Fluid-solid transition in hard hyper-sphere systems
In this work we present a numerical study, based on molecular dynamics
simulations, to estimate the freezing point of hard spheres and hypersphere
systems in dimension D = 4, 5, 6 and 7. We have studied the changes of the
Radial Distribution Function (RDF) as a function of density in the coexistence
region. We started our simulations from crystalline states with densities above
the melting point, and moved down to densities in the liquid state below the
freezing point. For all the examined dimensions (including D = 3) it was
observed that the height of the first minimum of the RDF changes in an almost
continuous way around the freezing density and resembles a second order phase
transition. With these results we propose a numerical method to estimate the
freezing point as a function of the dimension D using numerical fits and
semiempirical approaches. We find that the estimated values of the freezing
point are very close to previously reported values from simulations and
theoretical approaches up to D = 6 reinforcing the validity of the proposed
method. This was also applied to numerical simulations for D = 7 giving new
estimations of the freezing point for this dimensionality.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
Sweetened beverages, snacks and overweight: findings from the Young Lives cohort study in Peru
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between consumption of snacks and sweetened beverages and risk of overweight among children. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of the Young Lives cohort study in Peru. SETTING: Twenty sentinel sites from a total of 1818 districts available in Peru. SUBJECTS: Children in the younger cohort of the Young Lives study in Peru, specifically those included in the third (2009) and the fourth (2013) rounds. RESULTS: A total of 1813 children were evaluated at baseline; 49·2 % girls and mean age 8·0 (sd 0·3) years. At baseline, 3·3 (95 % CI 2·5, 4·2) % reported daily sweetened beverage consumption, while this proportion was 3·9 (95 % CI 3·1, 4·9) % for snacks. Baseline prevalence of overweight was 22·0 (95 % CI 20·1, 23·9) %. Only 1414 children were followed for 4·0 (sd 0·1) years, with an overweight incidence of 3·6 (95 % CI 3·1, 4·1) per 100 person-years. In multivariable analysis, children who consumed sweetened beverages and snacks daily had an average weight increase of 2·29 (95 % CI 0·62, 3·96) and 2·04 (95 % CI 0·48, 3·60) kg more, respectively, than those who never consumed these products, in approximately 4 years of follow-up. Moreover, there was evidence of an association between daily consumption of sweetened beverages and risk of overweight (relative risk=2·12; 95 % CI 1·05, 4·28). CONCLUSIONS: Daily consumption of sweetened beverages and snacks was associated with increased weight gain v. never consuming these products; and in the case of sweetened beverages, with higher risk of developing overweight
Reproductive capacity of the red cusk-eel genypterus chilensis (Guichenot, 1848) in captivity
Indexación: Scopus.This work was supported by the FONDEF Project D06I 1024 “Development of technologies for the production of red cusk-eel fingerlings (Genypterus chilensis)”.Genypterus chilensis is a marine fish of high gastronomic demand, whose capture has declined in recent years due to overfishing. In the development of the farming technology, high mortalities were obtained during egg incubation. The objective of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of fecundity and eggs viability of G. chilensis in captivity. The spawns of G. chilensis were analyzed over a period of 2 years and 3 months. The total fecundity was estimated by counting the masses and eggs produced monthly throughout the period. The results confirm that G. chilensis is a partial spawner, since a female may more than two masses of eggs per day, due to a large amount of mass spawned per season (621 average). The total production of masses of the Farming Centre during the period was 2,290; of these, only 7% (166) corresponding to 15,330,517 eggs were incubated. Because of its high fecundity, G. chilensis produces numerous masses of eggs, of which only a small percentage reaches incubation, as well as it occurs in other marine fish. © 2018, Escuela de Ciencias del Mar. Spectral Measures of Bipartivity in Complex Networks
We introduce a quantitative measure of network bipartivity as a proportion of
even to total number of closed walks in the network. Spectral graph theory is
used to quantify how close to bipartite a network is and the extent to which
individual nodes and edges contribute to the global network bipartivity. It is
shown that the bipartivity characterizes the network structure and can be
related to the efficiency of semantic or communication networks, trophic
interactions in food webs, construction principles in metabolic networks, or

