Niobium Silicon alloys for Kinetic Inductance Detectors

We are studying the properties of Niobium Silicon amorphous alloys as a candidate material for the fabrication of highly sensitive Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KID), optimized for very low optical loads. As in the case of other composite materials, the NbSi properties can be changed by varying the relative amounts of its components. Using a NbSi film with T_c around 1 K we have been able to obtain the first NbSi resonators, observe an optical response and acquire a spectrum in the band 50 to 300 GHz. The data taken show that this material has very high kinetic inductance and normal state surface resistivity. These properties are ideal for the development of KID. More measurements are planned to further characterize the NbSi alloy and fully investigate its potential.Comment: Accepted for publication on Journal of Low Temperature Physics. Impressions of an Urban Vision: Art Across the Park (1980 and 1982)

This thesis examines Art Across the Park (1980 and 1982), a program of sculpture and performance conceived of by artist David Hammons sited throughout overlooked regions of New York City’s public parks. Amidst debates about the proper use of public space and the role of public art in the early 1980s, Art Across the Park asserted a more culturally expansive model of being in social space, one rooted in strategies of performance as an antidote to lasting effects of social control

On the dynamical conditions concomitant with the bottom anoxia in the Northern Adriatic Sea: A numerical case study for the 1977 event

    Get PDF
The aim of the present investigation is to explain the dramatic phenomenon of anoxia/hypoxia waters observed in the Northern Adriatic Sea during August 1977 by using the data collected in the DINAS 2 oceanographic campaign and modelling them by means of a three-dimensional numerical model for the Whole basin. The model has been forced with ECMWF surface reanalysis data—wind stress, heat fluxes and river discharges. The main result lies in the high temporal and spatial correlation between the observed anoxia areas and the centres of anticyclonic circulation produced by the model. Further investigations seem to be necessary for a better matching between observed and simulated thermohaline fields

Local and nonlocal solvable structures in ODEs reduction

Solvable structures, likewise solvable algebras of local symmetries, can be used to integrate scalar ODEs by quadratures. Solvable structures, however, are particularly suitable for the integration of ODEs with a lack of local symmetries. In fact, under regularity assumptions, any given ODE always admits solvable structures even though finding them in general could be a very difficult task. In practice a noteworthy simplification may come by computing solvable structures which are adapted to some admitted symmetry algebra. In this paper we consider solvable structures adapted to local and nonlocal symmetry algebras of any order (i.e., classical and higher). In particular we introduce the notion of nonlocal solvable structure

Surgical treatment of acute fingernail injuries

The fingernail has an important role in hand function, facilitating the pinch and increasing the sensitivity of the fingertip. Therefore, immediate and proper strategy in treating fingernail injuries is essential to avoid aesthetic and functional impairment. Nail-bed and fingertip injuries are considered in this review, including subungual hematoma, wounds, simple lacerations of the nail bed and/or matrix, stellate lacerations, avulsion of the nail bed, ungual matrix defect, nail-bed injuries associated with fractures of the distal phalanx, and associated fingertip injuries. All these injuries require careful initial evaluation and adequate treatment, which is often performed under magnification. Delayed and secondary procedures of fingernail sequelae are possible, but final results are often unpredictable

GDS score as screening tool to assess the risk of impact of chronic conditions and depression on quality of life in hospitalized elderly patients in internal medicine wards

ABSTRACT: Aging of population is characterized by multiple chronic conditions in the same individual. Health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) reflects the multidimensional impact of chronic disease on population and it is increasingly analysed as outcomes. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the predictors of quality of life among elderly patients hospitalized in internal medicine ward, investigating the effect of comorbidities on health-related quality of life.Data collected in this cross-sectional study were analysed. Socio-demographic, clinical characteristics, disease distribution and quality of life by the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) were evaluated.Of 240 inpatients, subjects with Barthel Index (BI)≤40 were 23.7%, 55% had a Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS)≥2. After categorizing mental component score (MCS) and physical component score (PCS) in five classes, we found that diabetics and patients with cancer were more frequent in the first class of MCS while patients with NYHA III-IV are significantly more frequent in the first class of PCS. When we classified patients according to GDS≥2 or < 2, subjects with GDS≥2 had BI and MCS significantly lower. In the multivariate analysis GDS score ≥2 was independently associated with first MCS class [16.32 (3.77-70.68)] while NYHA III-IV class and claudicatio intermittents were strong predictors of the worst PCS class [9.54 (1.97-47.40), 2.53 (1.16-5.49), respectively]. Liver disease was independently associated with GDS≥2 [5.26 (1.13-24.39)].Our study highlighted the impact of chronic diseases on health-related quality of life in elderly subjects hospitalized in an internal medicine ward pointing out the importance of taking into account patient's needs and perception and the setting up of a personalised health-care. Patients with diabetes and liver disease along with persons affected by cancer need psychological support to improve their quality of life. A GDS score ≥ 2 is a strong predictor of poor quality of life and should trigger an in-depth assessment of mental health in this kind of patients
