Where is the warm H2 ? A search for H2 emission from disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars
Mid-IR emission lines of H2 are useful probes to determine the mass of warm
gas present in the surface layers of disks. Numerous observations of Herbig
Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) have been performed, but only 2 detections of mid-IR H2
toward HD97048 and AB Aur have been reported. We aim at tracing the warm gas in
the disks of 5 HAeBes with gas-rich environments and physical characteristics
close to those of AB Aur and HD97048, to discuss whether the detections toward
these 2 objects are suggestive of peculiar conditions for the gas. We search
for the H2 S(1) emission line at 17.035 \mu\m with VISIR, and complemented by
CH molecule observations with UVES. We gather the H2 measurements from the
literature to put the new results in context and search for a correlation with
some disk properties. None of the 5 VISIR targets shows evidence for H2
emission. From the 3sigma upper limits on the integrated line fluxes we
constrain the amount of optically thin warm gas to be less than 1.4 M_Jup in
the disk surface layers. There are now 20 HAeBes observed with VISIR and TEXES
instruments to search for warm H2, but only two detections (HD97048 and AB Aur)
were made so far. We find that the two stars with detected warm H2 show at the
same time high 30/13 \mu\m flux ratios and large PAH line fluxes at 8.6 and
11.3 \mu\m compared to the bulk of observed HAeBes and have emission CO lines
detected at 4.7 \mu\m. We detect the CH 4300.3A absorption line toward both
HD97048 and AB Aur with UVES. The CH to H2 abundance ratios that this would
imply if it were to arise from the same component as well as the radial
velocity of the CH lines both suggest that CH arises from a surrounding
envelope, while the detected H2 would reside in the disk. The two detections of
the S(1) line in the disks of HD97048 and AB Aur suggest either peculiar
physical conditions or a particular stage of evolution.Comment: accepted for publication in A&A : 10 pages, 6 figure
Molecular hydrogen in the disk of the Herbig Ae star HD97048
We present high-resolution spectroscopic mid-infrared observations of the
circumstellar disk around the Herbig Ae star HD97048 obtained with the VLT
Imager and Spectrometer for the mid-InfraRed (VISIR). We conducted observations
of mid-infrared pure rotational lines of molecular hydrogen (H2) as a tracer of
warm gas in the disk surface layers. In a previous paper, we reported the
detection of the S(1) pure rotational line of H2 at 17.035 microns and argued
it is arising from the inner regions of the disk around the star. We used VISIR
on the VLT for a more comprehensive study based on complementary observations
of the other mid-infrared molecular transitions, namely S(2) and S(4) at 12.278
microns and 8.025 microns respectively, to investigate the physical properties
of the molecular gas in the circumstellar disk around HD97048. We do not detect
neither the S(2) line nor the S(4) H2 line from the disk of HD97048, but we
derive upper limits on the integrated line fluxes which allows us to estimate
an upper limit on the gas excitation temperature, T_ex < 570 K. This limit on
the temperature is consistent with the assumptions previously used in the
analysis of the S(1) line, and allows us to set stronger contraints on the mass
of warm gas in the inner regions of the disk. Indeed, we estimate the mass of
warm gas to be lower than 0.1 M_Jup. We also discuss the probable physical
mechanisms which could be responsible of the excitation of H2 in the disk of

Back Reaction of Hawking Radiation on Black Hole Geometry
We propose a model for the geometry of a dynamical spherical shell in which
the metric is asymptotically Schwarzschild, but deviates from Ricci-flatness in
a finite neighbourhood of the shell. Hence, the geometry corresponds to a
`hairy' black hole, with the hair originating on the shell. The metric is
regular for an infalling shell, but it bifurcates, leading to two disconnected
Schwarzschild-like spacetime geometries. The shell is interpreted as either
collapsing matter or as Hawking radiation, depending on whether or not the
shell is infalling or outgoing. In this model, the Hawking radiation results
from tunnelling between the two geometries. Using this model, the back reaction

Lead in the marine environment: concentrations and effects on invertebrates
Lead (Pb) is a non-essential metal naturally present in the environment and often complexed with other elements (e.g., copper, selenium, zinc). This metal has been used since ancient Egypt and its extraction has grown in the last centuries. It has been used until recently as a fuel additive and is currently used in the production of vehicle batteries, paint, and plumbing. Marine ecosystems are sinks of terrestrial contaminations; consequently, lead is detected in oceans and seas. Furthermore, lead is not biodegradable. It remains in soil, atmosphere, and water inducing multiple negative impacts on marine invertebrates (key species in trophic chain) disturbing ecological ecosystems. This review established our knowledge on lead accumulation and its effects on marine invertebrates (Annelida, Cnidaria, Crustacea, Echinodermata, and Mollusca). Lead may affect different stages of development from fertilization to larval development and can also lead to disturbance in reproduction and mortality. Furthermore, we discussed changes in the seawater chemistry due to Ocean Acidification, which can affect the solubility, speciation, and distribution of the lead, increasing potentially its toxicity to marine invertebrates
The VLT/NaCo Large program to probe the occurrence of exoplanets and brown dwarfs in wide orbits: I- Sample definition and characterization
Young, nearby stars are ideal targets to search for planets using the direct
imaging technique. The determination of stellar parameters is crucial for the
interpretation of imaging survey results particularly since the luminosity of
substellar objects has a strong dependence on system age. We have conducted a
large program with NaCo at the VLT in order to search for planets and brown
dwarfs in wide orbits around 86 stars. A large fraction of the targets observed
with NaCo were poorly investigated in the literature. We performed a study to
characterize the fundamental properties (age, distance, mass) of the stars in
our sample. To improve target age determinations, we compiled and analyzed a
complete set of age diagnostics. We measured spectroscopic parameters and age
diagnostics using dedicated observations acquired with FEROS and CORALIE
spectrographs at La Silla Observatory. We also made extensive use of archival
spectroscopic data and results available in the literature. Additionally, we
exploited photometric time-series, available in ASAS and Super-WASP archives,
to derive rotation period for a large fraction of our program stars. We
provided updated characterization of all the targets observed in the VLT NaCo
Large program, a survey designed to probe the occurrence of exoplanets and
brown dwarfs in wide orbits. The median distance and age of our program stars
are 64 pc and 100 Myr, respectively. Nearly all the stars have masses between
0.70 and 1.50sun, with a median value of 1.01 Msun. The typical metallicity is
close to solar, with a dispersion that is smaller than that of samples usually
observed in radial velocity surveys. Several stars are confirmed or proposed
here to be members of nearby young moving groups. Eight spectroscopic binaries

