The Prognostic Significance of the Preoperative Full Blood Count after Resection of Colorectal Liver Metastases
Introduction. Increased preoperative platelet and neutrophil counts are risk factors for decreased survival in several different malignancies. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between overall or disease-free survival after resection of CRLM and the preoperative haematological parameters.
Methods. We reviewed a cohort of 140 patients who underwent resection of CRLM with curative intent, utilising prospectively maintained databases. Patient demographics, operative details, FBC, CRP, INR, histopathology results, and survival data were examined. Kaplan-Meier survival and Cox regression analyses were used to determine the impact of all variables on survival.
Results. 140 patients (96 males) with a median age of 67 years (range 33–82 years) underwent resection of CRLM. A significant correlation was exhibited between preoperative platelet count and neutrophil count (rho = 0.186, P = .028). When modelled as continuous covariates in a Cox regression hazards, an increased preoperative platelet (P = .02) and neutrophil counts (P ≤ .001) were significantly associated with overall survival. Of the haematological parameters assessed only preoperative platelet count showed a strong trend of association with disease free survival; however this failed to reach statistical significance (P = .076). Conclusions. Increased preoperative platelet and neutrophil counts are independent risk factors for decreased survival in patients undergoing resection of CRLM in our series of patients. These findings require validation in larger studies to determine their relationship with survival. Further research into the role of these cell types in tumour progression, particularly in the development and inhibition of angiogenesis, is warranted
Parallel Evaluation of Multi-join Queries
A number of execution strategies for parallel evaluation of multi-join queries have been proposed in the literature. In this paper we give a comparative performance evaluation of four execution strategies by implementing all of them on the same parallel database system, PRISMA/DB. Experiments have been done up to 80 processors. These strategies, coming from the literature, are named: Sequential Parallel, Synchronous Execution, Segmented Right-Deep, and Full Parallel. Based on the experiments clear guidelines are given when to use which strategy.

Impact echo data from bridge deck testing: Visualization and interpretation
Accurate assessment of the condition of bridges leads to their economic management. Ultrasonic seismic methods can be successfully used for this purpose through evaluation of changes in material characteristics and detection of the development of defects and zones of deterioration. The impact echo (IE) method is of special benefit in evaluation of corrosion-induced deck delamination, due to the method's nondestructive nature, speed of evaluation, and ability to detect delaminated zones at various stages of deterioration: from initial to progressed and developed. The traditional approach in condition assessment of bridge decks by IE on the basis of review of individual test point records and a new automated approach based on three-dimensional (3-D) data visualization are presented. The developed 3-D visualization platform allows both the advanced presentation and interpretation of IE data. The data presentation is provided as 3-D translucent visualizations of reflectors in a bridge deck section and horizontal and vertical cross sections through all distinctive zones, including a zone of delamination. The associated interpretation platform allows both (a) the overall assessment of the condition of the deck, through cumulative distributions and histograms of reflection intensity, and (b) identification of deteriorated zones of the deck for repair or rehabilitation in an efficient and intuitive way. The visualization platform effectively enables an IE device to be used as a type of bridge deck sonar device
An Android based Mobile Application for Color Recognition Assistance for Colorblind Individual Through Color Segmentation Using Color Threshold Algorithm
In the traditional setting, the only way to identify color-blindness is if an individual has a severe color deficiency which make it easy to identify due to individuals have difficulty in identifying colours. However, this is not the case for those suffering from mild color-blindness, as the only way to ensure that a person is truly color-blind with a mild case is to have a check up with an eye care professional. The proponents developed an Android mobile application that provides an Ishihara test, a standardized eye test which allows users to take a color-blind test to determine if an individual is color-blind. Existing adaptation tools, the color-blind uses an eyeglass or contact lenses modified for color vision deficiency to help distinguish colors. These types of products. Due to limited resources of supply in the Philippines, specialized type of eyeglasses is not readily available and there are people that cannot afford or are reluctant to purchase this type of device. The researchers developed an Android mobile application that aids with color-blind people using color segmentation and the Color Thresholding Algorithm

The Dialogue was hosted from the 21st to the 25th of January 2019 by the Karen community of Hin Lad Nai, Chiang Rai, Thailand, and it was co-convened and jointly designed by the Inter Mountain Peoples Education and Culture in Thailand Association (IMPECT) and Pgakenyaw Association for Sustainable Development (PASD) together with SwedBio at the Stockholm Resilience Centre and UNESCO Natural Science Sector
Reaction-kinetics of organo-clay hybrid films: in-situ IRRAS and AFM studies
In this paper we have reported the reaction kinetics of nano dimensional clay
saponite and hectorite with an amphiphilic cation octadecyl rhodamine B (RhB)
in hybrid Langmuir monolayer at the air-water interface. The surface
pressure-molecular area (pi-A) isotherms were strongly influenced by the
presence of clay with the lift-off area of the cationic amphiphile shifted to
progressively larger area. In-situ infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy
(IRRAS) was used to demonstrate the reaction kinetics. Time taken to complete
the reaction kinetics for RhB-hectorite hybrid films is larger than
RhB-saponite hybrid films. Atomic force microscopic images of hybrid
Langmuir-Blodgett films give compelling visual evidence of the incorporation of
clay platelets into the hybrid films and density of which increases with the
progress of reaction kinetics.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Quasi-phase-matched up- and down-conversion in periodically poled layered semiconductors
Nonlinear optics lies at the heart of classical and quantum light generation.
