Coping with economic shocks: Consumption Smoothing and the 1998 Russian Financial Crisis
Applying quantile regression techniques to Russian data we investigate the channels through which individuals experience changes in their well being. We find that married individuals in non-rural households with university-educated heads are less vulnerable to severe welfare shocks. For the most vulnerable individuals the labour market plays a key role in transmitting the effects of aggregate shocks through the unemployment channel whereas those individuals able to maintain their employment status are more able to cope with economic shocks. While increases in pension payments help individuals to cope with shocks, it transpires that vulnerable individuals rely more broadly on the support of relatives and the produce of their garden plots and dachas
DNMTs are required for delayed genome instability caused by radiation

The article may be redistributed, reproduced, and reused for non-commercial purposes, provided the original source is properly cited - Copyright @ 2012 Landes Bioscience.The ability of ionizing radiation to initiate genomic instability has been harnessed in the clinic where the localized delivery of controlled doses of radiation is used to induce cell death in tumor cells. Though very effective as a therapy, tumor relapse can occur in vivo and its appearance has been attributed to the radio-resistance of cells with stem cell-like features. The molecular mechanisms underlying these phenomena are unclear but there is evidence suggesting an inverse correlation between radiation-induced genomic instability and global hypomethylation. To further investigate the relationship between DNA hypomethylation, radiosensitivity and genomic stability in stem-like cells we have studied mouse embryonic stem cells containing differing levels of DNA methylation due to the presence or absence of DNA methyltransferases. Unexpectedly, we found that global levels of methylation do not determine radiosensitivity. In particular, radiation-induced delayed genomic instability was observed at the Hprt gene locus only in wild-type cells. Furthermore, absence of Dnmt1 resulted in a 10-fold increase in de novo Hprt mutation rate, which was unaltered by radiation. Our data indicate that functional DNMTs are required for radiation-induced genomic instability, and that individual DNMTs play distinct roles in genome stability. We propose that DNMTS may contribute to the acquirement of radio-resistance in stem-like cells.This study is funded by NOTE, BBSRC and the Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Research Fellowship
Deep Ordinal Reinforcement Learning
Reinforcement learning usually makes use of numerical rewards, which have
nice properties but also come with drawbacks and difficulties. Using rewards on
an ordinal scale (ordinal rewards) is an alternative to numerical rewards that
has received more attention in recent years. In this paper, a general approach
to adapting reinforcement learning problems to the use of ordinal rewards is
presented and motivated. We show how to convert common reinforcement learning
algorithms to an ordinal variation by the example of Q-learning and introduce
Ordinal Deep Q-Networks, which adapt deep reinforcement learning to ordinal
rewards. Additionally, we run evaluations on problems provided by the OpenAI
Gym framework, showing that our ordinal variants exhibit a performance that is
comparable to the numerical variations for a number of problems. We also give
first evidence that our ordinal variant is able to produce better results for

Cognitive Analytic Therapy in People with Learning Disability: An investigation into the common reciprocal roles found within this client group
Developments over the last twenty years have shown that, contrary to previous opinion, people with learning disabilities can benefit from psychotherapy (Sinason 1992; Kroese, Dagnan & Loumidia, 1997). Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) has been adapted for use with a learning disability population (Ryle 2002). CAT collaboratively examines the Reciprocal Roles (RRs) a client plays in relationships. These are impacted by clients’ experiences of the world. The aim of this research is to identify which RRs may become apparent in working with people with learning disabilities. The therapy notes of participants (n=16) who had undergone CAT were examined and analysed using content analysis. Twenty-two different RRs were found. Four common Reciprocal Roles and two common idealised Reciprocal Roles were identified. Other observations about the data are presented. The limitations and clinical implications of the study are discussed
The effect of cooling prior to and during exercise on exercise performance and capacity in the heat: a meta-analysis
Exercise is impaired in hot, compared to moderate, conditions. The development of hyperthermia is strongly linked to the impairment and as a result, many different strategies have been investigated to combat this. This meta-analysis focused on one of the most popular strategies: cooling. Pre-cooling has received the most attention but more recently cooling applied during the bout of exercise has also been investigated and both were reviewed. We conducted a literature search and retrieved twenty-eight articles which investigated the effect of cooling administered either prior to (n=23) or during (n=5) an exercise test in hot (WBGT >26°C) conditions. Mean and weighted effect sizes (Cohen’s d) were calculated. Overall, pre-cooling has a moderate (d=0.73) effect on subsequent performance but the magnitude of the effect is dependent upon the nature of the test. Sprint performance is impaired (d=-0.26) but intermittent performance and prolonged exercise are both improved following cooling (d=0.47 and d=1.91 respectively). Cooling during exercise also has a positive effect on performance and capacity (d=0.76). Improvements were observed in studies with and without cooling-induced physiological alterations and the literature supports the suggestion of a dose-response relationship between cooling, thermal strain and improvements in performance and capacity. In summary, pre-cooling can improve subsequent intermittent and prolonged exercise performance and capacity in a hot environment but sprint performance is impaired. Efficient AUC Optimization for Information Ranking Applications
Adequate evaluation of an information retrieval system to estimate future
performance is a crucial task. Area under the ROC curve (AUC) is widely used to
evaluate the generalization of a retrieval system. However, the objective
function optimized in many retrieval systems is the error rate and not the AUC
value. This paper provides an efficient and effective non-linear approach to
optimize AUC using additive regression trees, with a special emphasis on the
use of multi-class AUC (MAUC) because multiple relevance levels are widely used
in many ranking applications. Compared to a conventional linear approach, the
performance of the non-linear approach is comparable on binary-relevance
benchmark datasets and is better on multi-relevance benchmark datasets.Comment: 12 page
Deflection and frequency monitoring of the Forth Road Bridge, Scotland, by GPS

