    On Chinese and Western Family Trees: Mechanism and Performance

    Family tree is an efficient data structure to store the kinship information in a family. There are basically two kinds of trees: Western Family Tree (WFT) and Oriental Family Tree such as Chinese Family Tree (CFT). To get an insight of their efficiency in the context of family kinship presentation and information extraction, in this paper we develop WFT and CFT presentation models and search algorithms, comparing their search performance and inherent mechanism. The study reveals that the computational cost is higher in CFT model, but it provides a greater gain in information retrieval and produces more details of the kinship between individuals in the family

    uOS : A resource rerouting middleware for ubiquitous games

    Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp) relies on the computation distributed over the environment to simplify the tasks performed by its users. A smart space is an instance of a ubiquitous environment, composed of a dynamic and heterogeneous set of devices that interact to support the execution of distributed smart applications. In this context, mobile devices provide new resources when they join the environment, which disappear when they leave it. This introduces the challenge of self-adaptation, in which smart applications may either include new resources as they become available or replace them when they become unavailable. Ubiquitous games combine ubicomp and computer game technologies to enrich user’s experience and fun. Such games may benefit from different input and output resources offered by mobile devices. To support the development and deployment of ubiquitous games, this work presents the uOS middleware. Using a DSOA (Device Service Oriented Architecture) based architecture and lightweight service discovery protocols, uOS ensures compatibility among resources, providing resource rerouting between heterogeneous and limited software and hardware platforms.     Meninas.comp: computación para niñas en escuelas primarias de Brasil

    The Computing field has a gender diversity gap, with female participation much lower when compared to men. In this context, several activities have been developed to include more women in the field of Computing, and the Meninas.comp project has been working to introduce Computing to girls in elementary schools in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. This article has two objectives: i) to present the activities of the Meninas.comp project for girls in elementary schools; ii) to present a mapping of the literature on computational activities with a focus on girls in elementary schools in Brazil. The systematic literature mapping found publications reporting a large variety of activities, such as unplugged computing, game development, card games, programming classes, competitions, lectures, and workshops. From the Meninas.comp project, this article highlights a smart garden developed by female elementary school students.El campo de la informática tiene una brecha de diversidad de género, con una participación femenina mucho menor en comparación con los hombres. Al respecto, se han desarrollado varias actividades para incluir a más mujeres en el campo de la Computación. El proyecto Meninas.comp ha trabajado en Informática para niñas de escuelas primarias en Brasilia, capital de Brasil. En este contexto, este artículo tiene dos objetivos: i) presentar las actividades del proyecto Meninas.comp en escuelas primarias de niñas; ii) presentar un mapeo de la literatura sobre actividades computacionales con enfoque en niñas de escuelas primarias en Brasil. El mapeo sistemático de literatura encontró publicaciones que informan una gran variedad de actividades, como computación desconectada, desarrollo de juegos, juegos de cartas, clases de programación, concursos, conferencias y talleres.     Anti-HIV-1 activity of pepRF1, a proteolysis-resistant CXCR4 antagonist derived from Dengue virus capsid protein

Here, we report the anti-HIV-1 peptide pepRF1, a human serum-resistant peptide derived from the Dengue virus capsid protein. In vitro, pepRF1 shows a 50% inhibitory concentration of 1.5 nM with a potential therapeutic window higher than 53 000. This peptide is specific for CXCR4-tropic strains, preventing viral entry into target cells by binding to the viral coreceptor CXCR4, acting as an antagonist of this receptor. pepRF1 is more effective than T20, the only peptide-based HIV-1 entry inhibitor approved, and excels in inhibiting a HIV-1 strain resistant to T20. Potentially, pepRF1 can be used alone or in combination with other anti-HIV drugs.
