    PNEPs, NEPs for context free parsing: Application to natural language processing

We propose PNEP, a simple extension to NEP, and a procedure to translate a grammar into a PNEP that recognizes the same language. These parsers based on NEPs do not impose any additional constrain to the structure of the grammar, which can contain all kinds of recursive, lambda or ambiguous rules. This flexibility makes this procedure specially suited for Natural Languge Processing (NLP). In a first proof with a simplified English grammar, we got a performance (a linear time complexity) similar to that of the most popular syntactic parsers in the NLP area (Early and its derivatives).     Vortex states in 2D superconductor at high magnetic field in a periodic pinning potential

    The effect of a periodic pinning array on the vortex state in a 2D superconductor at low temperatures is studied within the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau approach. It is shown that attractive interaction of vortex cores to a commensurate pin lattice stabilizes vortex solid phases with long range positional order against violent shear fluctuations. Exploiting a simple analytical method, based on the Landau orbitals description, we derive a rather detailed picture of the low temperatures vortex state phase diagram. It is predicted that for sufficiently clean samples application of an artificial periodic pinning array would enable one to directly detect the intrinsic shear stiffness anisotropy characterizing the ideal vortex lattice.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    A Spectral Diagnostic for Density-Bounded HII Regions

    The existence of density-bounded HII regions in spiral galaxies is supported by means of a spectral indicator based on the intensity of the [OI]6300A forbidden line. A grid of photoionization models providing spectral information of density-bounded nebulae is presented in order to test the validity of our indicator. The indicator is applicable to typical observed HII regions with solar or higher metallicities, and for the range of ages observed in normal HII regions. When applying the diagnostic to a large sample of HII regions of spiral galaxies taken from the literature, we find that a fraction of the selected HII regions with emission detected in the [OI]6300A line turn out to be consistent with the predictions of density-bounded photoionization models. Preliminary estimates of the fraction of Lyman continuum photons escaping ranges from 20% to 40%. The number of density-bounded HII regions could be even larger after confirmation of those regions for which the [OI] line was not detected, provided they are good density-bounded candidates. We stress the importance of having combined information on both good measurements or reliable upper limits for the intensity of this line, and good determinations of the Halpha luminosity for complete samples of HII regions in galaxies in order to make proper estimations as to whether UV photons escaping from HII regions are the main source of ionization of the diffuse ionized medium in galaxies.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, LaTeX, accepted for publication in M.N.R.A.

    Zero temperature solutions of the Edwards-Anderson model in random Husimi Lattices

    We solve the Edwards-Anderson model (EA) in different Husimi lattices. We show that, at T=0, the structure of the solution space depends on the parity of the loop sizes. Husimi lattices with odd loop sizes have always a trivial paramagnetic solution stable under 1RSB perturbations while, in Husimi lattices with even loop sizes, this solution is absent. The range of stability under 1RSB perturbations of this and other RS solutions is computed analytically (when possible) or numerically. We compute the free-energy, the complexity and the ground state energy of different Husimi lattices at the level of the 1RSB approximation. We also show, when the fraction of ferromagnetic couplings increases, the existence, first, of a discontinuous transition from a paramagnetic to a spin glass phase and latter of a continuous transition from a spin glass to a ferromagnetic phase.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures (v3: Corrected analysis of transitions.     Boolean network model predicts cell cycle sequence of fission yeast

    A Boolean network model of the cell-cycle regulatory network of fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces Pombe) is constructed solely on the basis of the known biochemical interaction topology. Simulating the model in the computer, faithfully reproduces the known sequence of regulatory activity patterns along the cell cycle of the living cell. Contrary to existing differential equation models, no parameters enter the model except the structure of the regulatory circuitry. The dynamical properties of the model indicate that the biological dynamical sequence is robustly implemented in the regulatory network, with the biological stationary state G1 corresponding to the dominant attractor in state space, and with the biological regulatory sequence being a strongly attractive trajectory. Comparing the fission yeast cell-cycle model to a similar model of the corresponding network in S. cerevisiae, a remarkable difference in circuitry, as well as dynamics is observed. While the latter operates in a strongly damped mode, driven by external excitation, the S. pombe network represents an auto-excited system with external damping.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

    Retrospective cohort analysis of Spanish national trends of coronary artery bypass grafting and percutaneous coronary intervention from 1998 to 2017

