Revised reference model for nitric acid
A nearly global set of data on the nitric acid distribution was obtained for seven months by the Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere (LIMS) experiment on the Nimbus 7 spacecraft. The evaluation of the accuracy, precision, and resolution of these data is described, and a description of the major features of the nitric acid distributions is presented. The zonal mean for nitric acid is distributed in a stratospheric layer that peaks near 30 mb, with the largest mixing ratios occurring in polar regions, especially in winter
Dressed-quarks and the Roper resonance
A Dyson-Schwinger equation calculation of the light hadron spectrum, which
correlates the masses of meson and baryon ground- and excited-states within a
single framework, produces a description of the Roper resonance that
corresponds closely with conclusions drawn recently by EBAC. Namely, the Roper
is a particular type of radial excitation of the nucleon's dressed-quark core
augmented by a material meson cloud component. There are, in addition, some
surprises.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Contribution to the Proceedings of "NSTAR2011 -

Chandra Observation of Abell 2065: An Unequal Mass Merger?
We present an analysis of a 41 ks Chandra observation of the merging cluster
Abell 2065 with the ACIS-I detector. Previous observations with ROSAT and ASCA
provided evidence for an ongoing merger, but also suggested that there were two
surviving cooling cores, which were associated with the two cD galaxies in the
center of the cluster. The Chandra observation reveals only one X-ray surface
brightness peak, which is associated with the more luminous, southern cD
galaxy. The gas related with that peak is cool and displaced slightly from the
position of the cD. The data suggest that this cool material has formed a cold
front. On the other hand, in the higher spatial resolution Chandra image, the
second feature to the north is not associated with the northern cD; rather, it
appears to be a trail of gas behind the main cD. We argue that only one of the
two cooling cores has survived the merger, although it is possible that the
northern cD may not have possessed a cool core prior to the merger. We use the
cool core survival to constrain the kinematics of the merger and we find an
upper limit of ~< 1900 km/s for the merger relative velocity. A surface
brightness discontinuity is found at ~140 kpc from the southern cD; the Mach
number for this feature is , although its
nature (shock or cold front) is not clear from the data. We argue that Abell
2065 is an example of an unequal mass merger. The more massive southern cluster
has driven a shock into the ICM of the infalling northern cluster, which has
disrupted the cool core of the latter, if one existed originally. We estimate
that core crossing occurred a few hundred Myr ago, probably for the first time.Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, ApJ in pres
Assessing individual differences in genome-wide gene expression in human whole blood: reliability over four hours and stability over 10 months.
Studying the causes and correlates of natural variation in gene expression in healthy populations assumes that individual differences in gene expression can be reliably and stably assessed across time. However, this is yet to be established. We examined 4-hour test-retest reliability and 10 month test-retest stability of individual differences in gene expression in ten 12-year-old children. Blood was collected on four occasions: 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Day 1 and 10 months later at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Total RNA was hybridized to Affymetrix-U133 plus 2.0 arrays. For each probeset, the correlation across individuals between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Day 1 estimates test-retest reliability. We identified 3,414 variable and abundantly expressed probesets whose 4-hour test-retest reliability exceeded .70, a conventionally accepted level of reliability, which we had 80% power to detect. Of the 3,414 reliable probesets, 1,752 were also significantly reliable 10 months later. We assessed the long-term stability of individual differences in gene expression by correlating the average expression level for each probe-set across the two 4-hour assessments on Day 1 with the average level of each probe-set across the two 4-hour assessments 10 months later. 1,291 (73.7%) of the 1,752 probe-sets that reliably detected individual differences across 4 hours on two occasions, 10 months apart, also stably detected individual differences across 10 months. Heritability, as estimated from the MZ twin intraclass correlations, is twice as high for the 1,752 reliable probesets versus all present probesets on the array (0.68 vs 0.34), and is even higher (0.76) for the 1,291 reliable probesets that are also stable across 10 months. The 1,291 probesets that reliably detect individual differences from a single peripheral blood collection and stably detect individual differences over 10 months are promising targets for research on the causes (e.g., eQTLs) and correlates (e.g., psychopathology) of individual differences in gene expression
ECONOMIC THRESHOLDS UNDER UNCERTAINTY WITH APPLICATION TO CORN NEMATODE MANAGEMENT
An economic threshold of agricultural pest management is derived. Results provide a method for researchers to use in making improved pest control recommendations to farmers without farm level decision-making. An empirical illustration for lesion nematode management in irrigated corn is given and directions for further research are indicated.Crop Production/Industries, Risk and Uncertainty,
Essence of the vacuum quark condensate
We show that the chiral-limit vacuum quark condensate is qualitatively
equivalent to the pseudoscalar meson leptonic decay constant in the sense that
they are both obtained as the chiral-limit value of well-defined
gauge-invariant hadron-to-vacuum transition amplitudes that possess a spectral
representation in terms of the current-quark mass. Thus, whereas it might
sometimes be convenient to imagine otherwise, neither is essentially a constant
mass-scale that fills all spacetime. This means, in particular, that the quark
condensate can be understood as a property of hadrons themselves, which is
expressed, for example, in their Bethe-Salpeter or light-front wavefunctions.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
The Toxoplasma gondii plastid replication and repair enzyme complex, PREX
A plastid-like organelle, the apicoplast, is essential to the majority of medically and veterinary important apicomplexan protozoa including Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium. The apicoplast contains multiple copies of a 35 kb genome, the replication of which is dependent upon nuclear-encoded proteins that are imported into the organelle. In P. falciparum an unusual multi-functional gene, pfprex, was previously identified and inferred to encode a protein with DNA primase, DNA helicase and DNA polymerase activities. Herein, we report the presence of a prex orthologue in T. gondii. The protein is predicted to have a bi-partite apicoplast targeting sequence similar to that demonstrated on the PfPREX polypeptide, capable of delivering marker proteins to the apicoplast. Unlike the P. falciparum gene that is devoid of introns, the T. gondii prex gene carries 19 introns, which are spliced to produce a contiguous mRNA. Bacterial expression of the polymerase domain reveals the protein to be active. Consistent with the reported absence of a plastid in Cryptosporidium species, in silico analysis of their genomes failed to demonstrate an orthologue of prex. These studies indicate that prex is conserved across the plastid-bearing apicomplexans and may play an important role in the replication of the plastid genome
