Metabolic syndrome and idiopathic sudden sensori-neural hearing loss
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between the presence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) and the impact of MetS on recovery of patients with ISSHL. 39 Patients with ISSHL and 44 controls were enrolled in this study. Demographic, clinical characteristics and hearing recovery were evaluated. MetS was defined according to the diagnostic criteria of International Diabetes Federation (IDF) consensus definition. Patients affected by ISSHL presented a body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist hip ratio (WHR), fasting glucose and blood pressure significantly higher compared to controls. Considering patients with central obesity, 5 controls and 15 ISSHL patients met the criteria of MetS. According to Siegel criteria, a complete or partial recovery was observed in 60% of patients with MetS and in 91,66% of patients without MetS. MetS was associated with ISSHL and this association negatively influenced the hearing recovery of these patients

The article investigates the discursive construction of a Turkish Cypriot national
identity by the newspapers in North Cyprus. It questions the representation and
reconstruction processes of national identity within the press and examines the
various practices employed to mobilize readers around certain national imaginings.
Using Critical Discourse Analysis, the article analyses news reports of the opening of
border crossings in Cyprus in 2003, based on their content, the strategies used in the
production of national identity and the linguistic means employed in the process. In this
way, the nationalist tendencies embedded in news discourses, as well as discriminatory
and exclusive practices, are sought out
Exploratory Structural Investigation of a Hawkmoth-Inspired MAV’s Thorax
Manduca Sexta present excellent flight performances which make this insect an ideal candidate for bio-inspired engineered micro air vehicles. The actual insect presents an energetically very efficient thorax-wing flight system which needs to be fully understood for an effective design of artificial flying machines. This work discusses a preliminary finite element model which simulates the thorax-wing system and the muscles involved in the flapping motion. Both upstroke and downstroke conditions are statically analyzed with the application of load sets that simulate the contractions of the dorso-ventral and dorso-longitudinal muscles (indirect flight). Comparison with commercial software and experimental results is also presented and discussed
Folic acid-functionalized graphene oxide nanosheets via plasma etching as a platform to combine NIR anticancer phototherapy and targeted drug delivery
PEGylated graphene oxide (GO) has shown potential as NIR converting agent to produce local heat useful in breast cancer therapy, since its suitable photothermal conversion, high stability in physiological fluids, biocompatibility and huge specific surface. GO is an appealing nanomaterial for potential clinical applications combining drug delivery and photothermal therapy in a single nano-device capable of specifically targeting breast cancer cells. However, native GO sheets have large dimensions (0.5-5 mu m) such that tumor accumulation after a systemic administration is usually precluded. Herein, we report a step-by-step synthesis of folic acid-functionalized PEGylated GO, henceforth named GO-PEG-Fol, with small size and narrow size distribution (similar to 30 +/- 5 nm), and the ability of efficiently converting NIR light into heat. GO-PEG-Fol consists of a nano-GO sheet, obtained by fragmentation of GO by means of non-equilibrium plasma etching, fully functionalized with folic acid-terminated PEG(2000) chains through amidic coupling and azide-alkyne click cycloaddition, which we showed as active targeting agents to selectively recognize breast cancer cells such as MCF7 and MDA-MB-231. The GO-PEG-Fol incorporated a high amount of doxorubicin hydrochloride (Doxo) (> 33%) and behaves as NIR-light-activated heater capable of triggering sudden Doxo delivery inside cancer cells and localized hyperthermia, thus provoking efficient breast cancer death. The cytotoxic effect was found to be selective for breast cancer cells, being the IC50 up to 12 times lower than that observed for healthy fibroblasts. This work established plasma etching as a cost-effective strategy to get functionalized nano-GO with a smart combination of properties such as small size, good photothermal efficiency and targeted cytotoxic effect, which make it a promising candidate as photothermal agent for the treatment of breast cancer
Changes over time in HIV testing and counselling uptake and associated factors among youth in Zambia: a cross-sectional analysis of demographic and health surveys from 2007 to 2018
Introduction:
Zambia is among the countries with the highest HIV burden and where youth remain disproportionally affected. Access to HIV testing and counselling (HTC) is a crucial step to ensure the reduction of HIV transmission. This study examines the changes that occurred between 2007 and 2018 in access to HTC, inequities in testing uptake, and determinants of HTC uptake among youth.
Methods:
We carried out repeated cross-sectional analyses using three Zambian Demographic and Health Surveys (2007, 2013–14, and 2018). We calculated the percentage of women and men ages 15–24 years old who were tested for HIV in the last 12 months. We analysed inequity in HTC coverage using indicators of absolute inequality. We performed bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to identify predictors of HTC uptake in the last 12 months.
