Reviewing media literacy intervention studies for validity
This study is an examination of validity in published articles that have provided tests of the effectiveness of media literacy interventions. We identified 88 published tests of media literacy interventions then analyzed their content using five coding variables that indicated the degree to which authors of those studies established basic validity. We first conducted a meaning analysis to identify the definitions that authors of those studies presented for media literacy. Then we used those definitions to determine the extent to which those authors provided a complete (content validity) and accurate (face validity) operationalization in the design of their measures
Statistical Methodology for Optimal Sensor Locations for Damage Detection in Structures
A Bayesian statistical methodology
is presented for optimally locating the sensors
in a structure for the purpose of extracting the most
information about the model parameters which can
be used in model updating and in damage detection
and localization. This statistical approach properly
handles the unavoidable uncertainties in the measured
data as well as the uncertainties in the mathematical
model used to represent the structural behavior.
The optimality criterion for the sensor locations
is based on information entropy which is a
measure of the uncertainty in the model parameters.
The uncertainty in these parameters is computed
by the Bayesian statistical methodology and
then the entropy measure is minimized over the set
of possible sensor configurations using a genetic algorithm.
Results presented illustrate how both the
minimum entropy of the parameters and the optimal
sensor configuration depend on the location of
sensors, number of sensors, number and type of contributing
modes and the structural parameterization
(substructuring) scheme used
Behind the painting by A.C. Littleton in Shanghai
On June 2, 2015, I was given a tour of the China Accounting Museum (opened in November 2013) at the Lixin School of Accounting in Shanghai. In its International Hall, I came face to face with an oil painting by A.C. Littleton, “my” Littleton. Perhaps in a breach of protocol, I requested my host, Professor Song Xiaoming, to take the painting down from the wall to verify the authenticity of my claim. “There is a word ‘Wood’ on the backside,” I told him. He obliged: sure enough, inscribed in pencil were the words “after Robert Wood”. I explained that Littleton painted by the number, i.e. following numbered instructions, and therefore did not want to sign his own name. They seemed as surprised as I was, for the painting was donated by Pro-fessor Qu Xiaohui of Xiamen University. Following is the story behind the painting being at the museum
As NICSPs e a Contabilidade Governamental de Países em Desenvolvimento
With the purpose of reaching ambitious socioeconomic goals, developing countries need to evolve their institutional capacity in the public sector to establish and implement public policies, which, on their turn, prescind a reform in its government accounting. The social value of reform in government accounting lies, therefore, in its contribution to the development goals, including decrease of poverty. This grounding has lead international and multilateral donors and funders to endorse the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) and its compliance by developing countries. The emphasis on ensuring financial integrity and the change to the accrual accounting can make the IPSAS more useful in reforming the public accounting in developing countries. Mutant huntingtin enhances activation of dendritic Kv4 K+ channels in striatal spiny projection neurons
Huntington\u27s disease (HD) is initially characterized by an inability to suppress unwanted movements, a deficit attributable to impaired synaptic activation of striatal indirect pathway spiny projection neurons (iSPNs). To better understand the mechanisms underlying this deficit, striatal neurons in ex vivo brain slices from mouse genetic models of HD were studied using electrophysiological, optical and biochemical approaches. Distal dendrites of iSPNs from symptomatic HD mice were hypoexcitable, a change that was attributable to increased association of dendritic Kv4 potassium channels with auxiliary KChIP subunits. This association was negatively modulated by TrkB receptor signaling. Dendritic excitability of HD iSPNs was rescued by knocking-down expression of Kv4 channels, by disrupting KChIP binding, by restoring TrkB receptor signaling or by lowering mutant-Htt (mHtt) levels with a zinc finger protein. Collectively, these studies demonstrate that mHtt induces reversible alterations in the dendritic excitability of iSPNs that could contribute to the motor symptoms of HD
Performance Measures Using Electronic Health Records: Five Case Studies
Presents the experiences of five provider organizations in developing, testing, and implementing four types of electronic quality-of-care indicators based on EHR data. Discusses challenges, and compares results with those from traditional indicators
Meson Decay Constants from Isospin Mass Splittings in the Quark Model
Decay constants of and mesons are estimated within the framework of a
heavy-quark approach using measured isospin mass splittings in the , ,
and states to isolate the electromagnetic hyperfine interaction between
quarks. The values MeV and MeV are
obtained. Only experimental errors are given; possible theoretical ambiguities,
and suggestions for reducing them, are noted.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, EFI-92-3
