Catecholborane Reductions of Ditosylhydrozones to the Corresponding Methylene Derivatives
The smooth deoxygenation of diketones via the Catecholborane reduction of the corresponding ditosylhydrzaones is described. The reductions occur under mild conditions and are suitable for sensitive compounds

Nonergodic Behavior of Interacting Bosons in Harmonic Traps
We study the time evolution of a system of interacting bosons in a harmonic
trap. In the low-energy regime, the quantum system is not ergodic and displays
rather large fluctuations of the ground state occupation number. In the high
energy regime of classical physics we find nonergodic behavior for modest
numbers of trapped particles. We give two conditions that assure the ergodic
behavior of the quantum system even below the condensation temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 3 PS-figures, uses psfig.st
Topological geon black holes in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory
We construct topological geon quotients of two families of
Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes. For Kuenzle's static, spherically symmetric
SU(n) black holes with n>2, a geon quotient exists but generically requires
promoting charge conjugation into a gauge symmetry. For Kleihaus and Kunz's
static, axially symmetric SU(2) black holes a geon quotient exists without
gauging charge conjugation, and the parity of the gauge field winding number
determines whether the geon gauge bundle is trivial. The geon's gauge bundle
structure is expected to have an imprint in the Hawking-Unruh effect for

Physics in the Real Universe: Time and Spacetime
The Block Universe idea, representing spacetime as a fixed whole, suggests
the flow of time is an illusion: the entire universe just is, with no special
meaning attached to the present time. This view is however based on
time-reversible microphysical laws and does not represent macro-physical
behaviour and the development of emergent complex systems, including life,
which do indeed exist in the real universe. When these are taken into account,
the unchanging block universe view of spacetime is best replaced by an evolving
block universe which extends as time evolves, with the potential of the future
continually becoming the certainty of the past. However this time evolution is
not related to any preferred surfaces in spacetime; rather it is associated

Three-Dimensional Adult Cardiac Extracellular Matrix Promotes Maturation of Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes
Pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs) have great potential in the development of new therapies for cardiovascular disease. In particular, human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) may prove especially advantageous due to their pluripotency, their self-renewal potential, and their ability to create patient-specific cell lines. Unfortunately, pluripotent stem cell-derived CMs are immature, with characteristics more closely resembling fetal CMs than adult CMs, and this immaturity has limited their use in drug screening and cell-based therapies. Extracellular matrix (ECM) influences cellular behavior and maturation, as does the geometry of the environment—twodimensional (2D) versus three-dimensional (3D). We therefore tested the hypothesis that native cardiac ECM and 3D cultures might enhance the maturation of iPSC-derived CMs in vitro. We demonstrate that maturation of iPSCderived CMs was enhanced when cells were seeded into a 3D cardiac ECM scaffold, compared with 2D culture. 3D cardiac ECMpromoted increased expression of calcium-handling genes, Junctin, CaV1.2, NCX1, HCN4, SERCA2a, Triadin, and CASQ2. Consistent with this, we find that iPSC-derived CMs in 3D adult cardiac ECM show increased calcium signaling (amplitude) and kinetics (maximum upstroke and downstroke) compared with cells in 2D. Cells in 3D culture were also more responsive to caffeine, likely reflecting an increased availability of calcium in the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Taken together, these studies provide novel strategies for maturing iPSC-derived CMs that may have applications in drug screening and transplantation therapies to treat heart disease
Pulsar kicks from a dark-matter sterile neutrino
We show that a sterile neutrino with mass in the 1-20 keV range and a small
mixing with the electron neutrino can simultaneously explain the origin of the
pulsar motions and the dark matter in the universe. An asymmetric neutrino
emission from a hot nascent neutron star can be the explanation of the observed
pulsar velocities. In addition to the pulsar kick mechanism based on resonant
neutrino transitions, we point out a new possibility: an asymmetric
off-resonant emission of sterile neutrinos. The two cases correspond to
different values of the masses and mixing angles. In both cases we identify the
ranges of parameters consistent with the pulsar kick, as well as cosmological

The subject of heavy flavour decays as probes for physics beyond the TeV
scale is covered from the experimental perspective. Emphasis is placed on the
more traditional Beyond the Standard Model topics that have potential for
impact in the short term, with the physics explained. We do unabashedly promote
