Common bean reaction to angular leaf spot comprises transcriptional modulation of genes in the ALS10.1 QTL
Genetic resistance of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) against angular leaf spot (ALS), caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora griseola, is conferred by quantitative trait loci (OIL). In this study, we determined the gene content of the major OIL ALS10.1 located at the end of chromosome Pv10, and identified those that are responsive to ALS infection in resistant (CAL 143) and susceptible (IAC-UNA) genotypes. Based on the current version of the common bean reference genome, the ALS10.1 core region contains 323 genes. Gene Ontology (GO) analysis of these coding sequences revealed the presence of genes involved in signal perception and transduction, programmed cell death (PCD), and defense responses. Two putative R gene clusters were found at ALS10.1 containing evolutionary related coding sequences. Among them, the Phvu1.010G025700 was consistently up-regulated in the infected IAC-UNA suggesting its contribution to plant susceptibility to the fungus. We identified six other genes that were regulated during common bean response to P. griseola; three of them might be negative regulators of immunity as they showed opposite expression patterns during resistant and susceptible reactions at the initial phase of fungal infection. Citrus leprosis virus C infection results in hypersensitive-like response, suppression of the JA/ET plant defense pathway and promotion of the colonization of its mite vector
Leprosis is a serious disease of citrus caused by Citrus leprosis virus C (CiLV-C, genus Cilevirus) whose transmission is mediated by false spider mites of the genus Brevipalpus. CiLV-C infection does not systemically spread in any of its known host plants, thus remaining restricted to local lesions around the feeding sites of viruliferous mites. To get insight into this unusual pathosystem, we evaluated the expression profiles of genes involved in defense mechanisms of Arabidopsis thaliana and Citrus sinensis upon infestation with non-viruliferous and viruliferous mites by using reverse-transcription qPCR. These results were analyzed together with the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the appearance of dead cells as assessed by histochemical assays. After interaction with non-viruliferous mites, plants locally accumulated ROS and triggered the salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonate/ethylene (JA/ET) pathways. ERE branch of the JA/ET pathways was highly activated. In contrast, JA pathway genes were markedly suppressed upon the CiLV-C infection mediated by viruliferous mites. Viral infection also intensified the ROS burst and cell death, and enhanced the expression of genes involved in the RNA silencing mechanism and SA pathway. After 13 days of infestation of two sets of Arabidopsis plants with non-viruliferous and viruliferous mites, the number of mites in the CiLV-C infected Arabidopsis plants was significantly higher than in those infested with the non-viruliferous ones. Oviposition of the viruliferous mites occurred preferentially in the CiLV-C infected leaves. Evaluation of the quality of the Voluntary Geographic Information for the road network in Bogotá D.C
The production of Voluntary Geographic Information has been growing considerably and continues to be an active area of research. However, the lack of knowledge about the quality of information generated on a voluntary and participatory basis raises challenges and questions about its use. In the review carried out for the Colombian case, no studies related to the subject were identified; consequently, this study is presented on the evaluation of the quality of this type of information on the road network of Bogotá with respect to completeness, positional accuracy and thematic accuracy. This evaluation was carried out by means of a semi-automatic process that uses a mobile buffer and the centroid of the roads to make the corresponding comparisons between two data sources. The results found reveal that the method used allowed to compare up to 85.0% of the data, and that the OpenStreetMap mesh has a completeness of 85.4%, over the entire area of Bogotá. A positional accuracy of 3.98 m and a thematic accuracy related to the percentage of error in the attributes: Road hierarchy, direction of flow and road naming of 35.8%, 15.0% and 34.6% respectively. The quality evaluated through completeness, positional and thematic accuracy in synergistic terms is deficient with respect to the minimum quality levels established in the standard data model, however, the evaluation for each of the attributes shows an acceptable quality in terms of completeness and thematic accuracy
Trail Marking by Caterpillars of the Silverspot Butterfly Dione Juno Huascuma
A pheromone is implicated in the trail marking behavior of caterpillars of the nymphalid silverspot butterfly, Dione juno huascuma (Reakirt) (Lepidoptera: Heliconiinae) that feed gregariously on Passiflora (Malpighiales: Passifloraceae) vines in Mexico. Although they mark pathways leading from one feeding site to another with silk, this study shows that the silk was neither adequate nor necessary to elicit trail following behavior. Caterpillars marked trails with a long-lived pheromone that was deposited when they brushed the ventral surfaces of the tips of their abdomens along branch pathways. The caterpillars distinguished between pathways deposited by different numbers of siblings and between trails of different ages. Caterpillars also preferentially followed the trails of conspecifics over those of another nymphalid, Nymphalis antiopa L., the mourning cloak butterfly
When enough should be enough: Improving the use of current agricultural lands could meet production demands and spare natural habitats in Brazil
