    Is the Sun Embedded in a Typical Interstellar Cloud?

    The physical properties and kinematics of the partially ionized interstellar material near the Sun are typical of warm diffuse clouds in the solar vicinity. The interstellar magnetic field at the heliosphere and the kinematics of nearby clouds are naturally explained in terms of the S1 superbubble shell. The interstellar radiation field at the Sun appears to be harder than the field ionizing ambient diffuse gas, which may be a consequence of the low opacity of the tiny cloud surrounding the heliosphere.     Self-Consistency and Calibration of Cluster Number Count Surveys for Dark Energy

    Cluster number counts offer sensitive probes of the dark energy if and only if the_evolution_ of the cluster mass versus observable relation(s) is well calibrated. We investigate the potential for internal calibration by demanding consistency in the counts as a function of the observable. In the context of a constant dark energy equation of state, known initial fluctuation amplitude expected from the CMB, universal underlying mass function, and an idealized selection, we find that the ambiguity from the normalization of the mass-observable relationships, or an extrapolation of external mass-observable determinations from higher masses, can be largely eliminated with a sufficiently deep survey, even allowing for an arbitrary evolution. More generally, number counts as a function of both the redshift and the observable enable strong consistency tests on assumptions made in modelling the mass-observable relations and cosmology.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRD rapid communication

    UV and EUV Instruments

    We describe telescopes and instruments that were developed and used for astronomical research in the ultraviolet (UV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelength ranges covered by these bands are not uniquely defined. We use the following convention here: The EUV and UV span the regions ~100-912 and 912-3000 Angstroem respectively. The limitation between both ranges is a natural choice, because the hydrogen Lyman absorption edge is located at 912 Angstroem. At smaller wavelengths, astronomical sources are strongly absorbed by the interstellar medium. It also marks a technical limit, because telescopes and instruments are of different design. In the EUV range, the technology is strongly related to that utilized in X-ray astronomy, while in the UV range the instruments in many cases have their roots in optical astronomy.     A Kinematically Complete Measurement of the Proton Structure Function F2 in the Resonance Region and Evaluation of Its Moments

    We measured the inclusive electron-proton cross section in the nucleon resonance region (W < 2.5 GeV) at momentum transfers Q**2 below 4.5 (GeV/c)**2 with the CLAS detector. The large acceptance of CLAS allowed for the first time the measurement of the cross section in a large, contiguous two-dimensional range of Q**2 and x, making it possible to perform an integration of the data at fixed Q**2 over the whole significant x-interval. From these data we extracted the structure function F2 and, by including other world data, we studied the Q**2 evolution of its moments, Mn(Q**2), in order to estimate higher twist contributions. The small statistical and systematic uncertainties of the CLAS data allow a precise extraction of the higher twists and demand significant improvements in theoretical predictions for a meaningful comparison with new experimental results.Comment: revtex4 18 pp., 12 figure

    Measuring the metric: a parametrized post-Friedmanian approach to the cosmic dark energy problem

    We argue for a ``parametrized post-Friedmanian'' approach to linear cosmology, where the history of expansion and perturbation growth is measured without assuming that the Einstein Field Equations hold. As an illustration, a model-independent analysis of 92 type Ia supernovae demonstrates that the curve giving the expansion history has the wrong shape to be explained without some form of dark energy or modified gravity. We discuss how upcoming lensing, galaxy clustering, cosmic microwave background and Lyman alpha forest observations can be combined to pursue this program, which generalizes the quest for a dark energy equation of state, and forecast the accuracy that the proposed SNAP satellite can attain.Comment: Replaced to match accepted PRD version.     Updated Nucleosynthesis Constraints on Unstable Relic Particles

    We revisit the upper limits on the abundance of unstable massive relic particles provided by the success of Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis calculations. We use the cosmic microwave background data to constrain the baryon-to-photon ratio, and incorporate an extensively updated compilation of cross sections into a new calculation of the network of reactions induced by electromagnetic showers that create and destroy the light elements deuterium, he3, he4, li6 and li7. We derive analytic approximations that complement and check the full numerical calculations. Considerations of the abundances of he4 and li6 exclude exceptional regions of parameter space that would otherwise have been permitted by deuterium alone. We illustrate our results by applying them to massive gravitinos. If they weigh ~100 GeV, their primordial abundance should have been below about 10^{-13} of the total entropy. This would imply an upper limit on the reheating temperature of a few times 10^7 GeV, which could be a potential difficulty for some models of inflation.     Tensor Polarization of the phi meson Photoproduced at High t

    As part of a measurement of the cross section of ϕ\phi meson photoproduction to high momentum transfer, we measured the polar angular decay distribution of the outgoing K+K^+ in the channel ϕ→K+K−\phi \to K^+K^- in the ϕ\phi center-of-mass frame (the helicity frame). We find that s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) holds in the kinematical range where tt-channel exchange dominates (up to −t∌2.5-t \sim 2.5 GeV2^2 for EÎłE_{\gamma}=3.6 GeV). Above this momentum, uu-channel production of a ϕ\phi meson dominates and induces a violation of SCHC. The deduced value of the ϕNN\phi NN coupling constant lies in the upper range of previously reported values.Comment: 6 pages; 5 figure

    Exclusive ρ0\rho^0 meson electroproduction from hydrogen at CLAS

    The longitudinal and transverse components of the cross section for the ep→eâ€Čpρ0e p\to e^\prime p \rho^0 reaction were measured in Hall B at Jefferson Laboratory using the CLAS detector. The data were taken with a 4.247 GeV electron beam and were analyzed in a range of xBx_B from 0.2 to 0.6 and of Q2Q^2 from 1.5 to 3.0 GeV2^2. The data are compared to a Regge model based on effective hadronic degrees of freedom and to a calculation based on Generalized Parton Distributions. It is found that the transverse part of the cross section is well described by the former approach while the longitudinal part can be reproduced by the latter.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
