    The impacts of surface conditions on the vapor-liquid-solid growth of germanium nanowires on Si (100) substrate

    The impacts of surface conditions on the growth of Ge nanowires on a Si (100) substrate are discussed in detail. On SiO2-terminated Si substrates, high-density Ge nanowires can be easily grown. However, on H-terminated Si substrates, growing Ge nanowires is more complex. The silicon migration and the formation of a native SiO2 overlayer on a catalyst surface retard the growth of Ge nanowires. After removing this overlayer in the HF solution, high-density and well-ordered Ge nanowires are grown. Ge nanowires cross vertically and form two sets of parallel nanowires. It is found that nanowires grew along ?110? direction

    Darboux transformations for a twisted derivation and quasideterminant solutions to the super KdV equation

    This paper is concerned with a generalized type of Darboux transformations defined in terms of a twisted derivation DD satisfying D(AB)=D(A)+σ(A)BD(AB)=D(A)+\sigma(A)B where σ\sigma is a homomorphism. Such twisted derivations include regular derivations, difference and qq-difference operators and superderivatives as special cases. Remarkably, the formulae for the iteration of Darboux transformations are identical with those in the standard case of a regular derivation and are expressed in terms of quasideterminants. As an example, we revisit the Darboux transformations for the Manin-Radul super KdV equation, studied in Q.P. Liu and M. Ma\~nas, Physics Letters B \textbf{396} 133--140, (1997). The new approach we take enables us to derive a unified expression for solution formulae in terms of quasideterminants, covering all cases at once, rather than using several subcases. Then, by using a known relationship between quasideterminants and superdeterminants, we obtain expressions for these solutions as ratios of superdeterminants. This coincides with the results of Liu and Ma\~nas in all the cases they considered but also deals with the one subcase in which they did not obtain such an expression. Finally, we obtain another type of quasideterminant solutions to the Main-Radul super KdV equation constructed from its binary Darboux transformations. These can also be expressed as ratios of superdeterminants and are a substantial generalization of the solutions constructed using binary Darboux transformations in earlier work on this topic

    Elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions near the balance energy

    The proton elliptic flow in collisions of Ca on Ca at energies from 30 to 100 MeV/nucleon is studied in an isospin-dependent transport model. With increasing incident energy, the elliptic flow shows a transition from positive to negative flow. Its magnitude depends on both the nuclear equation of state (EOS) and the nucleon-nucleon scattering cross section. Different elliptic flows are obtained for a stiff EOS with free nucleon-nucleon cross sections and a soft EOS with reduced nucleon-nucleon cross sections, although both lead to vanishing in-plane transverse flow at the same balance energy. The study of both in-plane and elliptic flows at intermediate energies thus provides a means to extract simultaneously the information on the nuclear equation of state and the nucleon-nucleon scattering cross section in medium.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    Ratcheting Heat Flux against a Thermal Bias

    Merely rocking the temperature in one heat bath can direct a steady heat flux from cold to hot against a non-zero thermal bias in stylized nonlinear lattice junctions that are sandwiched between two heat baths. Likewise, for an average zero-temperature difference between the two contacts a net, ratchet-like heat flux emerges. Computer simulations show that this very heat flux can be controlled and reversed by suitably tailoring the frequency (\lesssim 100 MHz) of the alternating temperature field.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    Correlations of chaotic eigenfunctions: a semiclassical analysis

    We derive a semiclassical expression for an energy smoothed autocorrelation function defined on a group of eigenstates of the Schr\"odinger equation. The system we considered is an energy-conserved Hamiltonian system possessing time-invariant symmetry. The energy smoothed autocorrelation function is expressed as a sum of three terms. The first one is analogous to Berry's conjecture, which is a Bessel function of the zeroth order. The second and the third terms are trace formulae made from special trajectories. The second term is found to be direction dependent in the case of spacing averaging, which agrees qualitatively with previous numerical observations in high-lying eigenstates of a chaotic billiard.Comment: Revtex, 13 pages, 1 postscript figur

    Effective video multicast over wireless internet

    With the rapid growth of wireless networks and great success of Internet video, wireless video services are expected to be widely deployed in the near future. As different types of wireless networks are converging into all IP networks, i.e., the Internet, it is important to study video delivery over the wireless Internet. This paper proposes a novel end-system based adaptation protocol calledWireless Hybrid Adaptation Layered Multicast (WHALM) protocol for layered video multicast over wireless Internet. In WHALM the sender dynamically collects bandwidth distribution from the receivers and uses an optimal layer rate allocation mechanism to reduce the mismatches between the coarse-grained layer subscription levels and the heterogeneous and dynamic rate requirements from the receivers, thus maximizing the degree of satisfaction of all the receivers in a multicast session. Based on sampling theory and theory of probability, we reduce the required number of bandwidth feedbacks to a reasonable degree and use a scalable feedback mechanism to control the feedback process practically. WHALM is also tuned to perform well in wireless networks by integrating an end-to-end loss differentiation algorithm (LDA) to differentiate error losses from congestion losses at the receiver side. With a series of simulation experiments over NS platform, WHALM has been proved to be able to greatly improve the degree of satisfaction of all the receivers while avoiding congestion collapse on the wireless Internet

    Directed flow of neutral strange particles at AGS

    Directed flow of neutral strange particles in heavy ion collisions at AGS is studied in the ART transport model. Using a lambda mean-field potential which is 2/3 of that for a nucleon as predicted by the constituent quark model, lambdas are found to flow with protons but with a smaller flow parameter as observed in experiments. For kaons, their repulsive potential, which is calculated from the impulse approximation using the measured kaon-nucleon scattering length, leads to a smaller anti-flow than that shown in the preliminary E895 data. Implications of this discrepancy are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
