Heavy Mineral Variability And Provenance Of The Virginia Inner Shelf And Lower Chesapeake Bay
The mineral composition of the 3- to 4-phi (0.125 to 0.063 mm) size fraction of 49 surficial grab samples,located north and south of the entrance to Chesapeake Bay and of 38 surficial samples, located in the bay mouth, was determined during this study. Although up to 17 minerals were identified, principal components analysis indicated that seven minerals accounted for 96 percent of the composition variance in the bay samples. By using Q-mode factor analysis, three mineral composition end-members (factors) were selected from the sample data and provided an adequate description of the spatial variation in heavy-mineral composition. Heavy Mineral Concentrations In Sediments Of The Virginia Inner Continental Shelf
The Virginia Division of Mineral Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science investigated the occurrence of heavy minerals in the offshore sediments of Virginia. We began the project because earlier reconnaissance studies reported high heavy-mineral concentrations from several samples collected off the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Our work confirms the previously reported mineral values and locates additional high concentrations up to 20 nautical miles offshore. Furthermore, we show that potentially economic mineral values are not restricted no surficial sediments, but also are found in the upper 15 to 20 feet of inner continental shelf sediments. Several core samples indicate that potential economic values of heavy minerals are clustered offshore of Hog Island, Smith Island, Virginia Beach, and False Cape. These areas are likely targets for resource assessment studies of heavy minerals and construction or beach nourishment sand. Preliminary assessment of beaches and offshore sand resources of St. Eustatius, Netherlands Antilles : a report to the Government of St. Eustatius
Objectives: A pilot study was undertaken in July 1988 to: 1. Provide an estimate of the location and size of offshore sand resources suitable for beach nourishment. 2. Perform beach surveys and associated sampling for determining beach equilibrium configurations. 3. Provide a preliminary assessment of sites suitable for beach enhancement. 4. Provide a preliminary assessment of areas having extraordinary environmental sensitivity. Emphasis was given.to Oranje Baai and adjoining regions
Precision measurements of Linear Scattering Density using Muon Tomography
We demonstrate that muon tomography can be used to precisely measure the
properties of various materials. The materials which have been considered have
been extracted from an experimental blast furnace, including carbon (coke) and
iron oxides, for which measurements of the linear scattering density relative
to the mass density have been performed with an absolute precision of 10%. We
report the procedures that are used in order to obtain such precision, and a
discussion is presented to address the expected performance of the technique
when applied to heavier materials. The results we obtain do not depend on the
specific type of material considered and therefore they can be extended to any

Immunohistochemical analysis of cytoskeleton and ubiquitin in cerebellum of poisoned cattle by Solanum bonariense
El Solanum bonariense L., es un arbusto perenne, autóctono en Uruguay, Argentina y sur de Brasil. Al ser ingerido por los bovinos en pastoreo, les ocasiona una degeneración cortical cerebelosa, afectando específicamente a las células de Purkinje. Estas presentan el pericario extensamente vacuolado con desplazamiento del núcleo, con progresiva muerte neuronal. En los axones de estas neuronas se observa presencia de esferoides axonales en la sustancia blanca cerebelosa, que finalmente son sustituidos por microcavitaciones en la sustancia blanca. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue describir el patrón de inmunoreactividad contra diferentes elementos del citoesqueleto y la ubiquitina conjugada a proteínas marcadas para degradarse dentro de las células de Purkinje de cerebelos de bovinos intoxicados natural o experimentalmente por ingestión de Solanum bonariense L.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria
Building climate resilience through nature-based solutions in Europe: A review of enabling knowledge, finance and governance frameworks
The European Union (EU) has firmly positioned itself as a global leader in promoting and implementing nature-based solutions (NBS). The recently released EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change, and Forest Strategy - all representing key pillars of the ambitious European Green Deal (EGD) - rely on NBS to both preserve and restore ecosystem integrity and increase climate resilience. Although research and policy in Europe have advanced the conceptualization and operationalization of NBS, a much wider adoption is needed to reach the ambitious goals of the EGD and fulfil its vision of transforming into a sustainable, climate-neutral, climate resilient, fair, and prosperous EU by 2050. In this paper, we review recent EU-supported research, policy, and practices to identify critical dimensions that still need to be addressed for greater uptake of NBS. While recognising the multiple societal challenges NBS can target, we build on the key messages from the ‘5th European Climate Change Adaptation conference ECCA 2021′ and focus our analysis on NBS for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. We screen a wide range of NBS cases across the EU and identify-three core challenges to implementation: the lack of a comprehensive evidence base on the effectiveness of NBS to address targeted challenges; the need for a greater involvement of the private sector in financing NBS; and opportunities for enhancing stakeholder engagement in the successful design and implementation of NBS. We take these challenges as the starting point for a broader reflection and critical discussion on the role of i) knowledge, i) finance, including investments in NBS and divestments from nature-negative projects, and iii) governance and policy frameworks to enable the uptake of NBS. We conclude by identifying options for the EU to foster the uptake of NBS in research, policy and practice
Imaging of the Inner Zone of Blast Furnaces Using MuonRadiography: The BLEMAB Project
The aim of the BLEMAB project (BLast furnace stack density Estimation through online Muons ABsorption measurements) is the application of muon radiography techniques, to image a blast furnace’s inner zone. In particular, the goal of the study is to characterize the geometry and size of the so-called “cohesive zone”, i.e., the spatial region where the slowly downward-moving material begins to soften and melt, which plays such an important role in the performance of the blast furnace itself. Thanks to the high penetration power of natural cosmic-ray muon radiation, muon transmission radiography could be an appropriate non invasive methodology for the imaging of large high-density structures such as a blast furnace, whose linear dimensions can be up to a few tens of meters. A state-of-the-art muon tracking system is currently in development and will be installed at a blast furnace on the ArcelorMittal site in Bremen (Germany), where it will collect data for a period of various months. expectations based on preliminary simulations are presented and briefly discussed
The BLEMAB European project: Muon radiography as an imaging tool in the industrial field
The European project called BLEMAB (BLast furnace stack density Estimation through on-line Muons ABsorption measurements), provides for the application of the muon radiography technique in the industrial environment. The project represents a non-invasive way of monitoring a blast furnace and in particular aims to study the geometric and density development of the so-called “cohesive zone”, which is important for the performance of the blast furnace itself. The installation of the detectors is expected in 2022 at the ArcelorMittal site in Bremen (Germany).
