    Types and Markets: Photography and Masks Among the Nuxalk in the Twentieth Century

    Nuxalk mask making styles changed throughout the twentieth century for various reasons. The ideas of transition, transformation, and the market are central to the establishment of these alterations. Mask making is one response to acculturation and one means of cultural survival; masks are an outward form of cultural pride. The nineteenth century brought increased contact and trade between Native groups and Euro-Americans. Missionaries, more settlers, and tourists came to the Northwest Coast, all of whom wanted to see and experience the authentic Natives of the region before they disappeared. These groups were quickly followed by anthropologists who wanted to study and catalogue Native people and their material culture before authenticity, in their view, disappeared under the onslaught of acculturation. Authenticity was generally viewed by anthropologists as being anything Native made or associated with Native culture that could be traced to pre-contact times and had uses within Native culture above and beyond market value. For tourists, authenticity had a slightly different association and generally meant an object which had been made by, and often sold by, a Native person, and one which appeared to be made by hand. The idea of the hand-made object also included ideas of preindustrial labor, which was valued within the Arts and Crafts movement. Settlers and missionaries held views of authenticity which coincided with the previous two, but the idea of the value changed. For settlers, an authentic Native object or person was one in which there was no evidence of acculturation, and these people and objects could be used to explain the need for Euro-American settlement of the land, as Native people were seen as primitive and in need of civilization. Missionaries added to this the need for the eradication of Native religions and saw the selling of objects associated with these religions as the first step in the conversion to Christianity. The idea of the Vanishing Race, combined with the stereotype of the \u27\u27Noble Savage, colored all interracial interactions at this time. It is arguable whether or not these stereotypes have ever completely died out among the Euro-Americans who still visit the Coast

    Residual Strength Parameters From a Slope Instability

    The study attempts to determine the in situ shear strength parameters of a stiff clay from a back analys1s of a well documented landslide. The relatively small extension of the instability, as well as the homogeneity of the clay formation and the defined slip surface, allows a consistent evaluation of shear strength parameters. The study is also supported by ring shear tests, and microscopic analysis performed on undisturbed thin sections, by means of scanning electron microscopy. The results of back analysis are in good agreement with laboratory tests and microscopy observations

    SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTION OF FENNEL AND DILL BY INTERCROPPING

    Intercropping is claimed to be one of the most significant cropping techniques in sustainable agriculture, and much research and many reviews attribute to its utilization a number of environmental benefits, from promoting land biodiversity to diversifying agricultural outcome. In this sense, intercropping is thought to be a useful means of minimizing the risks of agricultural production in many environments, including those typical of under-developed or marginal areas. In order to validate this hypothesis in a representative area of the semiarid Mediterranean environment, we evaluated the possibility of growing dill and fennel, both belonging to the family Apiaceae, in temporary intercropping. Our trial was performed in Sicily in 2000–01 and 2001–02; in the first year, fennel and dill were cultivated in a mixture using a substitution scheme, whereas in 2001–02 we evaluated the bio-agronomical and chemical features of fennel alone. The biological efficiency of the intercropping system was evaluated by using the Land Equivalent Ratio and the Competitive Ratio, and an estimate of the interaction effects of both crops was performed by analyzing the major vegetative and yield traits of plants, along with the chemical profile of volatiles of the fruits. Both in grain yield and in biomass yield, the most efficient cropping system was the intercropping ratio with a higher proportion of fennel, in which the competitive ratio values calculated for dill reached 1.90 for grain and 2.59 for biomass. Our results also indicate that the presence of dill exerted a clear stabilizing effect on fennel seed yield of the following year: whereas no difference in fennel seed yield was detected from one year to the following on the previously intercropped plots, in the repeated pure stand a 50% yield reduction was recorded. In the trial environment, the technique showed a good potential to improve the efficiency of resource utilization; further long-term experiments will be necessary in order to demonstrate the application of such a technique to other medicinal and aromatic plant mixtures

    Use of Modified 3D Scaffolds to Improve Cell Adhesion and Drive Desired Cell Responses.

    In the most common approach of tissue engineering, a polymeric scaffold with a well-defined architecture has emerged as a promising platform for cells adhesion and guide their proliferation and differentiation into the desired tissue or organ. An ideal model for the regeneration should mimic clinical conditions of tissue injury, create a permissive microenvironment for diffusion of nutrients, gases and growth factors and permit angiogenesis. In this work, we used a 3D support made of synthetic resorbable polylactic acid (PLLA), which has considerable potential because of its well-known biocompatibility and biodegradability. One of the factors that influence cell adhesion to the scaffold is its porosity degree, but surface properties represent the main driving forces that influence the composition and orientation of proteins that will be absorbed onto material surfaces. We used scaffolds in which it was possible to control pore size and that had undergone on type-I collagen treatment, to mimic the extra cellular matrix, or plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) combined with plasma treatment, in order to modify surface chemistry of the material. Our results show different cell affinity in non-treated scaffolds compared to type-I collagen or plasma modified ones.     Pro-inflammatory M1/Th1 type immune network and increased expression of TSG-6 in the eutopic endometrium from women with endometriosis

