No hemos encontrado diferencias
significativas entre los fémures de machos y de las
hembras y se demuestra la importancia que tienen las
inserciones capsulares en este mecanismo.Peer Reviewe
Peatlands and the carbon cycle: from local processes to global implications - a synthesis
Peatlands cover only 3% of the Earth's land surface but boreal and subarctic peatlands store about 15-30% of the world's soil carbon ( C) as peat. Despite their potential for large positive feedbacks to the climate system through sequestration and emission of greenhouse gases, peatlands are not explicitly included in global climate models and therefore in predictions of future climate change. In April 2007 a symposium was held in Wageningen, the Netherlands, to advance our understanding of peatland C cycling. This paper synthesizes the main findings of the symposium, focusing on (i) small-scale processes, (ii) C fluxes at the landscape scale, and (iii) peatlands in the context of climate change. The main drivers controlling most are related to some aspects of hydrology. Despite high spatial and annual variability in Net Ecosystem Exchange ( NEE), the differences in cumulative annual NEE are more a function of broad scale geographic location and physical setting than internal factors, suggesting the existence of strong feedbacks. In contrast, trace gas emissions seem mainly controlled by local factors. Key uncertainties remain concerning the existence of perturbation thresholds, the relative strengths of the CO2 and CH4 feedback, the links among peatland surface climate, hydrology, ecosystem structure and function, and trace gas biogeochemistry as well as the similarity of process rates across peatland types and climatic zones. Progress on these research areas can only be realized by stronger co-operation between disciplines that address different spatial and temporal scales
Analysis of the Scanning Tunneling Microscopy Images of the Charge Density Wave Phase in Quasi-one-dimensional Rb0.3MoO3
The experimental STM images for the CDW phase of the blue bronze RbMoO3 have
been successfully explained on the basis of first-principles DFT calculations.
Although the density of states near the Fermi level strongly concentrates in
two of the three types of Mo atoms Mo-II and Mo-III, the STM measurement mostly
probes the contribution of the uppermost O atoms of the surface, associated
with the Mo-IO6 octahedra. In addition, it is found that the surface
concentration of Rb atoms plays a key role in determining the surface nesting
vector and hence the periodicity of the CDW modulation. Significant
experimental inhomogeneities of the b* surface component of the wavevector of
the modulation, probed by STM, are reported. The calculated changes in the
surface nesting vector are consistent with the observed experimental
inhomogeneities.Comment: 4 pages 5 Figure
Sources and sinks of carbon dioxide in populous Asia
The recently concluded 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) agreed to limit the increase in global temperature to less than 2oC above pre-industrial levels, with a more aspirational target of 1.5oC. Achieving these policy goals will require extraordinary input from the scientific community to define anthropogenic emission targets that account for natural biosphere sources and sinks of carbon dioxide (CO2), consistent with the climate targets. Asian countries, being densely populated and emerging global economic powers, are key players in defining future emission trajectories. The average fossil emissions from the three regions are estimated to be 2.4, 0.5 and 0.3 PgC yr-1 for East, South and Southeast Asia, respectively, and have increased by 67, 58 and 33% over the period 2003-2012. Here, we estimate land biosphere CO2 fluxes using: 1) simulations of terrestrial ecosystem models driven with global and regional atmospheric and climate observations and 2) atmospheric CO2 inverse models. Based on observations of atmospheric CO2 and inverse models, we show that on average over the period 2003 - 2012, the land biosphere (excluding fossil fuel emissions) in the three Asian regions in our study is either a CO2 sink (0.35 PgC yr-1 in East Asia) or source neutral (South and Southeast Asia). Consistently, our terrestrial ecosystem modeling suggests that the land biosphere of South and Southeast Asia were nearly neutral, but disagrees for East Asia
First-principles characterization of the electronic structure of the molecular superconductor beta-(BEDT-TTF)2IBr2
The electronic structure of the molecular superconductor β−(BEDT−TTF)2IBr2 has been studied by means of first-principles density functional calculations. The calculated transverse cross section of the Fermi surface is in excellent agreement with that reconstructed from magnetoresistance measurements. It is shown that the cylindrical Fermi surface exhibits warping (the dispersion along the interlayer direction is of the order of 0.8–1.7 % of the dispersion in the conducting plane) and that it does not contain any additional small pocket. These features provide support for a recent proposal concerning the much debated question of the origin of the slow magnetoresistance oscillations exhibited by this material.Peer reviewe
Case 170: Pericardial fat necrosis
History: A 30-year-old man presented to our emergency department with acute pleuritic chest pain. He had no fever, dyspnea, or other symptoms, nor did he have a history of chest trauma. A physical examination yielded normal findings. Laboratory test results and electrocardiographic findings were normal. Axial chest computed tomography (CT) was performed
A Theoretical Study of Models for X2Y2 Zintl Ions
Ab initio and extended Hückel calculations have been used to discuss the bonding scheme in X₂Y₂ neutral and ionic main group clusters. A qualitative analysis suggests that two different electron counts, 20 and 22, are possible for the butterfly structures of these systems. This results from two orbital crossings in the correlation diagram for the tetrahedral (T_d) -\u3e butterfly (C_2v) -\u3e square-planar (D_2h) transformation. Detailed ab initio computations substantiate this analysis and show that the 20-electron butterfly structure becomes increasingly favored over the tetrahedral one in X₂Y₂ clusters when the 2 atoms have increasing electronegativity difference. These results are in agreement with the known structures for the Pb₂Sb₂²̄ and Sb₂Bi₂²̄ clusters (tetrahedral-like) and the Tl₂Te₂²̄ one (butterfly-like)