Diacritical study of light, electrons, and sound scattering by particles and holes
We discuss the differences and similarities in the interaction of scalar and
vector wave-fields with particles and holes. Analytical results are provided
for the transmission of isolated and arrayed small holes as well as surface
modes in hole arrays for light, electrons, and sound. In contrast to the
optical case, small-hole arrays in perforated perfect screens cannot produce
acoustic or electronic surface-bound states. However, unlike electrons and
light, sound is transmitted through individual holes approximately in
proportion to their area, regardless their size. We discuss these issues with a
systematic analysis that allows exploring both common properties and unique
behavior in wave phenomena for different material realizations.Comment: 3 figure
Developing a strawberry yogurt fortified with marine fish oil \u3csup\u3e1\u3c/sup\u3e
Fortified dairy products appeal to a wide variety of consumers and have the potential to increase sales in the yogurt industry and help increase intake of long-chain n-3 fatty acids. The objectives of this study were to develop a strawberry yogurt containing microencapsulated salmon oil (MSO; 2% wt/vol) and evaluate its characteristics during 1 mo of storage. Unpurified salmon oil (USO) was purified (PSO) and both USO and PSO were analyzed for peroxide value (PV), anisidine value (AV), total oxidation, free fatty acids (FFA), and moisture content. A stable emulsion was prepared with 7% PSO, 22% gum arabic, 11% maltodextrin, and 60% water. The emulsion was spray-dried to produce MSO. The MSO was added to strawberry-flavored yogurt (SYMSO) before pasteurization and homogenization, and a control (SY) without MSO was produced. Both yogurts were stored for 1 mo at 4°C and we determined the quality characteristics including acidity (pH), syneresis, thiobarbituric acid (TBA), fatty acid methyl ester composition, color, and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count. The entire experiment was replicated 3 times. Total oxidation (unitless) of USO, PSO, and MSO was calculated to be 20.7 ± 1.26, 10.9 ± 0.1, and 13.4 ± 0.25, respectively. Free fatty acid contents were 1.61 ± 0.19%, 0.59 ± 0.02%, and 0.77 ± 0.02% for USO, PSO, and MSO, respectively. Eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid were the predominant polyunsaturated fatty acids in MSO and in SYMSO, but neither was detected in SY. Fortification of SY with MSO had no significant effect on yogurt pH or syneresis. A decrease in concentration of lactic acid bacteria was observed during the storage of all yogurts. Thiobarbituric acid values significantly increased as storage time increased and SY had a significantly lighter (higher L *) and less yellow (lower b *) color than SYMSO. Although some slight differences were observed in the color and oxidation of SYMSO compared with SY, the study demonstrated that SY could be fortified with salmon oil. © 2011 American Dairy Science Association
Hadamard Regularization
Motivated by the problem of the dynamics of point-particles in high
post-Newtonian (e.g. 3PN) approximations of general relativity, we consider a
certain class of functions which are smooth except at some isolated points
around which they admit a power-like singular expansion. We review the concepts
of (i) Hadamard ``partie finie'' of such functions at the location of singular
points, (ii) the partie finie of their divergent integral. We present and
investigate different expressions, useful in applications, for the latter
partie finie. To each singular function, we associate a partie-finie (Pf)
pseudo-function. The multiplication of pseudo-functions is defined by the
ordinary (pointwise) product. We construct a delta-pseudo-function on the class
of singular functions, which reduces to the usual notion of Dirac distribution
when applied on smooth functions with compact support. We introduce and analyse
a new derivative operator acting on pseudo-functions, and generalizing, in this
context, the Schwartz distributional derivative. This operator is uniquely
defined up to an arbitrary numerical constant. Time derivatives and partial
derivatives with respect to the singular points are also investigated. In the
course of the paper, all the formulas needed in the application to the physical

Chirally symmetric quark description of low energy \pi-\pi scattering
Weinberg's theorem for \pi-\pi scattering, including the Adler zero at
threshold in the chiral limit, is analytically proved for microscopic quark
models that preserve chiral symmetry. Implementing Ward-Takahashi identities,
the isospin 0 and 2 scattering lengths are derived in exact agreement with
Weinberg's low energy results. Our proof applies to alternative quark
formulations including the Hamiltonian and Euclidean space Dyson-Schwinger
approaches. Finally, the threshold \pi-\pi scattering amplitudes are calculated
using the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the rainbow-ladder truncation,

Co-Inoculation of Plant-Growth-Promoting Bacteria Modulates Physiological and Biochemical Responses of Perennial Ryegrass to Water Deficit
Perennial ryegrass is a forage commonly used in temperate regions for livestock feeding; however, its yield is affected by reduced biomass production under water deficit. In a previous study, three co-inoculations of beneficial bacteria were selected based on their ability to promote plant
growth under reduced water availability. The aim of this work was to elucidate some mechanisms by which the selected bacteria can help improve the response of perennial ryegrass to water deficit. Ryegrass plants were inoculated with each of the co-inoculations (Herbaspirillum sp. AP02 Herbaspirillum sp. AP21; Herbaspirillum sp. AP02–Pseudomonas sp. N7; Herbaspirillum sp. AP21–Azospirillum brasilense
D7) and subjected to water deficit for 10 days. Physiological and biochemical measurements were taken 10 days after stress and shortly after rehydration. The results showed that bacteria had a positive effect on shoot biomass production, dissipation of excess energy, and proline and chlorophyll
pigments during the days of water deficit (p < 0.05). The leaf water status of the inoculated plants was 12% higher than that of the uninoculated control after rehydration. Two Herbaspirillum strains showed greater potential for use as biofertilizers that help ameliorate the effects of water deficit
