Assessing Inconspicuous Smartphone Authentication for Blind People

As people store more personal data in their smartphones, the consequences of having it stolen or lost become an increasing concern. A typical counter-measure to avoid this risk is to set up a secret code that has to be entered to unlock the device after a period of inactivity. However, for blind users, PINs and passwords are inadequate, since entry 1) consumes a non-trivial amount of time, e.g. using screen readers, 2) is susceptible to observation, where nearby people can see or hear the secret code, and 3) might collide with social norms, e.g. disrupting personal interactions. Tap-based authentication methods have been presented and allow unlocking to be performed in a short time and support naturally occurring inconspicuous behavior (e.g. concealing the device inside a jacket) by being usable with a single hand. This paper presents a study with blind users (N = 16) where an authentication method based on tap phrases is evaluated. Results showed the method to be usable and to support the desired inconspicuity.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Coupling interaction and physiological metrics for interaction adaptation

Abstract. We present an adaptation system whose goal is to provide users with interaction experiences tailored to their current physiological status and performance. The system captures emotion, motion and application related metrics to proactively adjust the available interaction patterns. Interacting in different environments -stationary/mobile -or under different emotional status -relaxed/stressed-can affect performance, engagement and enjoyment. This contribution describes the initial design steps in the creation of an interaction adaptation engine. Keywords: Physiological Signals, Adaptation, User Performance. Motivation Physiological user interfaces are typically employed to perceive real body signals from users, while utilizing that information during the interaction perio

Finding New Ways to Read Digital Talking Books

In this paper we present new ways to read Digital Talking Books (DTBs). DTBs aim to provide better access to literary contents for the visually impaired population. However, these books offer limited capabilities when reading the book freely. Only continuous reading or jumping through sections of the text is allowed. This lack of flexibility leaves out many of the types of reading users usually do, such as those that provide the user with an overview of the book content or readings based on a specific set of key points that have more importance to the user. The work we present here overcomes these limitations by providing the user with a whole new range of interaction possibilities with DTB

Using a quantitative approach, through survey as a research strategy, the Denisson Organizational Culture Survey was applied with the goal of characterizing the organizational culture of the Alentejo Central Primary Health Care Teams. We intend to investigate the existence of subcultures (professionals and of type of unit), as well of correlations between organizational culture and performance (measured through the Índice de Desempenho Setorial: Área do Desempenho Assistencial). Empirical evidence was found of the referred subcultures and of the existence of positive correlations between the organizational culture perceived by employees and the performance of the healthcare units. The involvement dimension was the one with the highest average compared to the other dimensions. The results point to the need to reinforce, through human resources policies, the mission dimension, to improve the performance of the healthcare teams

ABSTRACT This paper presents a reflection on the assessment of mobile Web content for people with disabilities. It proposes a rationale for an evaluation framework considering: (1) the coherent merge of state of the art guidelines on Web accessibility and mobile best practices; and (2) the usage of current and prospective practices particularly for people with visual impairments. It also presents the preliminary results of a questionnaire that validates that rationale laying the grounds for a coherent evaluation approach

Sustainability Indicators in the Southwest of Iberian Peninsula. Highlighting the Euro-region EUROACE: The OTALEX-C Project.

EUROACE is the name given to the Euro-region covering Alentejo and Centro in Portugal and Extremadura in Spain, since the biophysical perspective, it is mainly characterized by the topography and climate of the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The evolution of these two variables have allowed developing a wide variety of soils and a considerable amount of their typologies diversity, as well. The OTALEX C Project team, a cooperation formed by the direct collaboration of Portuguese and Spanish entities creating an active cross-border cooperation (CBC) strategy, belonging to the three levels of administration: national, regional and local. Sharing common problems was enable to develop common solutions for the territories as the example of the OTALEX C Spatial Data Infrastructure (IDE OTALEX C) - a set of indicators that may contribute to the sustainability of the mentioned territory. Those indicators cover a lot of biophysical variables: hydrology, climate, soil, vegetation, and fauna, among many others. The criteria selection of such indicators was carried out taking into account the possibility of a constant updating on the EUROACE territory, as well as they adapting to the Sustainable Development Indicators (SDIs), which are used by the EU Sustainable Development Strategy (EUSDS). With the data collection procedure has been possible to relate soil, weather and vegetation, enabling to analyze issues regarding with the ecosystems functioning as well as their biodiversity and vegetal distribution on the soil, which along, with their structure shape the landscape, where the arboreal stratum constitutes one of they principal components. Major results show that those indicators are helpful tools for territorial management which favoring the conservation and sustainable development of the territories.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
