    Training the Gatekeeper: how an EAP pre-sessional programme at a UK university influences the emerging identities of its teachers.

    Research to date on EAP identities is far from extensive with little to no attention paid to pre-sessional teachers (those employed on short programmes of EAP study for students entering higher education in English medium HE institutions) and description of how their EAP identities emerge, lacking in sufficient depth. Although an important and informative basis to advance research on EAP teacher identity, Hadley’s (2015) analysis does not describe the problem in the context of pre-sessional teachers on short term programmes or provide a description of the more specific mechanisms by which the formation or transformation of identity might happen. Employing a Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) analysis, the study seeks to identify the underlying principle(s) for the basis to (what constitutes legitimate knowledge) and focus (what is selected for study on the programme) of EAP knowledge and how the principles of the pre-sessional programme and those of teachers may align. The pre-sessional programme is found to be influential in the professionals’ discursive rationalisations and justifications for what constitutes legitimate EAP knowledge. Practitioners on the programme appear to legitimise the bases and focus of knowledge described and framed by the programme course designers and managers. In legitimising such ideas and beliefs, teachers may re-shape their identities by aligning with the principles of the programme. Those who will not are likely to seek other opportunities outside the programme. Dominant identities seek to preserve their project and are more willing to concede their beliefs and re-orient their stances to do so. Emerging from this is the ‘Gatekeeper’; disposed to re-negotiate her stance in response to the direction of the programme. This implies that, far from being passive recipients of structural influence, teachers on the pre-sessional are active agents in the transformation of what EAP means in the local practice context. A further conclusion is that the programme may affect the future of the pre-sessional EAP practitioner and pre-sessional EAP itself, reducing what professional knowledge is appropriate to teaching roles and how their role, ever adopting new orientations and technologies, is transformed to the point of losing some of its essential modalities. One example of this might be the capacity to help students understand and utilise the often-nuanced structures, vocabularies, and usages of academic English. It is then argued that a restricted professional learning context may fail to provide the plurality and depth of meanings that can equip the teacher with the resources to adequately negotiate the complexities of Academic English. Limited meanings of what EAP is and its purpose in the local context may constrain the effectiveness of programmes and their teachers in providing a varied and responsive learning environment

    Stereochemistry of carbon nanotubes for electronic applications

    Results are presented from studies to prepare carbon nanotubes of single geometry. Carbon nanotubes of certain stereochemistry have been found to be conductive. Others have been found to be excellent transistors, and together nanoelectronic devices have already been formed from them including logic gate circuits. Two synthetic approaches have been tried, namely plasma arcing in the presence of additives and ball milling. In plasma arcing, cathode deposits are altered by the presence of naphthalene in the feed material. The mixture of nanotubes so formed has a larger average void size than that formed in the absence of naphthalene. The results support proposed mechanisms of nanotube formation which involve growth by incorporation of carbon atoms into open tubes. They also show that naphthalene can be directly incorporated into fullerene black and thereby increase the number of hexagonal sheet structures in the carbon deposit.     Using Simulation Models to Evaluate Ape Nest Survey Techniques

    BACKGROUND: Conservationists frequently use nest count surveys to estimate great ape population densities, yet the accuracy and precision of the resulting estimates are difficult to assess. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used mathematical simulations to model nest building behavior in an orangutan population to compare the quality of the population size estimates produced by two of the commonly used nest count methods, the 'marked recount method' and the 'matrix method.' We found that when observers missed even small proportions of nests in the first survey, the marked recount method produced large overestimates of the population size. Regardless of observer reliability, the matrix method produced substantial overestimates of the population size when surveying effort was low. With high observer reliability, both methods required surveying approximately 0.26% of the study area (0.26 km(2) out of 100 km(2) in this simulation) to achieve an accurate estimate of population size; at or above this sampling effort both methods produced estimates within 33% of the true population size 50% of the time. Both methods showed diminishing returns at survey efforts above 0.26% of the study area. The use of published nest decay estimates derived from other sites resulted in widely varying population size estimates that spanned nearly an entire order of magnitude. The marked recount method proved much better at detecting population declines, detecting 5% declines nearly 80% of the time even in the first year of decline. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: These results highlight the fact that neither nest surveying method produces highly reliable population size estimates with any reasonable surveying effort, though either method could be used to obtain a gross population size estimate in an area. Conservation managers should determine if the quality of these estimates are worth the money and effort required to produce them, and should generally limit surveying effort to 0.26% of the study area, unless specific management goals require more intensive sampling. Using site- and time- specific nest decay rates (or the marked recount method) are essential for accurate population size estimation. Marked recount survey methods with sufficient sampling effort hold promise for detecting population declines

