Manufacturing with the Sun
Concentrated solar radiation is now a viable alternative source for many advanced manufacturing processes. Researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have demonstrated the feasibility of processes such as solar induced surface transformation of materials (SISTM), solar based manufacturing, and solar pumped lasers. Researchers are also using sunlight to decontaminate water and soils polluted with organic compounds; these techniques could provide manufacturers with innovative alternatives to traditional methods of waste management. The solar technology that is now being integrated into today's manufacturing processes offer greater potential for tomorrow, especially as applied to the radiation abundant environment available in space and on the lunar surface
The Population of Tiny Near-Earth Objects Observed by NEOWISE
Only a very small fraction of the asteroid population at size scales
comparable to the object that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia has been
discovered to date, and physical properties are poorly characterized. We
present previously unreported detections of 106 close approaching near-Earth
objects (NEOs) by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission's NEOWISE
project. These infrared observations constrain physical properties such as
diameter and albedo for these objects, many of which are found to be smaller
than 100 m. Because these objects are intrinsically faint, they were detected
by WISE during very close approaches to the Earth, often at large apparent
on-sky velocities. We observe a trend of increasing albedo with decreasing
size, but as this sample of NEOs was discovered by visible light surveys, it is
likely that selection biases against finding small, dark NEOs influence this

Small scale structures in three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
We investigate using direct numerical simulations with grids up to 1536^3
points, the rate at which small scales develop in a decaying three-dimensional
MHD flow both for deterministic and random initial conditions. Parallel current
and vorticity sheets form at the same spatial locations, and further
destabilize and fold or roll-up after an initial exponential phase. At high
Reynolds numbers, a self-similar evolution of the current and vorticity maxima
is found, in which they grow as a cubic power of time; the flow then reaches a
finite dissipation rate independent of Reynolds number.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic computations inside a rotating sphere
Numerical solutions of the incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations
are reported for the interior of a rotating, perfectly-conducting, rigid
spherical shell that is insulator-coated on the inside. A previously-reported
spectral method is used which relies on a Galerkin expansion in
Chandrasekhar-Kendall vector eigenfunctions of the curl. The new ingredient in
this set of computations is the rigid rotation of the sphere. After a few
purely hydrodynamic examples are sampled (spin down, Ekman pumping, inertial
waves), attention is focused on selective decay and the MHD dynamo problem. In
dynamo runs, prescribed mechanical forcing excites a persistent velocity field,
usually turbulent at modest Reynolds numbers, which in turn amplifies a small
seed magnetic field that is introduced. A wide variety of dynamo activity is
observed, all at unit magnetic Prandtl number. The code lacks the resolution to
probe high Reynolds numbers, but nevertheless interesting dynamo regimes turn
out to be plentiful in those parts of parameter space in which the code is
accurate. The key control parameters seem to be mechanical and magnetic
Reynolds numbers, the Rossby and Ekman numbers (which in our computations are
varied mostly by varying the rate of rotation of the sphere) and the amount of
mechanical helicity injected. Magnetic energy levels and magnetic dipole
behavior are exhibited which fluctuate strongly on a time scale of a few eddy
turnover times. These seem to stabilize as the rotation rate is increased until

The need for novel strategies to address postoperative pain associated with cardiac surgery: A commentary and introduction to "SMArTVIEW".
Background: With coronary heart disease affecting over 2.4 million Canadians, annual cardiac and major vascular surgery rates are on the rise. Unrelieved postoperative pain is among the top five causes of hospital readmission following surgery; little is done to address this postoperative complication. Barriers to effective pain assessment and management following cardiac and major vascular surgery have been conceptualized on patient, health care provider, and system levels. Purpose: In this commentary, we review common patient, health care provider, and system-level barriers to effective postoperative pain assessment and management following cardiac and major vascular surgery. We then outline the SMArTVIEW intervention, with particular attention to components designed to optimize postoperative pain assessment and management. Methods: In conceptualizing the SMArTVIEW intervention design, we sought to address a number of these barriers by meeting the following design objectives: (1) orchestrating a structured process for regular postoperative pain assessment and management; (2) ensuring adequate clinician preparation for postoperative pain assessment and management in the context of virtual care; and (3) enfranchising patients to become active self-managers and to work with their health care providers to manage their pain postoperatively. Conclusions: Innovative approaches to address these barriers are a current challenge to health care providers and researchers alike. SMArTVIEW is spearheading this paradigm shift within clinical research to address barriers that impair effective postoperative pain management by actively engaging health care providers and patients in an accessible format (i.e., digital health solution) to give primacy to the need of postoperative pain assessment and management following cardiac and major vascular surgery
Development Of Al-B-C Master Alloy Under External Fields
This study investigates the application of external fields in the development of an Al-B-C alloy, with the aim of synthesizing in situ Al3BC particles. A combination of ultrasonic cavitation and distributive mixing was applied for uniform dispersion of insoluble graphite particles in the Al melt, improving their wettability and its subsequent incorporation into the Al matrix. Lower operating temperatures facilitated the reduction in the amount of large clusters of reaction phases, with Al3BC being identified as the main phase in XRD analysis. The distribution of Al3BC particles was quantitatively evaluated. Grain refinement experiments reveal that Al-B-C alloy can act as a master alloy for Al-4Cu and AZ91D alloys, with average grain size reduction around 50% each at 1wt%Al-1.5B-2C additions
Linear Contraction Behavior of Low-Carbon, Low-Alloy Steels During and After Solidification Using Real-Time Measurements
A technique for measuring the linear contraction during and after solidification of low-alloy steel was developed and used for examination of two commercial low-carbon and low-alloy steel grades. The effects of several experimental parameters on the contraction were studied. The solidification contraction behavior was described using the concept of rigidity in a solidifying alloy, evolution of the solid fraction, and the microstructure development during solidification. A correlation between the linear contraction properties in the solidification range and the hot crack susceptibility was proposed and used for the estimation of hot cracking susceptibility for two studied alloys and verified with the real casting practice. The technique allows estimation of the contraction coefficient of commercial steels in a wide range of temperatures and could be helpful for computer simulation and process optimization during continuous casting. © 2013 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International
Language attitudes and use in a transplanted setting: Greek Cypriots in London
In this paper we explore language attitudes and use in the Greek Cypriot community in London, England. Our study is based on an earlier survey carried out in Nicosia, Cyprus and we compare attitudes to language and reported language use in the two communities. We thereby highlight the significance of sociolinguistic variables on similar groups of speakers. We further extend our investigation to include codeswitching practices in the London community.

Analysis of language attitudes and use within the Greek-Cypriot population of London, and comparisons with findings in Nicosia, reflect symbolic forces operating in the two contexts. Despite obvious differences between the two communities, (most obviously the official languages and distinct cultural backgrounds of the two nations), the Greek Cypriot Dialect continues to play an active role in both. English is however the ‘default choice‘ for young Cypriots in the UK and Standard Modern Greek occupies a much more limited role than in Cyprus. It is argued that differences in language attitudes and use can be interpreted in light of different market forces operating in the nation (i.e. Cyprus) and the Diaspora (i.e. UK)
Micro language planning for multilingual education : agency in local contexts
This paper overviews some of the domains of application of micro-level language planning approaches to foster multilingual education. It examines the language planning of local agents and the contexts in which their work contributes to multilingual education, either to expand or limit educational possibilities. It identifies four broad contexts of language planning activity in which local agents work: the local implementation of macro-level policy, contestation of macro-level policy, addressing local needs in the absence of macro-level policy and opening new possibilities for developing multilingualism. These contexts provide a way of framing the contribution that micro language planning work and local agents can make to multilingual education