    Introduction Spain is one of the countries with the lowest rates of revascularisation and highest ratio of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Objectives To investigate the changes and trends in the two revascularisation procedures between 1998 and 2017 in Spain. Design Retrospective cohort study. Analysis of in-hospital outcomes. Setting Minimum basic data set from the Spanish National Department of Health: mandatory database collecting information of patients who are attended in the Spanish public National Health System. Participants 603 976 patients who underwent isolated CABG or PCI in the Spanish National Health System. The study period was divided in four 5-year intervals. Patients with acute myocardial infarction on admission were excluded. Primary and secondary outcomes We investigated the volume of procedures nationwide, the changes of the risk profile of patients and in-hospital mortality of both techniques. Results We observed a 2.2-fold increase in the rate of any type of myocardial revascularisation per million inhabitants-year: 357 (1998) to 776 (2017). 93 682 (15.5%) had a coronary surgery. PCI to CABG ratio rose from 2.2 (1998-2002) to 8.1 (2013-2017). Charlson's index increased by 0.8 for CABG and 1 for PCI. The median annual volume of PCI/hospital augmented from 136 to 232, while the volume of CABG was reduced from 137 to 74. In the two decades, we detected a significant reduction of CABG in-hospital mortality (6.5% vs 2.6%, p<0.001) and a small increase in PCI (1.2% vs 1.5%, p<0.001). Risk adjusted mortality rate was reduced for both CABG (1.51 vs 0.48, p<0.001), and PCI (1.42 vs 1.05, p<0.001).     Magnetic properties of submicron Co islands and their use as artificial pinning centers

    We report on the magnetic properties of elongated submicron magnetic islands and their influence on a superconducting film. The magnetic properties were studied by magnetization hysteresis loop measurements and scanning-force microscopy. In the as-grown state, the islands have a magnetic structure consisting of two antiparallel domains. This stable domain configuration has been directly visualized as a 2x2-checkerboard pattern by magnetic-force microscopy. In the remanent state, after magnetic saturation along the easy axis, all islands have a single-domain structure with the magnetic moment oriented along the magnetizing field direction. Periodic lattices of these Co islands act as efficient artificial pinning arrays for the flux lines in a superconducting Pb film deposited on top of the Co islands. The influence of the magnetic state of the dots on their pinning efficiency is investigated in these films, before and after the Co dots are magnetized.Comment: 6 pages including figure

    Young stellar clusters and associations in M33

    We analyse multi-wavelength observations of 32 young star clusters and associations in M33 with known oxygen abundance (8 < 12 + log(O/H) < 8.7), using ultraviolet (UV), optical, mid-infrared (MIR), CO (1-0) and 21-cm line (HI) observations. We derive their spectral energy distribution, and we determine age, bolometric luminosities, masses and the extinction, by comparing the multi-band integrated photometry to single-age stellar population models. The stellar system ages range between 2 and 15 Myr, masses are between 3 x 10^2 and 4 x 10^4 M_sun, and the intrinsic extinction, A_V, varies from 0.3 to 1 mag. We find a correlation between age and extinction, and between the cluster mass and size. The MIR emission shows the presence of a dust component around the clusters whose fractional luminosity at 24 um, L_{24}/L_{Bol}, decreases with the galactocentric distance. However, the total IR luminosity inferred from L_{24} is smaller than what we derive from the extinction corrections. The Halpha luminosity predicted by population synthesis models is larger than the observed one, especially for low-mass systems (M < 10^4 M_sun). Such a difference is reduced, but not erased, when the incomplete sampling of the initial mass function (IMF) at the high-mass end is taken into account. Our results suggest that a non-negligible fraction of UV ionising and non-ionising radiation is leaking into the ISM outside the HII regions. This would be in agreement with the large UV and Halpha diffuse fractions observed in M33, but it implies that stellar systems younger than 3 Myr retain, on average, only 30% of their Lyman continuum photons. However, the uncertainties on cluster ages and the stochastic fluctuations of the IMF do not allow to accurately quantify this issue. We also consider the possibility that this discrepancy is the consequence of a suppressed or delayed formation of the most massive stars.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures.     The role of the RACK1 ortholog Cpc2p in modulating pheromone-induced cell cycle arrest in fission yeast

    The detection and amplification of extracellular signals requires the involvement of multiple protein components. In mammalian cells the receptor of activated C kinase (RACK1) is an important scaffolding protein for signal transduction networks. Further, it also performs a critical function in regulating the cell cycle by modulating the G1/S transition. Many eukaryotic cells express RACK1 orthologs, with one example being Cpc2p in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. In contrast to RACK1, Cpc2p has been described to positively regulate, at the ribosomal level, cells entry into M phase. In addition, Cpc2p controls the stress response pathways through an interaction with Msa2p, and sexual development by modulating Ran1p/Pat1p. Here we describe investigations into the role, which Cpc2p performs in controlling the G protein-mediated mating response pathway. Despite structural similarity to Gβ-like subunits, Cpc2p appears not to function at the G protein level. However, upon pheromone stimulation, cells overexpressing Cpc2p display substantial cell morphology defects, disorientation of septum formation and a significantly protracted G1 arrest. Cpc2p has the potential to function at multiple positions within the pheromone response pathway. We provide a mechanistic interpretation of this novel data by linking Cpc2p function, during the mating response, with its previous described interactions with Ran1p/Pat1p. We suggest that overexpressing Cpc2p prolongs the stimulated state of pheromone-induced cells by increasing ste11 gene expression. These data indicate that Cpc2p regulates the pheromone-induced cell cycle arrest in fission yeast by delaying cells entry into S phase