    Exploring variations in childhood stunting in Nigeria using league table, control chart and spatial analysis

    Background: Stunting, linear growth retardation is the best measure of child health inequalities as it captures multiple dimensions of children’s health, development and environment where they live. The developmental priorities and socially acceptable health norms and practices in various regions and states within Nigeria remains disaggregated and with this, comes the challenge of being able to ascertain which of the regions and states identifies with either high or low childhood stunting to further investigate the risk factors and make recommendations for action oriented policy decisions. Methods: We used data from the birth histories included in the 2008 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) to estimate childhood stunting. Stunting was defined as height for age below minus two standard deviations from the median height for age of the standard World Health Organization reference population. We plotted control charts of the proportion of childhood stunting for the 37 states (including federal capital, Abuja) in Nigeria. The Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) were used as a measure of the overall clustering and is assessed by a test of a null hypothesis. Results: Childhood stunting is high in Nigeria with an average of about 39%. The percentage of children with stunting ranged from 11.5% in Anambra state to as high as 60% in Kebbi State. Ranking of states with respect to childhood stunting is as follows: Anambra and Lagos states had the least numbers with 11.5% and 16.8% respectively while Yobe, Zamfara, Katsina, Plateau and Kebbi had the highest (with more than 50% of their underfives having stunted growth). Conclusions: Childhood stunting is high in Nigeria and varied significantly across the states. The northern states have a higher proportion than the southern states. There is an urgent need for studies to explore factors that may be responsible for these special cause variations in childhood stunting in Nigeria

    Attachment styles and personal growth following romantic breakups: The mediating roles of distress, rumination, and tendency to rebound

Study 1 (N = 411) and Study 2 (N = 465) measured attachment style, breakup distress, and personal growth; Study 2 additionally measured ruminative reflection, brooding, and proclivity to rebound with new partners. Structural equation modelling revealed in both studies that anxiety was indirectly associated with greater personal growth through heightened breakup distress, whereas avoidance was indirectly associated with lower personal growth through inhibited breakup distress. Study 2 further showed that the positive association of breakup distress with personal growth was accounted for by enhanced reflection and brooding, and that anxious individuals’ greater personal growth was also explained by their proclivity to rebound. These findings suggest that anxious individuals’ hyperactivated breakup distress may act as a catalyst for personal growth by promoting the cognitive processing of breakup-related thoughts and emotions, whereas avoidant individuals’ deactivated distress may inhibit personal growth by suppressing this cognitive work

    Interaction of Clostridium perfringens epsilon toxin with the plasma membrane: The role of amino acids Y42, Y43 and H162

To date, most in vitro studies of Etx have used the Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell line. However, studies using Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells engineered to express the putative Etx receptor, myelin and lymphocyte protein (MAL), suggest that amino acids important for Etx activity differ between species. In this study, we investigated the role of amino acids Y42, Y43 and H162, previously identified as important in Etx activity towards MDCK cells, in Etx activity towards CHO-human MAL (CHO-hMAL) cells, human red blood cells (hRBCs) and synthetic bilayers using site-directed mutants of Etx. We show that in CHO-hMAL cells Y42 is critical for Etx binding and not Y43 as in MDCK cells, indicating that surface exposed tyrosine residues in the receptor binding domain of Etx impact efficiency of cell binding to MAL-expressing cells in a species-specific manner.     The missions of medical schools: the pursuit of health in the service of society

    Mission statements and role documents of medical schools in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Australia have been examined on their Internet Web sites and categorised in purpose, content and presentation. The format and content are highly variable, but there is a common vision of three integral roles, namely, education, advancement of knowledge and service to society. Other frequent themes include tradition and historical perspective, service for designated communities, and benchmarking to accreditation standards. Differences in content reflect variable interpretation of the notion of "mission", and local or national characteristics such as institutional affiliations, the types, levels and organisation of medical education, relationships with health systems, and extent of multi-professional education. Outcomes data and measures of medical school performance referenced to the institution's stated missions are rarely encountered. Mission documents placed on the Internet are in the public domain. These Web sites and documents and linked information constitute a valuable new resource for international exchange of approaches and ideas in medical education and generally in academic medicine. Routine inclusion of outcome or performance data could help to demonstrate the community roles and social accountability of medical schools This paper proposes that partial standardisation of these Web documents could enhance their value both internally and for external readers.
