    Gate induced enhancement of spin-orbit coupling in dilute fluorinated graphene

    We analyze the origin of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in fluorinated graphene using Density Functional Theory (DFT) and a tight-binding model for the relevant orbitals. As it turns out, the dominant source of SOC is the atomic spin-orbit of fluorine adatoms and not the impurity induced SOC based on the distortion of the graphene plane as in hydrogenated graphene. More interestingly, our DFT calculations show that SOC is strongly affected by both the type and concentrations of the graphene's carriers, being enhanced by electron doping and reduced by hole doping. This effect is due to the charge transfer to the fluorine adatom and the consequent change in the fluorine-carbon bonding. Our simple tight-binding model, that includes the SOC of the 2p2p orbitals of F and effective parameters based on maximally localized Wannier functions, is able to account for the effect. The strong enhancement of the SOC induced by graphene doping opens the possibility to tune the spin relaxation in this material.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Diffusion of fluorine adatoms on doped graphene

    We calculate the diffusion barrier of fluorine adatoms on doped graphene in the diluted limit using Density Functional Theory. We found that the barrier Δ\Delta strongly depends on the magnitude and character of the graphene's doping (δn\delta n): it increases for hole doping (δn<0\delta n<0) and decreases for electron doping (δn>0\delta n>0). Near the neutrality point the functional dependence can be approximately by Δ=Δ0−α δn\Delta=\Delta_0-\alpha\, \delta n where α≃6×10−12\alpha\simeq6\times10^{-12} meVcm2^2. This effect leads to significant changes of the diffusion constant with doping even at room temperature and could also affect the low temperature diffusion dynamics due to the presence of substrate induced charge puddles. In addition, this might open up the possibility to engineer the F dynamics on graphene by using local gates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Internal Kinematics of Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies

    We describe the dynamical properties which may be inferred from HST/STIS spectroscopic observations of luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) between 0.1<z<0.7. While the sample is homogeneous in blue rest-frame color, small size and line-width, and high surface-brightness, their detailed morphology is eclectic. Here we determine the amplitude of rotation versus random, or disturbed motions of the ionized gas. This information affirms the accuracy of dynamical mass and M/L estimates from Keck integrated line-widths, and hence also the predictions of the photometric fading of these unusual galaxies.     Nearby Clumpy, Gas Rich, Star Forming Galaxies: Local Analogs of High Redshift Clumpy Galaxies

    Luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) have enhanced star formation rates and compact morphologies. We combine Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with HI data of 29 LCBGs at redshift z~0 to understand their nature. We find that local LCBGs have high atomic gas fractions (~50%) and star formation rates per stellar mass consistent with some high redshift star forming galaxies. Many local LCBGs also have clumpy morphologies, with clumps distributed across their disks. Although rare, these galaxies appear to be similar to the clumpy star forming galaxies commonly observed at z~1-3. Local LCBGs separate into three groups: 1. Interacting galaxies (~20%); 2. Clumpy spirals (~40%); 3. Non-clumpy, non-spirals with regular shapes and smaller effective radii and stellar masses (~40%). It seems that the method of building up a high gas fraction, which then triggers star formation, is not the same for all local LCBGs. This may lead to a dichotomy in galaxy characteristics. We consider possible gas delivery scenarios and suggest that clumpy spirals, preferentially located in clusters and with companions, are smoothly accreting gas from tidally disrupted companions and/or intracluster gas enriched by stripped satellites. Conversely, as non-clumpy galaxies are preferentially located in the field and tend to be isolated, we suggest clumpy, cold streams, which destroy galaxy disks and prevent clump formation, as a likely gas delivery mechanism for these systems.     On the Nature of the Strong Emission-Line Galaxies in Cluster Cl 0024+1654: Are Some the Progenitors of Low Mass Spheroidals?

    We present new size, line ratio, and velocity width measurements for six strong emission-line galaxies in the galaxy cluster, Cl 0024+1654, at redshift z~0.4. The velocity widths from Keck spectra are all narrow (30<sigma<120 km/s), with three profiles showing double peaks. Four galaxies have low masses (M<10^{10} Mo). Whereas three galaxies were previously reported to be possible AGNs, none exhibit AGN-like emission line ratios or velocity widths. Two or three appear as very blue spirals with the remainder more akin to luminous H-II galaxies undergoing a strong burst of star formation. We propose that after the burst subsides, these galaxies will transform into quiescent dwarfs, and are thus progenitors of some cluster spheroidals (We adopt the nomenclature suggested by Kormendy & Bender (1994), i.e., low-density, dwarf ellipsoidal galaxies like NGC 205 are called `spheroidals' instead of `dwarf ellipticals') seen today.Comment: 14 pages + 2 figures + 1 table, LaTeX, Acc. for publ. in ApJL also available at http://www.ucolick.org/~deep/papers/papers.htm

Los resultados muestran que las chicas eligen principalmente carreras de Humanidades, Ciencias Experimentales, Ciencias Sociales, Jurídicas y de la Salud y sus principales motivos de elección son porque les gusta, por vocación y para ayudar a otras personas, mientras que ellos se decantan por estudios técnicos para ganar un buen sueldo. Se discute la pertinencia de una orientación vocacional individualizada que garantice la igualdad de oportunidades

    Influencia de algunas variables fisicoquímicas sobre recubrimiento electroforético de hidroxiapatita sintética

    La deposición electroforética es un método alterno de poco uso para formar recubrimientos sobre sustratos conductores. En este trabajo se sintetizó hidroxiapatita( HA ) por dos métodos, los productos se caracterizaron por análisis químico, difracción de rayos X ( DRX ) espectroscopía infrarroja ( FTIR ) y se determinó su distribución de tamaño de partícula. Se determinó la curva de potencial zeta vs pH de la HA para proceder a trabajar sus suspensiones acuosas. Se determinó la influencia del gradiente de potencial, del tiempo transcurrido, de la corriente y de la fracción sólida de las suspensiónes en la masa de HA depositada electroforéticamente tanto en suspensión acuosa como suspendida en etanol absoluto. El depósito se caracterizó por DRX y microscopía electrónica de barrido ( MEB ). Se hallaron dos problemas que son la aglomeración y la formación de grietas en el secado. Se ensayaron algunas soluciones obteniéndose recubrimientos satisfactorios.Peer Reviewe

    We develop a formalism for the calculation of the flow of angular momentum carried by the fluctuating electromagnetic field within a cavity bounded by two flat anisotropic materials. By generalizing a procedure employed recently for the calculation of the Casimir force between arbitrary materials, we obtain an expression for the torque between anisotropic plates in terms of their reflection amplitude matrices.
