Genetic Algorithm for Epidemic Mitigation by Removing Relationships
Min-SEIS-Cluster is an optimization problem which aims at minimizing the
infection spreading in networks. In this problem, nodes can be susceptible to
an infection, exposed to an infection, or infectious. One of the main features
of this problem is the fact that nodes have different dynamics when interacting
with other nodes from the same community. Thus, the problem is characterized by
distinct probabilities of infecting nodes from both the same and from different
communities. This paper presents a new genetic algorithm that solves the
Min-SEIS-Cluster problem. This genetic algorithm surpassed the current
heuristic of this problem significantly, reducing the number of infected nodes
during the simulation of the epidemics. The results therefore suggest that our
new genetic algorithm is the state-of-the-art heuristic to solve this problem.Comment: GECCO '17 - Proceedings of the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation

An exploratory study of dispute resolution methods in the South African construction industry
This study assessed the dispute resolution methods used in the South African construction industry. Arbitration, adjudication and mediation are the most frequently used dispute resolution methods in the construction industry. A literature review focused on arbitration, adjudication and mediation in the construction industry. Closed-ended and open-ended questionnaires as well as interviews were conducted among the senior construction participants who included architects, quantity surveyors, construction managers, project managers and attorneys. The questionnaires were completed by 70 construction participants. The research concluded that for alternative dispute resolution (ADR) to be effective in solving disputes in the local construction industry, mediators, arbitrators and adjudicators with knowledge of the construction industry should be appointed. In terms of its characteristics, ADR should be the best option to resolve construction disputes. However, it is not being fully utilised due to the characteristics of dispute resolution itself and the absence of an appropriate framework to guide the disputing parties on the overall process. The literature review on the ADR developments and their effectiveness focused only on South Africa. This study provides a basis for using ADR effectively in the construction industry. The findings are of value for clients, contractors and consultants
An appraisal of housing satisfaction in South Africa low income housing scheme
Abstract: Post-occupancy evaluation techniques have been developed to provide a means for evaluating occupant responses to changes in an environment and linking this response to physical measures of that environment. POE has been used to evaluate the performance of buildings after they have been built and occupied for some time. This paper presents findings on the social and physical factors which influence residential satisfaction in four different government Housing Subsidy locations in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Data obtained from the occupant survey were analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics. Findings arising from the survey revealed that the respondents were satisfied with their overall housing situation, but had complaints about certain aspects of the housing unit. However, the respondents informed that most of their housing needs were not being met. Also, a comparison is also made of the perceived factors of dissatisfaction amongst the housing subsidy occupants. It is recommended that a wider systematic coverage of the subject through investigation and diagnostic POE and occupants’ need assessment should be carried out in housing subsidy schemes in South Africa
