El uso de animales y la simulación clínica : un modelo diferente de educación en medicina

El uso de animales en la investigación y la educación biomédica genera interés dentro del estudio de la bioética. Se describe la experiencia de algunos médicos con el uso de animales (perros) durante el curso de su carrera, sus vivencias y las distintas reacciones relacionadas con esta práctica. Se menciona un recuento histórico sobre el papel de los animales a través del tiempo, y la influencia que tuvo este proceso en el modelo de educación en medicina. El legado histórico influyó enormemente en el ámbito científico y biomédico en el cual, durante muchos años, se han utilizado animales en múltiples áreas así como en los modelos de educación en las facultades de medicina. Surgieron entonces muchas inquietudes alrededor del entrenamiento de los estudiantes de medicina con animales y en las diferentes facultades de medicina alrededor del mundo se empezaron a interrogar acerca de la necesidad de este tipo de prácticas. Se han desarrollado métodos que no requieren el uso de animales como es la simulación clínica que recrea un ambiente ideal en el contexto educativo en el cual se presentan situaciones predecibles, consistentes, estandarizadas, seguras y reproducibles. Después de una larga historia de eventos, experiencias y sufrimientos, existe hoy una sociedad más consciente del valor moral de estos animales y las generaciones más recientes de médicos tienen un desempeño similar al de aquellos que recibieron entrenamiento con animales.53-59The use of animals in biomedical research and education generates interest in the study of bioethics. It is described the experience of some physicians using animals (dogs) during the course of their careers, their experiences and the different reactions related to this practice. A historical account of the role of animals through time, and the influence they had in the mentioned medical education model. The historical legacy greatly has influenced the scientific and biomedical field, in which animals have been used for many areas, as well as the models of education in medical schools. Many concerns emerged about training medical students with animals and different medical schools around the world began to question about the need for such practices. Methods that do not require use of animals have been developed, such as clinical simulation that recreates an ideal environment in the educational context in which predictable, consistent, standardized, safe and reproducible situations arise. After a long history of events, experiences and sufferings, there is now a more conscious society in terms of moral value of these animals and the most recent generations of doctors have a similar performance to those who were trained with animals

Structural violence and high school students of northwest border of Chihuahua, Mexico

Objetivo. Exponer resultados de una investigación realizada entre 2011 y 2013 en el noroeste del Estado mexicano de Chihuahua, una región colindante con la tristemente célebre Ciudad Juárez. El tema de la investigación fue el impacto de la violencia estructural, desatada en el marco de la política de seguridad nacional de “guerra contra el narco” emprendida por el gobierno federal a partir de 2008 en esta entidad, en las dinámicas de la escuela y en la comunidad escolar. Metodología. La metodología empleada incluyó el uso de técnicas de recolección de datos cuantitativos y cualitativos. Resultados. El marco conceptual del estudio distingue entre la violencia estructural social, la violencia estatal, la institucional (dentro de la que se incluye la escolar) y la violencia entre pares estudiantes. Conclusiones. Se presentan en este artículo las reflexiones resultantes del estudio, con respecto a las percepciones que los estudiantes de escuelas secundarias tienen sobre la violencia que ha impactado la región en los últimos años.Objective. To present the results of a research project conducted between 2011 and 2013 in the northwestern Mexican state of Chihuahua, a region bordering the infamous City of Juarez. The research topic was the impact of structural violence triggered in the framework of the national security policy on “drugs war” launched by the federal government since 2008 in this state within the school and in the school community dynamics. Methodology. The methodology included the use of techniques for collecting quantitative and qualitative data. Results. The conceptual framework of the study distinguishes between social structural violence, state violence, institutional violence (within which the school is included), and student peers violence. Conclusions. Reflections resulting from the study with respect to the perceptions that high school students have about violence that has affected the region in recent years, are presented in this article

Subunit Asa1 spans all the peripheral stalk of the mitochondrial ATP synthase of the chlorophycean alga Polytomella sp.

peer reviewedMitochondrial F1FO-ATP synthase of chlorophycean algae is dimeric. It contains eight orthodox subunits (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, OSCP, a and c) and nine atypical subunits (Asa1 to 9). These subunits build the peripheral stalk of the enzyme and stabilize its dimeric structure. The location of the 66.1kDa subunit Asa1 has been debated. On one hand, it was found in a transient subcomplex that contained membrane-bound subunits Asa1/Asa3/Asa5/Asa8/a (Atp6)/c (Atp9). On the other hand, Asa1 was proposed to form the bulky structure of the peripheral stalk that contacts the OSCP subunit in the F1 sector. Here, we overexpressed and purified the recombinant proteins Asa1 and OSCP and explored their interactions in vitro, using immunochemical techniques and affinity chromatography. Asa1 and OSCP interact strongly, and the carboxy-terminal half of OSCP seems to be instrumental for this association. In addition, the algal ATP synthase was partially dissociated at relatively high detergent concentrations, and an Asa1/Asa3/Asa5/Asa8/a/c10 subcomplex was identified. Furthermore, Far-Western analysis suggests an Asa1-Asa8 interaction. Based on these results, a model is proposed in which Asa1 spans the whole peripheral arm of the enzyme, from a region close to the matrix-exposed side of the mitochondrial inner membrane to the F1 region where OSCP is located. 3D models show elongated, helix-rich structures for chlorophycean Asa1 subunits. Asa1 subunit probably plays a scaffolding role in the peripheral stalk analogous to the one of subunit b in orthodox mitochondrial enzymes

Bioética y desarrollo sostenible: entre el biocentrismo y el antropocentrismo y su sesgo economicista

The current crisis of sustainable development in terms of credibility and effect, with notorious environmental and cultural impacts, is a necessary reflection from contextual disciplines such as bioethics, which allow to rescue the anthropic component (rational and emotional) of the principle, without ignoring its other structural components: environmental and economic, the latter with a historical predominance that has conferred an economistic bias on the decisions taken from this context, and that have blurred the purpose of the principle as guarantor of quality of a good future life. With the research, which started from the deep bibliographical analysis by using general referents of the grounded theory, it was intended to identify the philosophical position that should guide the approach of the Bioethical analysis of Sustainable Development, placing it in the weak anthropocentrism or humanisms, from where rescues the importance of the human species without ignorance of the moral duty of consideration of the other forms of life that populate the planet, and the need for its future preservation in welfare conditions.La actual crisis del desarrollo sostenible en materia de credibilidad y efecto, con notorios impactos de tipo ambiental y cultural, supone una necesaria reflexión desde disciplinas contextuales como la bioética, que permitan rescatar el componente antrópico (racional y emocional) del principio, sin desconocer sus demás componentes estructurales: ambiental y económico, este último con predominio histórico que le han conferido un sesgo economicista a las decisiones tomadas desde este contexto, y que han desdibujado la finalidad del principio como garante de calidad de buena vida futura. Con la investigación, que partió del análisis bibliográfico profundo mediante el uso de referentes generales de la teoría fundamentada, se pretendió identificar la postura filosófica que debería guiar el abordaje del análisis Bioético del Desarrollo Sostenible, ubicándola en el antropocentrismo débil o humanismos, desde donde se rescata la importancia de la especie humana sin desconocimiento del deber moral de consideración de las demás formas de vida que pueblan el planeta, y la necesidad de su preservación futura en condiciones de bienestar
