Extending Finite-state Models of Reduplication to Tone in Thai
Languages exhibiting both tonal and reduplication processes pose a challenge for finite-state technologies. In this sense, Markowska et al. (2021) propose a combination of 2-way FSTs and multi-tape FSTs in order to simultaneously deal with total reduplication on the segmental level and independent tonal processes on the autosegmental level. Here, we evaluate this model for reduplication processes in Thai, which shows total reduplication both for tones and segments, and we suggest that the expressivity of 2-way FSTs is needed at both levels

The Internal Ultraviolet-to-Optical Color Dispersion: Quantifying the Morphological K-Correction
We present a quantitative measure of the internal color dispersion within
galaxies, which quantifies differences in morphology as a function of
wavelength. We apply this statistic to a local galaxy sample with archival
images at 1500 and 2500 Angstroms from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, and
ground-based B-band observations to investigate how the color dispersion
relates to global galaxy properties. The intenal color dispersion generally
correlates with transformations in galaxy morphology as a function of
wavelength, i.e., it quantifies the morphological K-correction. Mid-type spiral
galaxies exhibit the highest dispersion in their internal colors, which stems
from differences in the bulge, disk, and spiral-arm components. Irregulars and
late-type spirals show moderate internal color dispersion, which implies that
young stars generally dominate the colors. Ellipticals, lenticulars, and
early-type spirals generally have low or negligible internal color dispersion,
which indicates that the stars contributing to the UV-to-optical emission have
a very homogeneous distribution. We discuss the application of the internal
color dispersion to high-redshift galaxies in deep, Hubble Space Telescope
images. By simulating local galaxies at cosmological distances, many of the
galaxies have luminosities that are sufficiently bright at rest--frame optical
wavelengths to be detected within the limits of the currently deepest
near-infrared surveys even with no evolution. Under assumptions that the
luminosity and color evolution of the local galaxies conform with the measured
values of high-redshift objects, we show that galaxies' intrinsic internal

High level of treatment failure with commonly used anthelmintics on Irish sheep farms
peer-reviewedBackground: In 2013 a Technology Adoption Program for sheep farmers was established to encourage the implementation of best management practices on sheep farms in Ireland. There were 4,500 participants in this programme in 2013. As part of this programme, farmers had the option to carry out a drench test to establish the efficacy of their anthelmintic treatment.
Results: Flock faecal samples were collected before and after treatment administration and gastrointestinal nematode eggs enumerated. In total there were 1,893 participants in the task, however only 1,585 included both a pre- and post-treatment faecal sample. Of those, 1,308 provided information on the anthelmintic product that they used with 46%, 23% and 28% using a benzimidazole (BZ), levamisole (LEV) and macrocyclic lactone (ML) product respectively. The remaining farmers used a product inapplicable for inclusion in the task such as a flukicide or BZ/LEV combination product. Samples were included for analysis of drench efficacy if the pre-treatment flock egg count was ≥200 eggs per gram and the interval post-sampling was 10–14 days for BZ products, 4–7 days for LEV products and 14–18 days for ML products. These criteria reduced the number of valid tests to 369, 19.5% of all tests conducted. If the reduction post-treatment was ≥95% the treatment was considered effective. Only 51% of treatments were considered effective using this criterion. There was a significant difference in efficacy between the anthelmintic drug classes with BZ effective in only 30% of treatments, LEV effective in 52% of cases and ML effective in 76% of cases.
Conclusions: Gastrointestinal nematode anthelmintic treatments, as practiced on Irish farms, have a high failure rate. There was a significant difference between the efficacies of the anthelmintic classes with BZ the least effective and ML the most effective
Piecewise-linear Models of Genetic Regulatory Networks: Equilibria and their Stability
A formalism based on piecewise-linear (PL) differential equations, originally due to Glass and Kauffman, has been shown to be well-suited to modelling genetic regulatory networks. However, the discontinuous vector field inherent in the PL models raises some mathematical problems in defining solutions on the surfaces of discontinuity. To overcome these difficulties we use the approach of Filippov, which extends the vector field to a differential inclusion. We study the stability of equilibria (called singular equilibrium sets) that lie on the surfaces of discontinuity. We prove several theorems that characterize the stability of these singular equilibria directly from the state transition graph, which is a qualitative representation of the dynamics of the system. We also formulate a stronger conjecture on the stability of these singular equilibrium sets
Household food insecurity positively associated with increased hospital charges for infants
Objective: To test whether household food insecurity (HFI) was associated with total annual hospitalization charges, annual days hospitalized, and charges per day, among low-income infants (months) with any non-neonatal hospital stays.
Methods: Administrative inpatient hospital charge data were matched to survey data from infants\u27 caregivers interviewed 1998-2005 in emergency departments in Boston and Little Rock. All study infants had been hospitalized at least once since birth; infants whose diagnoses were not plausibly related to nutrition were excluded from both groups. Log-transformed hospitalization charges were analyzed, controlling for site fixed effects.
Results: 24% of infants from food-insecure households and 16% from food-secure households were hospitalized \u3e2 times (P=0.02). Mean annual inpatient hospital charges (5,735; P
Conclusion: HFI was positively associated with annual inpatient charges among hospitalized low income infants. Average annual inpatient charges were almost $2,000 higher (inflation adjusted) for infants living in food-insecure households. Reducing or eliminating food insecurity could reduce health services utilization and expenditures for infants in low-income families, most of whom are covered by public health insurance