Results:
HIV testing uptake increased between 2007 and 2018, from 45 to 92% among pregnant women, 10 to 58% among non-pregnant women, and from 10 to 49% among men. By 2018 roughly 60% of youth tested in the past 12 months used a government health centre. Mobile clinics were the second most common source reaching up to 32% among adolescent boys by 2018. Multivariate analysis conducted among men and non-pregnant women showed higher odds of testing among 20–24 year-olds than adolescents (aOR = 1.55 [95%CI:1.30–1.84], among men; and aOR = 1.74 [1.40–2.15] among women). Among men, being circumcised (aOR = 1.57 [1.32–1.88]) and in a union (aOR = 2.44 [1.83–3.25]) were associated with increased odds of testing. For women greater odds of testing were associated with higher levels of education (aOR = 6.97 [2.82–17.19]). Education-based inequity was considerably widened among women than men by 2018.
Conclusion:
HTC uptake among Zambian youth improved considerably by 2018 and reached 65 and 49% tested in the last 12 months for women and men, respectively. However, achieving the goal of 95% envisioned by 2020 will require sustaining the success gained through government health centres, and scaling up the community-led approaches that have proven acceptable and effective in reaching young men and adolescent girls who are less easy to reach through the government facilities
Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of PE film by anatase/γ-MnO2
The photocatalytic degradation of low-density polyethylene (PE) films containing nanoparticles (NP) of titanium and manganese dioxides has been investigated. Composite PE films were prepared by the casting of p-xylene with the photocatalyst (TiO2, MnO2 or hybrid 1: 1 TiO2&MnO2) content of 1 wt%. The polyethylene degradation test has been carried out in a photoreactor with UV-irradiation (Hg lamp). Then, FTIR spectroscopy and gravimetric measurements have been conducted after the UV exposure at variable time to evaluate the NPs photocatalytic effects within the PE matrix. According to these tests, we detected the coupling effects of TiO2 and MnO2 nanoparticles on the PE photo-degradation. Moreover, the influence of TiO2 and TiO2&MnO2 on the tensile properties, thermal behavior under inert atmosphere and wettability characteristics of PE based films have been explored by DMA, TGA and water contact angle measurements, respectively. Prevalence of aac(6')-Ib-cr plasmid-mediated and chromosome-encoded fluoroquinolone resistance in Enterobacteriaceae in Italy
The spread of aac(6')-Ib-cr plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance determinants was evaluated in 197 enterobacterial isolates recovered in an Italian teaching hospital. The aac(6')-Ib-cr gene was found exclusively in Escherichia coli strains. The gene was located on a plasmid which presented additional ESBL genes. Most of the clinical strains were clonally related and displayed three point mutations at the topoisomerase level which conferred high resistance to fluoroquinolones
New ATCA, ALMA and VISIR observations of the candidate LBV SK-67266 (S61): the nebular mass from modelling 3D density distributions
We present new observations of the nebula around the Magellanic candidate
Luminous Blue Variable S61. These comprise high-resolution data acquired with
the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Atacama Large
Millimetre/Submillimetre Array (ALMA), and VISIR at the Very Large Telescope
(VLT). The nebula was detected only in the radio, up to 17 GHz. The 17 GHz ATCA
map, with 0.8 arcsec resolution, allowed a morphological comparison with the
H Hubble Space Telescope image. The radio nebula resembles a spherical
shell, as in the optical. The spectral index map indicates that the radio
emission is due to free-free transitions in the ionised, optically thin gas,
but there are hints of inhomogeneities. We present our new public code RHOCUBE
to model 3D density distributions, and determine via Bayesian inference the
nebula's geometric parameters. We applied the code to model the electron
density distribution in the S61 nebula. We found that different distributions
fit the data, but all of them converge to the same ionised mass, ~0.1 , which is an order of magnitude smaller than previous estimates. We
show how the nebula models can be used to derive the mass-loss history with
high-temporal resolution. The nebula was probably formed through stellar winds,
rather than eruptions. From the ALMA and VISIR non-detections, plus the derived
extinction map, we deduce that the infrared emission observed by space
telescopes must arise from extended, diffuse dust within the ionised region.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. Authors list corrected. In press in MNRAS.

The polarization mode of the auroral radio emission from the early-type star HD142301
We report the detection of the auroral radio emission from the early-type
magnetic star HD142301. New VLA observations of HD142301 detected highly
polarized amplified emission occurring at fixed stellar orientations. The
coherent emission mechanism responsible for the stellar auroral radio emission
amplifies the radiation within a narrow beam, making the star where this
phenomenon occurs similar to a radio lighthouse. The elementary emission
process responsible for the auroral radiation mainly amplifies one of the two
magneto-ionic modes of the electromagnetic wave. This explains why the auroral
pulses are highly circularly polarized. The auroral radio emission of HD142301
is characterized by a reversal of the sense of polarization as the star
rotates. The effective magnetic field curve of HD142301 is also available
making it possible to correlate the transition from the left to the right-hand
circular polarization sense (and vice-versa) of the auroral pulses with the
known orientation of the stellar magnetic field. The results presented in this
letter have implications for the estimation of the dominant magneto-ionic mode