The invention of periodic poling revolutionized nonlinear optics and its
commercial applications by enabling robust quasi-phase-matching in crystals
such as lithium niobate. However, reaching useful frequency conversion
efficiencies requires macroscopic dimensions, limiting further technology
development and integration. Here we realize a periodically poled van der Waals
semiconductor (3R-MoS). Due to its exceptional nonlinearity, we achieve
macroscopic frequency conversion efficiency over a microscopic thickness of
only 1.2m, thinner than current systems with similar
performances. Due to unique intrinsic cavity effects, the thickness-dependent
quasi-phase-matched second harmonic signal surpasses the usual quadratic
enhancement by . Further, we report the broadband generation of photon
pairs at telecom wavelengths via quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric
down-conversion. This work opens the new and unexplored field of phase-matched
nonlinear optics with microscopic van der Waals crystals, unlocking
applications that require simple, ultra-compact technologies such as on-chip
entangled photon-pair sources for integrated quantum circuitry and sensing
Genome Analysis of Cytochrome P450s and Their Expression Profiles in Insecticide Resistant Mosquitoes, Culex quinquefasciatus
Here we report a study of the 204 P450 genes in the whole genome sequence of larvae and adult Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. The expression profiles of the P450 genes were compared for susceptible (S-Lab) and resistant mosquito populations, two different field populations of mosquitoes (HAmCq and MAmCq), and field parental mosquitoes (HAmCq G0 and MAmCqG0) and their permethrin selected offspring (HAmCq G8 and MAmCqG6). While the majority of the P450 genes were expressed at a similar level between the field parental strains and their permethrin selected offspring, an up- or down-regulation feature in the P450 gene expression was observed following permethrin selection. Compared to their parental strains and the susceptible S-Lab strain, HAmCqG8 and MAmCqG6 were found to up-regulate 11 and 6% of total P450 genes in larvae and 7 and 4% in adults, respectively, while 5 and 11% were down-regulated in larvae and 4 and 2% in adults. Although the majority of these up- and down-regulated P450 genes appeared to be developmentally controlled, a few were either up- or down-regulated in both the larvae and adult stages. Interestingly, a different gene set was found to be up- or down-regulated in the HAmCqG8 and MAmCqG6 mosquito populations in response to insecticide selection. Several genes were identified as being up- or down-regulated in either the larvae or adults for both HAmCqG8 and MAmCqG6; of these, CYP6AA7 and CYP4C52v1 were up-regulated and CYP6BY3 was down-regulated across the life stages and populations of mosquitoes, suggesting a link with the permethrin selection in these mosquitoes. Taken together, the findings from this study indicate that not only are multiple P450 genes involved in insecticide resistance but up- or down-regulation of P450 genes may also be co-responsible for detoxification of insecticides, insecticide selection, and the homeostatic response of mosquitoes to changes in cellular environment
Global management of a common, underrated surgical task during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gallstone disease. An international survery
Background: Since the Coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19) pandemic, the healthcare systems are reallocating their medical resources, with consequent narrowed access to elective surgery for benign conditions such as gallstone disease(GD). This survey represents an overview of the current policies regarding the surgical management of patients with GD during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A Web-based survey was conducted among 36 Hepato-Prancreato-Biliary surgeons from 14 Countries. Through a 17-item questionnaire, participants were asked about the local management of patients with GD since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: The majority (n = 26,72.2%) of surgeons reported an alarming decrease in the cholecystectomy rate for GD since the start of the pandemic, regardless of the Country: 19(52.7%) didn't operate any GD, 7(19.4%) reduced their surgical activity by 50–75%, 10(27.8%) by 25–50%, 1(2.8%) maintained regular activity. Currently, only patients with GD complications are operated. Thirty-two (88.9%) participants expect these changes to last for at least 3 months. In 15(41.6%) Centers, patients are currently being screened for SARS-CoV-2 infection before cholecystectomy [in 10(27.8%) Centers only in the presence of suspected infection, in 5(13.9%) routinely]. The majority of surgeons (n = 29,80.6%) have adopted a laparoscopic approach as standard surgery, 5(13.9%) perform open cholecystectomy in patients with known/suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection, and 2(5.6%) in all patients. Conclusion: In the ongoing COVID-19 emergency, the surgical treatment of GD is postponed, resulting in a huge number of untreated patients who could develop severe morbidity. Updated guidelines and dedicated pathways for patients with benign disease awaiting elective surgery are mandatory to prevent further aggravation of the overloaded healthcare systems