Lipid-induced hepatocyte-derived extracellular vesicles regulate hepatic stellate cell via microRNAs targeting PPAR-γ.
Background&aimsHepatic stellate cells (HSCs) play a key role in liver fibrosis in various chronic liver disorders including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The development of liver fibrosis requires a phenotypic switch from quiescent to activated HSCs. The triggers for HSCs activation in NAFLD remain poorly understood. We investigated the role and molecular mechanism of extracellular vesicles (EVs) released by hepatocytes during lipotoxicity in modulation of HSC phenotype.MethodsEVs were isolated from fat-laden hepatocytes by differential centrifugation and incubated with HSCs. EV internalization and HSCs activation, migration and proliferation were assessed. Loss- and gain-of-functions studies were performed to explore the potential role of PPAR-γ-targeting miRNAs carried by EVs into HSC.ResultsHepatocyte-derived EVs released during lipotoxicity are efficiently internalized by HSCs resulting in their activation, as shown by marked up-regulation of pro-fibrogenic genes (Collagen-I, α-SMA and TIMP-2), proliferation, chemotaxis and wound healing responses. These changes were associated with miRNAs shuttled by EVs and suppression of PPAR-γ expression in HSC. Hepatocyte-derived EVs miRNA content included various miRNAs that are known inhibitors of PPAR-γ expression with miR-128-3p being the most effectively transferred. Furthermore loss- and gain-of-function studies identified miR-128-3p as a central modulator of the effects of EVs on PPAR-γ inhibition and HSC activation.ConclusionOur findings demonstrate a link between fat-laden hepatocyte-derived EVs and liver fibrosis and have potential implications for the development of novel anti-fibrotic targets for NAFLD and other fibrotic diseases
Single-cell analysis of cardiogenesis reveals basis for organ-level developmental defects.
Organogenesis involves integration of diverse cell types; dysregulation of cell-type-specific gene networks results in birth defects, which affect 5% of live births. Congenital heart defects are the most common malformations, and result from disruption of discrete subsets of cardiac progenitor cells1, but the transcriptional changes in individual progenitors that lead to organ-level defects remain unknown. Here we used single-cell RNA sequencing to interrogate early cardiac progenitor cells as they become specified during normal and abnormal cardiogenesis, revealing how dysregulation of specific cellular subpopulations has catastrophic consequences. A network-based computational method for single-cell RNA-sequencing analysis that predicts lineage-specifying transcription factors2,3 identified Hand2 as a specifier of outflow tract cells but not right ventricular cells, despite the failure of right ventricular formation in Hand2-null mice4. Temporal single-cell-transcriptome analysis of Hand2-null embryos revealed failure of outflow tract myocardium specification, whereas right ventricular myocardium was specified but failed to properly differentiate and migrate. Loss of Hand2 also led to dysregulation of retinoic acid signalling and disruption of anterior-posterior patterning of cardiac progenitors. This work reveals transcriptional determinants that specify fate and differentiation in individual cardiac progenitor cells, and exposes mechanisms of disrupted cardiac development at single-cell resolution, providing a framework for investigating congenital heart defects
On the Distance to the Ophiuchus Star-Forming Region
The Ophiuchus molecular cloud complex has produced in Lynds 1688 the richest
known embedded cluster within ~300 pc of the Sun. Unfortunately, distance
estimates to the Oph complex vary by nearly ~40% (~120-165 pc). Here I
calculate a new independent distance estimate of 135 +- 8 pc to this benchmark
star-forming region based on Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes to stars
illuminating reflection nebulosity in close proximity to Lynds 1688. Combining
this value with recent distance estimates from reddening studies suggests a
consensus distance of 139 +- 6 pc (4% error), situating it within ~11 pc of the
centroid of the ~5 Myr old Upper Sco OB subgroup of Sco OB2 (145 pc). The
velocity vectors for Oph and Upper Sco are statistically indistinguishable
within ~1 km/s in each vector component. Both Oph and Upper Sco have negligible
motion (<1 km/s) in the Galactic vertical direction with respect to the Local
Standard of Rest, which is inconsistent with the young stellar groups having
formed via the high velocity cloud impact scenario.Comment: to appear in Jan 2008 AN (5 pages), note added in proof regarding new
