Changes in Optical Conductivity due to Readjustments in Electronic Density of States
Within the model of elastic impurity scattering, we study how changes in the
energy dependence of the electronic density of states (EDOS)
around the Fermi energy are reflected in the frequency-dependent
optical conductivity . While conserving the total number of
states in we compute the induced changes in as a
function of and in the corresponding optical scattering rate
. These quantities mirror some aspects of the EDOS
changes but the relationship is not direct. Conservation of optical oscillator
strength is found not to hold, and there is no sum rule on the optical
scattering rate although one does hold for the quasiparticle scattering.
Temperature as well as increases in impurity scattering lead to additional
changes in optical properties not seen in the constant EDOS case. These effects
have their origin in an averaging of the EDOS around the Fermi energy
on an energy scale set by the impurity scattering.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
A Simple Shell Model for Quantum Dots in a Tilted Magnetic Field
A model for quantum dots is proposed, in which the motion of a few electrons
in a three-dimensional harmonic oscillator potential under the influence of a
homogeneous magnetic field of arbitrary direction is studied. The spectrum and
the wave functions are obtained by solving the classical problem. The ground
state of the Fermi-system is obtained by minimizing the total energy with
regard to the confining frequencies. From this a dependence of the equilibrium
shape of the quantum dot on the electron number, the magnetic field parameters

Electronic Transport in a Three-dimensional Network of 1-D Bismuth Quantum Wires
The resistance R of a high density network of 6 nm diameter Bi wires in
porous Vycor glass is studied in order to observe its expected semiconductor
behavior. R increases from 300 K down to 0.3 K. Below 4 K, where R varies
approximately as ln(1/T), the order-of-magnitude of the resistance rise, as
well as the behavior of the magnetoresistance are consistent with localization
and electron-electron interaction theories of a one-dimensional disordered
conductor in the presence of strong spin-orbit scattering. We show that this
behaviour and the surface-enhanced carrier density may mask the proposed
semimetal-to-semiconductor transition for quantum Bi wires.Comment: 19 pages total, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Short-term outcome of 1,465 computer-navigated primary total knee replacements 2005â2008: A report from the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register
Background and purpose: Improvement of positioning and alignment by the use of computer-assisted surgery (CAS) might improve longevity and function in total knee replacements, but there is little evidence. In this study, we evaluated the short-term results of computer-navigated knee replacements based on data from the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register. Patients and methods: Primary total knee replacements without patella resurfacing, reported to the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register during the years 2005â2008, were evaluated. The 5 most common implants and the 3 most common navigation systems were selected. Cemented, uncemented, and hybrid knees were included. With the risk of revision for any cause as the primary endpoint and intraoperative complications and operating time as secondary outcomes, 1,465 computer-navigated knee replacements (CAS) and 8,214 conventionally operated knee replacements (CON) were compared. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox regression analysis with adjustment for age, sex, prosthesis brand, fixation method, previous knee surgery, preoperative diagnosis, and ASA category were used. Results: Kaplan-Meier estimated survival at 2 years was 98% (95% CI: 97.5â98.3) in the CON group and 96% (95% CI: 95.0â 97.8) in the CAS group. The adjusted Cox regression analysis showed a higher risk of revision in the CAS group (RR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1â2.5; p = 0.02). The LCS Complete knee had a higher risk of revision with CAS than with CON (RR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.3â3.4; p = 0.004)). The differences were not statistically significant for the other prosthesis brands. Mean operating time was 15 min longer in the CAS group. Interpretation: With the introduction of computer-navigated knee replacement surgery in Norway, the short-term risk of revision has increased for computer-navigated replacement with the LCS Complete. The mechanisms of failure of these implantations should be explored in greater depth, and in this study we have not been able to draw conclusions regarding causation
Next-generation sequencing with a myeloid gene panel in core-binding factor AML showed KIT activation loop and TET2 mutations predictive of outcome
Clinical outcome and mutations of 96 core-binding factor acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients 18-60 years old were examined. Complete remission (CR) after induction was 94.6%. There was no significant difference in CR, leukemia-free-survival (LFS) and overall survival (OS) between t(8;21) (N=67) and inv(16) patients (N=29). Univariate analysis showed hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at CR1 as the only clinical parameter associated with superior LFS. Next-generation sequencing based on a myeloid gene panel was performed in 72 patients. Mutations in genes involved in cell signaling were associated with inferior LFS and OS, whereas those in genes involved in DNA methylation were associated with inferior LFS. KIT activation loop (AL) mutations occurred in 25 patients, and were associated with inferior LFS (P=0.003) and OS (P=0.001). TET2 mutations occurred in 8 patients, and were associated with significantly shorter LFS (P=0.015) but not OS. Patients negative for KIT-AL and TET2 mutations (N=41) had significantly better LFS (P<0.001) and OS (P=0.012) than those positive for both or either mutation. Multivariate analysis showed that KIT-AL and TET2 mutations were associated with inferior LFS, whereas age â©Ÿ40 years and marrow blast â©Ÿ70% were associated with inferior OS. These observations provide new insights that may guide better treatment for this AML subtype.published_or_final_versio
Incidence and predictors of treatment-related mortality in paediatric acute leukaemia in El Salvador
Survival rates among children with leukaemia in low-income countries are lower than those in high-income countries. This has been attributed in part to higher treatment-related mortality (TRM). We examined the demographics, treatment, and outcomes of paediatric patients in El Salvador with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) or acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) to determine the incidence, causes, and risk factors for TRM. Two trained data managers collected data prospectively; no patients were excluded. Biological, socioeconomic and nutritional predictors were examined. A total of 469 patients with ALL and 78 patients with AML were included. The 2-year cumulative incidence of TRM was significantly higher among children with AML (35.4±6.4%) than those with ALL (12.5±1.7%; P<0.0001). However, the proportion of deaths attributable to the toxicity of treatment did not differ significantly between AML (25/47, 53.2%) and ALL (55/107, 51.4%; P=0.98). Among children with ALL, low monthly income (P=0.04) and low parental education (P=0.02) significantly increased the risk of TRM. Among children with AML, biological, socioeconomic, and nutritional variables were not associated with TRM. In this low-income country, toxic death significantly contributes to mortality in both ALL and AML. A better understanding of the effect of socioeconomic status on TRM may suggest specific strategies for patients with ALL
A unified approach to Poisson-Hopf deformations of Lie-Hamilton systems based on sl(2)
ProducciĂłn CientĂficaBased on a recently developed procedure to construct Poisson-Hopf deformations of LieâHamilton systems, a novel unified approach to nonequivalent deformations of LieâHamilton systems on the real plane with a VessiotâGuldberg Lie algebra isomorphic to sl(2) is proposed. This, in particular, allows us to define a notion of PoissonâHopf systems in dependence of a
parameterized family of Poisson algebra representations. Such an approach is explicitly illustrated by applying it to the three non-diffeomorphic classes of sl(2) LieâHamilton systems. Our results cover deformations of the Ermakov system, MilneâPinney, KummerâSchwarz and several Riccati equations as well as of the harmonic oscillator (all of them with t-dependent coefficients). Furthermore t-independent constants of motion are given as well. Our methods can be employed to generate other LieâHamilton systems and their deformations for other VessiotâGuldberg Lie algebras and their deformations
