    Destruction of chain-superconductivity in YBa_2Cu_4O_8 in a weak magnetic field

    We report measurements of the temperature dependent components of the magnetic penetration depth {\lambda}(T) in single crystal samples of YBa_2Cu_4O_8 using a radio frequency tunnel diode oscillator technique. We observe a downturn in {\lambda}(T) at low temperatures for currents flowing along the b and c axes but not along the a axis. The downturn in {\lambda}_b is suppressed by a small dc field of ~0.25 T. This and the zero field anisotropy of {\lambda}(T) likely result from proximity induced superconducting on the CuO chains, however we also discuss the possibility that a significant part of the anisotropy might originate from the CuO2 planes.Comment: 5 page

    Dimensionality-driven spin-flop transition in quasi-one-dimensional PrBa2Cu4O8

    In the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8, the Pr cations order antiferromagnetically at 17 K in zero field. Through a combination of magnetic susceptibility, torque magnetometry, specific heat and interchain transport measurements, the anisotropic temperature-magnetic field phase diagram associated with this ordering has been mapped out. A low-temperature spin-flop transition in the Pr sub-lattice is found to occur at the same magnetic field strength and orientation as a dimensional crossover in the ground state of the metallic CuO chains. This coincidence suggests that the spin reorientation is driven by a change in the anisotropic Rudermann-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction induced by a corresponding change in effective dimensionality of the conduction electrons.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    KMS conditions for 4-point Green functions at finite temperature

    We study the 4-point function in the Keldysh formalism of the closed time path formulation of real time finite temperature field theory. We derive the KMS conditions for these functions and discuss the number of 4-point functions that are independent. We define a set of `physical' functions which are linear combinations of the usual Keldysh functions. We show that these functions satisfy simple KMS conditions. In addition, we consider a set of integral equations which represent a resummation of ladder graphs. We show that these integral equations decouple when one uses the physical functions that we have defined.     Theory of the Resistive Transition in Overdoped Tl2Ba2CuO6+xTl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+x}: Implications for the angular dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate in High-TcT_c superconductors

    We show that recent measurements of the magnetic field dependence of the magnetization, specific heat and resistivity of overdoped Tc∼17KT_c \sim 17K Tl2Ba2CuO6+δTl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+\delta} in the vicinity of the superconducting Hc2H_{c2} imply that the vortex viscosity is anomalously small and that the material studied is inhomogeneous with small, a few hundred A˚\AA, regions in which the local TcT_{c} is much higher than the bulk TcT_{c}. The anomalously small vortex viscosity can be derived from a microscopic model in which the quasiparticle lifetime varies dramatically around the Fermi surface, being small everywhere except along the zone diagonal (``cold spot'').     Phase transitions in 3-dimensional Dirac semi-metals using Schwinger-Dyson equations

    We study the semi-metal/insulator quantum phase transition in three-dimensional Dirac semi-metals by solving a set of Schwinger-Dyson equations. We study the effect of an anisotropic fermion velocity on the critical coupling of the transition. We consider the influence of several different approximations that are commonly used in the literature and show that results for the critical coupling change considerably when some of these approximations are relaxed. Most importantly, the nature of the dependence of the critical coupling on the anisotropy depends strongly on the approximations that are used for the photon polarization tensor. On the one hand, this means that calculations that include full photon dynamics are necessary to answer even the basic question of whether the critical coupling increases or decreases with anisotropy. On the other hand, our results mean that it is possible that anisotropy could provide a mechanism to promote dynamical gap generation in realistic three-dimensional Dirac semi-metallic materials.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure

    Correlation between TcT_c and anisotropic scattering in Tl2_2Ba2_2CuO6+δ_{6+\delta}

    Angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements are used to determine the isotropic and anisotropic components of the transport scattering rate in overdoped Tl2_2Ba2_2CuO6+δ_{6+\delta} for a range of TcT_c values between 15K and 35K. The size of the anisotropic scattering term is found to scale linearly with TcT_c, establishing a link between the superconducting and normal state physics. Comparison with results from angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy indicates that the transport and quasiparticle lifetimes are distinct.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Fermiology and electronic homogeneity of the superconducting overdoped cuprate Tl-2201 revealed by quantum oscillations

    We report an angular quantum oscillation study of Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+delta} for two different doping levels (Tc = 10K and 26 K) and determine the Fermi surface size and topology in considerable detail. Our results show that Fermi liquid behavior is not confined to the edge of the superconducting dome and is robust up to at least T_c^{max}/3.5. Superconductivity is found to survive up to a larger doping p_c = 0.31 than in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4. Our data imply that electronic inhomogeneity does not play a significant role in the loss of superconductivity and superfluid density in overdoped cuprates, and point towards a purely magnetic or electronic pairing mechanismComment: 4 page

    Cricket, migration and diasporic communities

    Ever since different communities began processes of global migration, sport has been an integral feature in how we conceptualise and experience the notion of being part of a diaspora. Sport provides diasporic communities with a powerful means for creating transnational ties, but also shapes ideas of their ethnic and racial identities. In spite of this, theories of diaspora have been applied sparingly to sporting discourses. Due mainly to its central role in spreading dominant white racial narratives within the British Empire, and the various ways different ethnic groups have ‘played’ with the meanings and associations of the sport in the (post-)colonial period, cricket is an interesting focus for academic research. Despite W.G. Grace’s claim that cricket advances civilisation by promoting a common bond, binding together peoples of vastly different backgrounds, to this day cricket operates strict symbolic boundaries; defining those who do, and equally, do not belong. C.L.R. James’ now famous metaphor of looking ‘beyond the boundary’ captures the belief that, to fully understand the significance of cricket, and the sport’s roles in changing and shaping society, one must consider the wider social and political contexts within which the game is played.