Normal human breast xenografts activate N-nitrosodimethylamine: identification of potential target cells for an environmental nitrosamine.
Normal human breast tissue maintained as xenografts in female Balb/c (nu/nu) athymic mice is capable of metabolising N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) to active intermediates that will react with DNA. Administration of NDMA to mice with slow-release implants of 17 beta-oestradiol which provide human physiological (luteal phase) circulating oestrogen levels and increase cell proliferation in the xenograft (Laidlaw et al., 1992), leads to an apparent increase in the extent of reaction with DNA compared to controls without oestrogen implants. In mice with oestrogen implants, measurements of the amounts of the promutagenic lesion, O6-methyl-2'-deoxyguanosine formed in DNA clearly indicated a dose related increase in the extent of reaction. Detection of O6-methyl-2'-deoxyguanosine using immunohistochemical procedures revealed that the nuclei of cells of the glandular epithelium, supportive tissue and adipose tissue, in decreasing order of prevalence, were positively stained for the presence of this DNA lesion. Epithelial cells, which are the putative target cells for carcinogenesis in the breast, are therefore prone to promutagenic damage as a result of exposure to an environmental nitrosamine
Identity work and the `unemployed' worker: age, disability and the lived experience of the older unemployed
This article seeks to explore how older individuals negotiate and manage their self-identity in relation to work while situated without paid employment. After reviewing the current positions of the older unemployed in the UK, noting the substantial overlap between age and disability, we turn our attention to conceptualizing the lived experiences of individuals through exploring `identity work' as a means of understanding a non-working work identity. Based upon focus group interviews, our empirical analysis focuses on key dimensions of participants' identity practice and how they sought to manage the following social processes: imposed identities; crafting working identities; and contesting unfavourable working identities.The conclusion contextualizes the findings against a backdrop of increasing individualistic discourses underpinning approaches to employability, closes with the policy implications arising from this study, and makes suggestions for future research agendas. </jats:p
Magnétotribologie des contacts glissants ferromagnétiques
Les contacts glissants des couples de matériaux ferromagnétique/ferromagnétique sont largement influencés par la présence d'un champ magnétique dans la zone du tribocontact. L'oxydation des surfaces fraîches cisaillées aux jonctions de contact est activée par l'application du champ magnétique. Cette activation est induite par les forts gradients magnétiques au niveau des jonctions et des phénomènes d'induction engendrés par la variation temporelle et cyclique du champ magnétique à travers les jonctions de contact qui se renouvellent continuellement dans le contact. Les essais expérimentaux montrent que l'application du champ magnétique favorise notamment la formation des oxydes ferromagnétiques pour préserver le passage magnétique à travers le contact et le taux des spins positifs. Dans cette étude nous présenterons les résultats tribologiques et la morphologie des surfaces usées de contact ferromagnétique/ferromagnétique à l'air libre ou bien sous vide poussé 10-5 Pa avec ou sans champ magnétique autour du contact pour comparer la phénoménologie observée. Puis nous discuterons les processus magnétiques et physico chimiques mis en jeu dans le contact glissant magnétisé
Thinking about Later Life: Insights from the Capability Approach
A major criticism of mainstream gerontological frameworks is the inability of such frameworks to appreciate and incorporate issues of diversity and difference in engaging with experiences of aging. Given the prevailing socially structured nature of inequalities, such differences matter greatly in shaping experiences, as well as social constructions, of aging. I argue that Amartya Sen’s capability approach (2009) potentially offers gerontological scholars a broad conceptual framework that places at its core consideration of human beings (their values) and centrality of human diversity. As well as identifying these key features of the capability approach, I discuss and demonstrate their relevance to thinking about old age and aging. I maintain that in the context of complex and emerging identities in later life that shape and are shaped by shifting people-place and people-people relationships, Sen’s capability approach offers significant possibilities for gerontological research
Reduction of artefacts caused by hip implants in CT-based attenuation-corrected PET images using 2-D interpolation of a virtual sinogram on an irregular grid
Metallic prosthetic replacements, such as hip or knee implants, are known to cause strong streaking artefacts in CT images. These artefacts likely induce over- or underestimation of the activity concentration near the metallic implants when applying CT-based attenuation correction of positron emission tomography (PET) images. Since this degrades the diagnostic quality of the images, metal artefact reduction (MAR) prior to attenuation correction is required