    Objective The study aimed to explore the type 1 and type 2 cytokines expression in the endometrium from women affected by endometriosis compared to controls. The expression of TSG-6, a multifunctional protein involved in several inflammatory disease, was also evaluated. Study Design Setting Experimental clinical study. Patients 10 patients affected by endometriosis and 11 controls. Interventions Patients underwent to an ultrasound transvaginal examination and a diagnostic hysteroscopy in order to exclude any uterine abnormality. All patients underwent endometrial biopsy using a Novak's curette. Main outcome measures The endometrial expression of type 1 (IL- 1 ÎČ TNF-α, IL-8) and type 2 (IL-10) cytokines, and of TSG-6 was evaluated by immunohistochemistry and by real time PCR. The expression of TSG-6 was confirmed by western blot. Results Results of PCR analysis and of immunohistochemistry revealed an increased expression of IL-1ÎČ, TNF-α, IL-8 and of TSG-6 in the endometrium of endometriosic patients. IL-10 expression did not show any difference. Conclusions An increased expression of pro-inflammatory type 1 cytokines was demonstrated in the endometrium from endometriosic patients, suggesting an endometrial environment harmful for implantation due to the prevalence of Th1 related immunity. An increased expression of TSG-6 was also demonstrated for the first time. Our findings concur to better define the inflammatory imbalance and the abnormal endometrial receptivity, reported in literature, of the eutopic endometrium of women affected by endometriosis

    Hydrogen blending effect on fiscal and metrological instrumentation: A review

    A green hydrogen (H2) economy requires a sustainable, efficient, safe, and widespread infrastructure for transporting and distributing H2 from production to consumption sites. Transporting a hydrogen/natural gas (H2NG) mixture, including pure H2, through the existing European natural gas (NG) infrastructure is considered a cost-effective solution, particularly in the transitional phase. Several reasons justify the H2NG blending option. The NG infrastructure can be efficiently repurposed to transport H2, by blending H2 with NG, to operate as H2 daily storage, matching production and demand and to enable large-scale seasonal H2 storage. Although many benefits exist, the potential of existing NG grids for transporting and distributing green H2 may face limitations due to technical, economic, or normative concerns. This paper focuses on the state of the art of the European NG transmission and distribution metrology normative framework and identifies the gaps to be filled in case of H2NG flowing into the existing grids.     Measuring and Comparing Party Ideology and Heterogeneity

    Estimates of party ideological positions in Western Democracies yield useful party-level information, but lack the ability to provide insight into intraparty politics. In this paper, we generate comparable measures of latent individual policy positions from elite survey data which enable analysis of elite-level party ideology and heterogeneity. This approach has advantages over both expert surveys and approaches based on behavioral data, such as roll call voting and is directly relevant to the study of party cohesion. We generate a measure of elite positions for several European countries using a common space scaling approach and demonstrate its validity as a measure of party ideology. We then apply these data to determine the sources of party heterogeneity, focusing on the role of intraparty competition in electoral systems, nomination rules, and party goals. We find that policy-seeking parties and centralized party nomination rules reduce party heterogeneity. While intraparty competition has no effect, the presence of these electoral rules conditions the effect of district magnitude

    Not Quite Right: Representations of Eastern Europeans in ECJ Discourse

    Although the increasing responsiveness of the Court of Justice of the European Union (the ‘ECJ’) jurisprudence to western Member States’ concerns regarding Central and Eastern European (‘CEE’) nationals’ mobility has garnered academic attention, ECJ discourse has not been scrutinised for how it approaches the CEE region or CEE movers. Applying postcolonial theory, this article seeks to fill this gap and to explore whether there are any indications that ECJ discourse is in line with the historical western-centric inferiorisation of the CEE region. A critical discourse analysis of a set of ECJ judgments and corresponding Advocate General opinions pertaining to CEE nationals illustrates not only how the ECJ adopts numerous discursive strategies to maintain its authority, but also how it tends to prioritise values of the western Member States, while overlooking interests of CEE movers. Its one-sided approach is further reinforced by referring to irrelevant facts and negative assumptions to create an image of CEE nationals as socially and economically inferior to westerners, as not belonging to the proper EU polity and as not quite deserving of EU law’s protections. By silencing CEE nationals’ voices, while disregarding the background of east/west socio-economic and political power differentials and precariousness experienced by many CEE workers in the west, such racialising discourse normalises ethnicity- and class-based stereotypes. These findings also help to contextualise both EU and western policies targeting CEE movers and evidence of their unequal outcomes in the west, and are in line with today’s nuanced expressions of racisms. By illustrating the ECJ’s role in addressing values pertinent to mobile CEE individuals, this study facilitates a fuller appreciation of the ECJ’s power in shaping and reflecting western-centric EU identity and policies. Engaging with such issues will not only allow us to better appreciate—and question—the ECJ’s legitimacy, but might also facilitate a better understanding of power dynamics within the EU. This study also makes significant theoretical and methodological contributions. It expands (and complicates) the application of postcolonial theory to contemporary intra-EU processes, while illustrating the usefulness of applying critical discourse analysis to exploring differentiation, exclusion, subordination and power within legal language