Copyright © 2012 Thomas Telford Ltd.The use of carrier phase kinematic GPS (global positioning system) has evolved into a reliable technique to measure both the three-dimensional magnitudes and frequencies of movements of structures. Techniques have been developed that tackle errors caused by multipath, tropospheric delay and issues relating to satellite geometry. GPS-derived movements compare well with data from both design predictions and structural models. Results from field trials carried out on the Forth Road Bridge are presented. This paper brings together key results that outline the procedure as well as a series of new data that indicate other potential applications. GPS data were collected continuously over a period of 46 h at a minimum rate of 10 Hz. During the trials wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity and temperature were also recorded. Frequently there was very heavy traffic flow, and at one point a special load (a 100-t lorry) passed over simultaneously to the heavy daytime flow of traffic. Data from a planned load trial during a brief bridge closure are reported and compared with the limited results available from a finite element model. Measured vibration frequencies are also computed from GPS data and compared with those given in the literature. In addition, results indicating the change in structural characteristics are also presented – in particular changes of mass associated with changes in traffic loading are observed. The results show the performance of GPS as it has developed in recent years, and that it can now reliably be used as a significant part of structural health monitoring schemes, giving both the magnitude of quasi-static deflections in known time periods and hence the frequency of dynamic movements of structures.Forth Estuary Transport Authorit
The effect of aging, obesity and diabetes on foot health and its association with current and future footwear technologies
Changes in foot health trends are beginning to demand significant changes to foot health provision globally, for which appropriate provision to retail and health services is key. With the right input to innovation and design, footwear can help keep us fit and active and contribute to our overall wellbeing, creating exciting opportunities for the footwear market. Likewise, the development of orthotic materials, designs and manufacturing processes is enabling more complex solutions to equally complex developing foot conditions. There are three key issues driving the demand for specific footcare; the global increase in the number of people with diabetes, those who are obese and the fact we are all living longer. The populations of diabetic, elderly and obese adults require specific footcare solutions to meet the specific characteristics of their foot health issues such as wider-fit footwear and pressure relieving orthotic materials. Characteristics of these populations' feet relating to their morphology, tissue characteristics, vascular supply and sensation impact on their requirements from footwear. Additional characteristics relating to their overall health such as excess mass and instability additionally impact on the wear on the loading of the footwear and design features which may be beneficial
A qualitative exploration of whether lesbian and bisexual women are 'protected' from sociocultural pressure to be thin
Heterosexual women in Western cultures are known to experience body image concerns, dieting and disordered eating as a result of intense social pressures to be thin. However, it is theorised that lesbian and bisexual women belong to a subculture that is ‘protective’ of such demands. Fifteen non-heterosexual women were interviewed about their experiences of social pressure. Thematic analysis of their accounts suggests that such theorising may be inaccurate, because these lesbian and bisexual women did not feel ‘protected’ from social pressures and experienced body dissatisfaction. While they might attempt to resist thin idealisation, resistance is not centred around their sexuality