Providing food and other products to a growing human population while safeguarding natural ecosystems and the provision of their services is a significant scientific, social and political challenge. With food demand likely to double over the next four decades, anthropization is already driving climate change and is the principal force behind species extinction, among other environmental impacts. The sustainable intensification of production on current agricultural lands has been suggested as a key solution to the competition for land between agriculture and natural ecosystems. However, few investigations have shown the extent to which these lands can meet projected demands while considering biophysical constraints. Here we investigate the improved use of existing agricultural lands and present insights into avoiding future competition for land. We focus on Brazil, a country projected to experience the largest increase in agricultural production over the next four decades and the richest nation in terrestrial carbon and biodiversity. Using various models and climatic datasets, we produced the first estimate of the carrying capacity of Brazil's 115 million hectares of cultivated pasturelands. We then investigated if the improved use of cultivated pasturelands would free enough land for the expansion of meat, crops, wood and biofuel, respecting biophysical constraints (i.e., terrain, climate) and including climate change impacts. We found that the current productivity of Brazilian cultivated pasturelands is 32–34% of its potential and that increasing productivity to 49–52% of the potential would suffice to meet demands for meat, crops, wood products and biofuels until at least 2040, without further conversion of natural ecosystems. As a result up to 14.3 Gt CO2 Eq could be mitigated. The fact that the country poised to undergo the largest expansion of agricultural production over the coming decades can do so without further conversion of natural habitats provokes the question whether the same can be true in other regional contexts and, ultimately, at the global scale
Nut production in Bertholletia excelsa across a logged forest mosaic: implications for multiple forest use
Although many examples of multiple-use forest management may be found in tropical smallholder systems, few studies provide empirical support for the integration of selective timber harvesting with non-timber forest product (NTFP) extraction. Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa, Lecythidaceae) is one of the world’s most economically-important NTFP species extracted almost entirely from natural forests across the Amazon Basin. An obligate out-crosser, Brazil nut flowers are pollinated by large-bodied bees, a process resulting in a hard round fruit that takes up to 14 months to mature. As many smallholders turn to the financial security provided by timber, Brazil nut fruits are increasingly being harvested in logged forests. We tested the influence of tree and stand-level covariates (distance to nearest cut stump and local logging intensity) on total nut production at the individual tree level in five recently logged Brazil nut concessions covering about 4000 ha of forest in Madre de Dios, Peru. Our field team accompanied Brazil nut harvesters during the traditional harvest period (January-April 2012 and January-April 2013) in order to collect data on fruit production. Three hundred and ninety-nine (approximately 80%) of the 499 trees included in this study were at least 100 m from the nearest cut stump, suggesting that concessionaires avoid logging near adult Brazil nut trees. Yet even for those trees on the edge of logging gaps, distance to nearest cut stump and local logging intensity did not have a statistically significant influence on Brazil nut production at the applied logging intensities (typically 1–2 timber trees removed per ha). In one concession where at least 4 trees ha-1 were removed, however, the logging intensity covariate resulted in a marginally significant (0.09) P value, highlighting a potential risk for a drop in nut production at higher intensities. While we do not suggest that logging activities should be completely avoided in Brazil nut rich forests, when a buffer zone cannot be observed, low logging intensities should be implemented. The sustainability of this integrated management system will ultimately depend on a complex series of socioeconomic and ecological interactions. Yet we submit that our study provides an important initial step in understanding the compatibility of timber harvesting with a high value NTFP, potentially allowing for diversification of forest use strategies in Amazonian Perù
Evidences for subclinic chronic autoimmune thyroid disease in girls with Turner Syndrome
Patients with Turner syndrome (TS) frequently exhibit transient, recurrent and asymptomatic variations of TSH and/or thyroid hormones (TH). This work was carried out to evaluate thyroid function and structure in patients with TS who had had such variations in hormone concentrations. Our sample comprised 24 patients, 17 less than 20-years old. Evaluation included serum levels of TSH, free T4, total T3, TPO and Tg autoantibodies, thyroid ultrasound (US) and scintigraphy with 99mTc-pertechnetate. Thirteen patients had abnormal TSH and/or TH levels; 23 exhibited US features compatible with chronic thyroid disorder, particularly thyromegaly (established according to volume expected for stature) and heterogeneous echogenicity. Uptake was normal in 21 cases and tracer distribution was homogeneous in 22. The finding of abnormal hormone concentrations was independent of age, length of time since the first similar finding, thyroid autoantibodies, number of abnormalities at US and abnormal scintigraphic findings. Patients aged more than 20 years had higher frequency of thyroid antibodies and heterogeneous echogenicity, and thyroid volume was significantly correlated to length of time since detection of the first hormone variation, indicating progressive thyroid disease. These results suggest that subclinical thyroid dysfunction in TS is due to chronic autoimmune thyroid disease.O seguimento de pacientes com síndrome de Turner (ST) freqüentemente revela alterações transitórias, recorrentes e assintomáticas de TSH e/ou hormônios tireóideos (HT). Neste trabalho foram avaliadas estrutura e função da tireóide em portadoras da ST com história de alterações prévias desses hormônios. A casuística incluiu 24 pacientes, 17 com menos de 20 anos, avaliadas laboratorialmente pelas concentrações séricas de TSH, T4 livre, T3 e anticorpos anti-TPO e anti-Tg, e morfologicamente por ultra-sonografia (USG) e cintilografia com pertecnetato-99mTc. Havia alterações de TSH e/ou HT em 13 casos, e em 23 havia alterações USG compatíveis com doença crônica da tireóide, particularmente tireomegalia (estabelecida de acordo com o volume esperado para a estatura) e heterogeneidade do parênquima. A captação foi normal em 21 casos e a distribuição do radiofármaco, homogênea em 22. As alterações hormonais foram independentes da idade, do tempo de evolução, da presença de anticorpos, do número de anomalias USG e de alterações cintilográficas. Pacientes maiores de 20 anos apresentaram maior freqüência de anticorpos e de hipoecogenicidade do parênquima, e houve correlação positiva entre o volume tireóideo e o tempo de evolução, indicando comprometimento progressivo da glândula. 60°N was +2.0°C, relative to the 1981–2010 average value (Fig. 5.1). This marks a new high for the record. The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015.
