How We Stopped Worrying about Cyber Doom and Started Collecting Data

    Get PDF
Moderate and measured takes on cyber security threats are swamped by the recent flood of research and policy positions in the cyber research field offering hyperbolic perspectives based on limited observations. This skewed perspective suggests constant cyber disasters that are confronting humanity constantly. The general tone of the debate argues that cyber war is already upon us and our future will only witness more cyber doom. However, these hyperbolic perspectives are being countered by empirical investigations that produce the opposite of what is to be expected. It is generally observed that limited cyber engagements throughout the geopolitical system are the dominant form of interaction. Our task here is to offer a different path forward. We first posit what can be known about cyber security interactions with data as well as what cannot. Where is the water’s edge in cyber security research? We then examine the known works in the field that utilize data and evidence to examine cyber security processes. Finally, we conclude with an offering of what types of studies need to be done in the future to move the field forward, away from the prognostication and generalizations so typical in the discourse in this constantly changing and growing field

Spatio-Temporal Distribution and Abundance of Phytoplankton in Manila Bay

Understanding the dynamics and production of phytoplankton may contribute to the elucidation of the status of fishery resources and may be the key for better fisheries management since phytoplankton is at the base of the food chain. The changes and succession of phytoplankton community structure in Manila Bay was studied by conducting hydrobiological survey every other month from January 2012 to November 2015. It was determined from this study that diatoms dominated the phytoplankton composition all throughout the survey period and the total phytoplankton density was generally highest during southwest monsoons. Dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria, on the other hand, were relatively most dense during tradewinds. Although causative species for harmful algal blooms and fish kills were present, only the bloom of red Noctiluca scintillans was observed in January 2014 albeit no harmful implication to consumers was reported. Phytoplankton typically converged in the coasts of the bay, particularly at the eastern portion, but it is noteworthy to say that the sporadic pattern seen maybe attributed to the presence of their predators. The dramatic drop in the phytoplankton densities seem to coincide with the spawning of Sardinella fimbriata and Sardinella gibbosa

Effectiveness of the flipped classroom methodology In the performance of higher education students: systematic review with meta-analysis

Introduction: The methodology Flipped Classroom (FC) consists in individual activities that the student has to do at home through the use of technologies which help the student to prepare for class, and during classes, activities are performed as more dynamic classes centered on the student. Through the years, the success has reached the maximum levels of performance and satisfaction in the teaching sessions in different areas of education compared to the classical methods, and there are no conclusive and considerable studies that compile and analyze this information succinctly. Objective: To analyze experimental and quasi-experimental studies that evaluate the methodology database in FC in performance and student satisfaction in comparison with the expository methodology. Methodology: This article is a systematic review that analyzes the randomized controlled trial (RCT) and Quasi-experimental studies selected with the methodology FC, which measures the efficacy through the results achieved in the realization and evaluation of the students. These articles were found in EBSCOhost and PubMed. Results: We selected 41 articles, that fulfilled all inclusion criteria established by the authors, for the accomplishment of this systematic review. Discussion: The results of our meta-analysis, both RCTs and quasi-experimental studies, point to a better effectiveness of the FC methodology compared to the expository methodology in academic performance. However, there is a heterogeneity in planned and developed activities during class, which means that our conclusions can’t be generalized. The poor methodological quality of the included studies, especially quasi-experimental studies, does not allow our conclusions about efficacy to be vigorous. Nevertheless, based on these first promising data, it seems to us that this methodology offers learning opportunities that aren’t possible in a classroom based on lectures and subject matter exposition. Conclusion: Although the articles selected have poor methodological quality, and it is necessary more rigorous investigations on this methodology, we believe that the FC methodology could revolutionize teaching methods and replace traditional teaching, which is so deeply rooted in today's society and doesn’t seems to favor the achievement of transversal competences.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

GROUND VALIDATION OF SATELLITE-BASED PRECIPITATION FOR FLOOD SIMULATION IN SOUTH-EAST ASIAN RIVER BASINS

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Flood simulation at basin scale can be enhanced by combining Satellite-Based Precipitation (SBP) with ground rain gauge measurements. The present study attempts to show feasible approaches in terms of time, space and pattern at selected basins in South East Asia. As for temporal downscaling it was possible to detect flood timing and magnitude with high temporal resolution at poorly gauged basins. This approach was tested at the upper part of the Huong in Vietnam and Ping River basins in Thailand respectively. Both catchments are located in steep, humid, and vegetated areas. Two SBPs were employed: the Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) MVK version and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 Ver. 6product. The results indicate that SBPs products tend to underestimate precipitation intensities, but they seem able to depict the spatial and temporal patterns. The evaluated SBPs at basin scale were found useful and river discharge simulation was enhanced with corrected SBPs. This approach might be applied at other basins not only in Asia region
