In this work, the flow signal Expiratory Pause (EP) temporal analysis is used in 18 patients with obstructive lung diseases going through spontaneous breathing trial at weaning process. The main objective was to identify the patients
who were successfully disconnected (success group: 9 patients), and those who were not (failure and reintubated group: 9 patients). A variable selection stage was done by
mean group comparison and step wise variable inclusion, leading to a 3 parameters set: EP time median; cycle time mean; and median absolute deviation of the EP maxima local number. Next, this set was used in a classifier based on linear
discriminant analysis, which results in 17 patients (94.4%) correctly classified, with 88.9% of specificity (Sp) and 100% of sensitivity (Se). Finally, applying the leave-one-out cross validation method, results were 88.9% of correctly classified patients (Sp=77.8% and Se=100%). In conclusion, the proposed
parameters showed a good performance and could be used to
help therapists to wean patients with obstructive diseases.Postprint (published version
The study had the purpose of evaluating the effects of irrigation and nitrogen fertilization levels upon fig-tree orchards (harvest 1991/1992). A randomized split-plot block design was installed with six irrigation levels (0, 25, 50, 75,100 and 125% of Class A Pan Evaporation) and six nitrogen levels (0, 150, 300, 450, 600 and 750 g/plant), with four repetitions. According to the statistical analysis, significant effects of water supply were verified on ripe fruit harvest, total productivity, branch lenght and ripe fruit heigth and diameter. Nitrogen fertilization effects on ripe fruit harvest and branch lenght were also detected.
Zero Modes and the Atiyah-Singer Index in Noncommutative Instantons
We study the bosonic and fermionic zero modes in noncommutative instanton
backgrounds based on the ADHM construction. In k instanton background in U(N)
gauge theory, we show how to explicitly construct 4Nk (2Nk) bosonic (fermionic)
zero modes in the adjoint representation and 2k (k) bosonic (fermionic) zero
modes in the fundamental representation from the ADHM construction. The number
of fermionic zero modes is also shown to be exactly equal to the Atiyah-Singer
index of the Dirac operator in the noncommutative instanton background. We
point out that (super)conformal zero modes in non-BPS instantons are affected
by the noncommutativity. The role of Lorentz symmetry breaking by the
noncommutativity is also briefly discussed to figure out the structure of U(1)
instantons.Comment: v3: 24 pages, Latex, corrected typos, references added, to appear in

Testing spatial noncommutativiy via the Aharonov-Bohm effect
The possibility of detecting noncommutative space relics is analyzed using
the Aharonov-Bohm effect. We show that, if space is noncommutative, the
holonomy receives non-trivial kinematical corrections that will produce a
diffraction pattern even when the magnetic flux is quantized. The scattering
problem is also formulated, and the differential cross section is calculated.
Our results can be extrapolated to high energy physics and the bound is found. If this bound holds, then noncommutative
effects could be explored in scattering experiments measuring differential
cross sections for small angles. The bound state Aharonov- Bohm effect is also
discussed.Comment: 16 pp, Revtex 4, 2 fig, new references added. To appear in PR
Propagators in Noncommutative Instantons
We explicitly construct Green functions for a field in an arbitrary
representation of gauge group propagating in noncommutative instanton
backgrounds based on the ADHM construction. The propagators for spinor and
vector fields can be constructed in terms of those for the scalar field in
noncommutative instanton background. We show that the propagators in the
adjoint representation are deformed by noncommutativity while those in the
fundamental representation have exactly the same form as the commutative case.Comment: 28 pages, Latex, v2: A few typos correcte
Studies on the mineral nutrition of the rice plant: IX. time course on the uptake of macronutrients by the variety IAC-47
Rice plants, variety IAC-47, were grown in the nº 2 nutrient solution of HOAGLAND & ARNON (1950) until the end of the life cycle. Plants were sampled at well defined physiological periods for analyses. It was verified that trends for levvelling off occurred in the case of accumulation of N, K and Ca. Translocation from leaves to grain was observed with respect to N, P and K. Maximum rates of uptake of all elements took place from 50 to 100 days after germination.
