of for
arises from the strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interaction between the two
sublattices. At variance with classical ferrimagnets, we found that is
ferromagnetic. Within the same model, we show that the ESR spectrum can be
described by Bloch-Hasegawa type equations. Bottleneck is evidenced by the
absence of a -shift. Surprisingly, as observed in CMR manganites, no
narrowing effects of the ESR linewidth is detected in spite of the presence of
the strong magnetic coupling. These results provide evidence that the magnetic
order in does not originates in superexchange interactions,
but from a novel mechanism recently proposed for double perovskites
Cohesive energies of cubic III-V semiconductors
Cohesive energies for twelve cubic III-V semiconductors with zincblende
structure have been determined using an ab-initio scheme. Correlation
contributions, in particular, have been evaluated using the coupled-cluster
approach with single and double excitations (CCSD). This was done by means of
increments obtained for localized bond orbitals and for pairs and triples of
such bonds. Combining these results with corresponding Hartree-Fock data, we
recover about 92 \% of the experimental cohesive energies.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure, late
Study of Magnetic Properties of A_2B^'NbO_6 (A=Ba,Sr, (BaSr): and B^'=Fe and Mn) double perovskites
We have studied the magnetic properties of Ba_2FeNbO_6 and Ba_2MnNbO_6. it is
seen that Ba_2FeNbO_6 is an antiferromagnet with a weak ferromagnetic behaviour
at 5K while Ba_2MnNbO_6 shows two magnetic transitions one at 45 K and the
other at 12K. Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements at room temperature
show that the Mn compound does not show any Jahn-Teller distortion. It is also
seen that the Neel temperature of the A_2FeNbO_6 (A=Ba,Sr, BaSr) compounds do
not vary significantly. However variations in the average A-site ionic radius
influence the formation of short range correlations that persist above T_N.Comment: 10 oages, 5 figures, MMM, to appear in J.Appl.Phy
Supramolecular spectrally encoded microgels with double strand probes for absolute and direct miRNA fluorescence detection at high sensitivity
We present novel microgels as a particle-based suspension array for direct and absolute microRNA (miRNA) detection. The microgels feature a flexible molecular architecture, antifouling properties, and enhanced sensitivity with a large dynamic range of detection. Specifically, they possess a core-shell molecular architecture with two different fluorescent dyes for multiplex spectral analyses and are endowed with a fluorescent probe for miRNA detection. Encoding and detection fluorescence signals are distinguishable by nonoverlapping emission spectra. Tunable fluorescence probe conjugation and emission confinement on single microgels allow for ultrasensitive miRNA detection. Indeed, the suspension array has high selectivity and sensitivity with absolute quantification, a detection limit of 10(-15) M, a dynamic range from 10(-9) to 10(-15) M, and higher accuracy than qRT-PCR. The antifouling properties of the microgels also permit the direct measurement of miRNAs in serum, without sample pretreatment or target amplification. A multiplexed assay has been tested for a set of miRNAs chosen as cancer biomarkers
Sleep Spindle Detection by Using Merge Neural Gas
In this paper the Merge Neural Gas (MNG) model is applied to detect sleep spindles in EEG. Features are extracted from windows of the EEG by using short time Fourier transform. The total power spectrum is computed in six frequency bands and used as input to the MNG network. The results show that MNG outperforms simple neural gas in correctly detecting sleep spindles. In addition the temporal quantization results as well as sleep trajectories are visualized on two-dimensional maps by using the OVING projection method
Influence of Nd on the magnetic properties of Nd1-xCaxMnO3
The role played by the Nd ions in the magnetic properties of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3
and Nd0.7Ca0.3MnO3 is studied using static magnetization, neutron diffraction
and high frequency (9.4-475GHz) Electron Spin Resonance. We show that the Nd
ions are weakly coupled to the Mn ions via ferromagnetic exchange and are
responsible for the peculiar ferromagnetic resonance observed in the FM phase
of both compounds (ground state below 120K for x=0.3, high field state for
x=0.5). We then use ESR to look for magnetic phase separation in the low field,
CO phase of Nd0.5Ca0.5MnO3. We show that there is no trace of the FM phase
imbedded in the CO phase, contrary to what is observed in La0.5Ca0.5MnO3 or
Pr0.5Sr0.5MnO3.Comment: to be published in phys.Rev.B as a Rapid Com
Perylene diimides functionalized with N-thiadiazole substituents: Synthesis and electronic properties in OFET devices
Two new perylene diimide derivatives N,N′-bis(5-tridecyl-1,3,4- thiadiazol-2-yl)perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic 3,4:9,10-diimide (PDI-T1) and N,N′-bis[5-(1-hexyl)nonyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]perylene-3,4,9, 10-tetracarboxylic 3,4:9,10-diimide (PDI-T2), achieved by functionalizing the basic perylene molecular core at imide nitrogen with 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings, have been synthesized. Both these compounds make possible the fabrication of n-type organic thin-film transistors able to work in air, even when bare SiO2 surfaces are utilized as gate dielectric. As active channels of transistors in the bottom-contact bottom-gate configuration, PDI-T1 evaporated films exhibited a maximum mobility of 0.016 cm2/V s in vacuum. For evaporated PDI-T2 films, instead, mobility values were found to be more than one order of magnitude lower, because of their reduced degree of crystalline order. However, PDI-T2 films can be also deposited by solution techniques and field-effect transistors were fabricated by spin-coating, displaying mobility values ranging between 10-6 and 10-5 cm2/V s. Similar to what previously found for other perylene diimide derivatives, our experimental work also demonstrates that the electrical response of both PDI-T1 and PDI-T2 transistors under ambient conditions can be improved by increasing the level of hydrophobicity of the dielectric surface. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
