Biodiversity in the city: key challenges for urban green space management
Cities play important roles in the conservation of global biodiversity, particularly through the planning and management of urban green spaces (UGS). However, UGS management is subject to a complex assortment of interacting social, cultural, and economic factors, including governance, economics, social networks, multiple stakeholders, individual preferences, and social constraints. To help deliver more effective conservation outcomes in cities, we identify major challenges to managing biodiversity in UGS and important topics warranting further investigation. Biodiversity within UGS must be managed at multiple scales while accounting for various socioeconomic and cultural influences. Although the environmental consequences of management activities to enhance urban biodiversity are now beginning to be addressed, additional research and practical management strategies must be developed to balance human needs and perceptions while maintaining ecological processes
An Integrative Design Framework for New Service Development
Service innovation is focused on customer value creation. At its core, customer-centric service innovation in an increasingly digital world is technology-enabled, human-centered, and process-oriented. This requires a cross-disciplinary, holistic approach to new service design and development (NSD). This paper proposes a new service strategy-aligned integrative design framework for NSD. It correlates the underlying theories and principles of disparate but interrelated aspects of service design thinking: service strategy, concept, design, experience and architecture into a coherent framework for NSD, consistent with the service brand value. Application of the framework to NSD is envisioned to be iterative and holistic, accentuated on continuous organizational and customer learning. The preliminary framework's efficacy is illustrated using a simplified telecom case example. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014
Service Interaction Flow Analysis Technique for Service Personalization
Abstract
Service interaction flows are difficult to capture, analyze, outline, and represent for research and design purposes. We examine how variation of personalized service flows in technology-mediated service interaction can be modeled and analyzed to provide information on how service personalization could support interaction. We have analyzed service interaction cases in a context of technology-mediated car rental service. With the analysis technique we propose, inspired by Interaction Analysis method, we were able to capture and model the situational service interaction. Our contribution regarding technology-mediated service interaction design is twofold: First, with the increased understanding on the role of personalization in managing variation in technology-mediated service interaction, our study contributes to designing service management information systems and human-computer interfaces that support personalized service interaction flows. Second, we provide a new analysis technique for situated interaction analysis, particularly when the aim is to understand personalization in service interaction flows
Female Sex Worker Social Networks and STI/HIV Prevention in South China
Reducing harm associated with selling and purchasing sex is an important public health priority in China, yet there are few examples of sustainable, successful programs to promote sexual health among female sex workers. The limited civil society and scope of nongovernmental organizations circumscribe the local capacity of female sex workers to collectively organize, advocate for their rights, and implement STI/HIV prevention programs. The purpose of this study was to examine social networks among low-income female sex workers in South China to determine their potential for sexual health promotion.Semi-structured interviews with 34 low-income female sex workers and 28 health outreach members were used to examine how social relationships affected condom use and negotiation, STI/HIV testing and health-seeking behaviors, and dealing with violent clients. These data suggested that sex worker's laoxiang (hometown social connections) were more powerful than relationships between women selling sex at the same venue in establishing the terms and risk of commercial sex. Female sex workers from the same hometown often migrated to the city with their laoxiang and these social connections fulfilled many of the functions of nongovernmental organizations, including collective mobilization, condom promotion, violence mitigation, and promotion of health-seeking behaviors. Outreach members observed that sex workers accompanied by their laoxiang were often more willing to accept STI/HIV testing and trust local sexual health services.Organizing STI/HIV prevention services around an explicitly defined laoxiang social network may provide a strong foundation for sex worker health programs. Further research on dyadic interpersonal relationships between female sex workers, group dynamics and norm establishment, and the social network characteristics are needed
Defining the Sister Rat Mammary Tumor Cell Lines HH-16 cl.2/1 and HH-16.cl.4 as an In Vitro Cell Model for Erbb2
Cancer cell lines have been shown to be reliable tools in genetic studies of breast cancer, and the characterization of these lines indicates that they are good models for studying the biological mechanisms underlying this disease. Here, we describe the molecular cytogenetic/genetic characterization of two sister rat mammary tumor cell lines, HH-16 cl.2/1 and HH-16.cl.4, for the first time. Molecular cytogenetic analysis using rat and mouse chromosome paint probes and BAC/PAC clones allowed the characterization of clonal chromosome rearrangements; moreover, this strategy assisted in revealing detected breakpoint regions and complex chromosome rearrangements. This comprehensive cytogenetic analysis revealed an increase in the number of copies of the Mycn and Erbb2 genes in the investigated cell lines. To analyze its possible correlation with expression changes, relative RNA expression was assessed by real-time reverse transcription quantitative PCR and RNA FISH. Erbb2 was found to be overexpressed in HH-16.cl.4, but not in the sister cell line HH-16 cl.2/1, even though these lines share the same initial genetic environment. Moreover, the relative expression of Erbb2 decreased after global genome demethylation in the HH-16.cl.4 cell line. As these cell lines are commercially available and have been used in previous studies, the present detailed characterization improves their value as an in vitro cell model. We believe that the development of appropriate in vitro cell models for breast cancer is of crucial importance for revealing the genetic and cellular pathways underlying this neoplasy and for employing them as experimental tools to assist in the generation of new biotherapies
Coastal Upwelling Supplies Oxygen-Depleted Water to the Columbia River Estuary
Low dissolved oxygen (DO) is a common feature of many estuarine and shallow-water
environments, and is often attributed to anthropogenic nutrient enrichment from
terrestrial-fluvial pathways. However, recent events in the U.S. Pacific
Northwest have highlighted that wind-forced upwelling can cause naturally
occurring low DO water to move onto the continental shelf, leading to
mortalities of benthic fish and invertebrates. Coastal estuaries in the Pacific
Northwest are strongly linked to ocean forcings, and here we report observations
on the spatial and temporal patterns of oxygen concentration in the Columbia
River estuary. Hydrographic measurements were made from transect (spatial
survey) or anchor station (temporal survey) deployments over a variety of wind
stresses and tidal states during the upwelling seasons of 2006 through 2008.
During this period, biologically stressful levels of dissolved oxygen were
observed to enter the Columbia River estuary from oceanic sources, with minimum
values close to the hypoxic threshold of 2.0 mg L−1. Riverine
water was consistently normoxic. Upwelling wind stress controlled the timing and
magnitude of low DO events, while tidal-modulated estuarine circulation patterns
influenced the spatial extent and duration of exposure to low DO water. Strong
upwelling during neap tides produced the largest impact on the estuary. The
observed oxygen concentrations likely had deleterious behavioral and
physiological consequences for migrating juvenile salmon and benthic crabs.
Based on a wind-forced supply mechanism, low DO events are probably common to
the Columbia River and other regional estuaries and if conditions on the shelf
deteriorate further, as observations and models predict, Pacific Northwest
estuarine habitats could experience a decrease in environmental quality
