    Personlighetstrekk og ytelse i IT-supportteam

    Masteroppgave informasjonssystemer- Universitetet i Agder, 2014Kontekst: Personlighetstypetesting har i varierende grad blitt benyttet innen rekruttering og bemanningsbyråer. Slike tester er også innen forskning betraktet som instrumenter for å forutse individuell ytelse og teamytelse innenfor en rekke fagområder. Forskning har vist at også andre faktorer som motivasjon, arbeidsmiljø og aktiv bruk av målsetting påvirker ytelse generelt. Hensikt: Denne avhandlingen rapporterer resultatene fra en studie hvor vi har benyttet Five Factor Model (FFM) for å se på sammenhengen mellom personlighetstrekk og IT-supportteams ytelse. Metoder: Vi har benyttet en induktiv/kontekstbasert forskningstilnærming, og gjennomført dokumentanalyse og intervjuer med eksperter innen IT-support for å utvikle forskningsmodellen. Vi oppsummerer litteratur som omhandler effekten av personlighet i ulike IT/IS-team. Deretter beskriver vi en empirisk studie av 111 profesjonelle innen IT-support i 14 team. Studien etterspurte respondentenes vurdering av egne personlige egenskaper, teamlederes lederegenskaper og teamenes ytelse. Personligheten til teammedlemmene ble evaluert ved bruk av personlighetstesten International Personality Item Pool (IPIP). Vi benyttet 50-elementersutgaven av IPIP. Resultater: Alle personlighetstrekk ble undersøkt mot teammedlemmenes personlige egenskaper. De sterkeste sammenhengene er mellom emosjonell stabilitet og økt positivitet, mellom medgjørlighet og økt teamorientering og serviceinnstilling, og mellom planmessighet og økt grad av selvstendighet. Alle personlighetstrekk ble undersøkt mot teamledernes lederegenskaper. Vi fant sammenhenger mellom åpenhet og økt intellektuell stimulering, mellom planmessighet og økte motiverende evner, mellom medgjørlighet og økt empati, og mellom ekstroversjon og minkende empati. Vi klarte å påvise to sammenhenger mellom teammedlemmenes personlige egenskaper og ytelse i teamene. Økt effektivitet førte til bedre kommunikasjon ut til kundene. Bedre kommunikasjonsevner førte til bedre informasjon om status på henvendelser. Tre sammenhenger mellom teamlederes lederegenskaper og ytelse i teamene ble påvist. Økt intellektuell stimulering av de ansatte førte til bedre kommunikasjon ut til kundene. Teamledernes motiverende evner påvirket teamets servicegrad på en positiv måte. Personlig oppfølging og evnen til å se de enkelte ansatte førte til økt respons- og løsningstid. Homogenitet i teamsammensetning ble funnet å gi økt ytelse i teamene. Konklusjon: Data og analyser omtalt i denne avhandlingen finner flere sterke sammenhenger mellom personlighetsaspekter og personlige egenskaper, lederegenskaper og ytelse i IT-supportteam. Det faktum at meget gode personlighetstester med god støtte i psykologisk teori og litteratur i dag er lett tilgjengelig på Internett, gjør at vi mener både forskere og praktikere bør legge mer vekt på personlighetsanalyser. I kombinasjon med gode statistiske verktøy lett tilgjengelig i ulike programvarepakker, danner de et utmerket metode- og verktøysett for å vurdere effekten av personlighet på personlige egenskaper og lederegenskaper, og dermed til syvende og sist på ytelse i IT-supportteam. Denne kunnskapen kan brukes av ledere til å danne et sterkere grunnlag for effektiv teamsammensetning. Dette vil være et viktig skritt i retning av å vurdere menneskelige faktorer i IT-supportteam

    A small series of pole sport injuries

    Pole sport is a relatively new athletic sport that is gaining increasing popularity and for which national and international championships are held. It evolved from pole dance and harbours the risk of falls from heights of up to three metres. Currently, no studies on pole sport injuries are available. This is the first description of a small series of five pole sport injuries. A retrospective review of the case histories and radiological findings was performed, and in addition, a follow-up interview was carried out. All the patients were female and had a mean age of 27.2 years. Most injuries were located in the head, neck or spine. The use of proper training equipment like landing mats and grip aids could probably reduce accidents

    Problem Formulation and Fairness

    Formulating data science problems is an uncertain and difficult process. It requires various forms of discretionary work to translate high-level objectives or strategic goals into tractable problems, necessitating, among other things, the identification of appropriate target variables and proxies. While these choices are rarely self-evident, normative assessments of data science projects often take them for granted, even though different translations can raise profoundly different ethical concerns. Whether we consider a data science project fair often has as much to do with the formulation of the problem as any property of the resulting model. Building on six months of ethnographic fieldwork with a corporate data science team---and channeling ideas from sociology and history of science, critical data studies, and early writing on knowledge discovery in databases---we describe the complex set of actors and activities involved in problem formulation. Our research demonstrates that the specification and operationalization of the problem are always negotiated and elastic, and rarely worked out with explicit normative considerations in mind. In so doing, we show that careful accounts of everyday data science work can help us better understand how and why data science problems are posed in certain ways---and why specific formulations prevail in practice, even in the face of what might seem like normatively preferable alternatives. We conclude by discussing the implications of our findings, arguing that effective normative interventions will require attending to the practical work of problem formulation.Comment: Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency (FAT* '19), January 29-31, 2019, Atlanta, GA, US

    On giant shoulders: How a seamount affects the microbial community composition of seawater and sponges

    Seamounts represent ideal systems to study the influence and interdependency of environmental gradients at a single geographic location. These topographic features represent a prominent habitat for various forms of life, including microbiota and macrobiota, spanning benthic as well as pelagic organisms. While it is known that seamounts are globally abundant structures, it still remains unclear how and to which extent the complexity of the sea floor is intertwined with the local oceanographic mosaic, biogeochemistry, and microbiology of a seamount ecosystem. Along these lines, the present study aimed to explore whether and to what extent seamounts can have an imprint on the microbial community composition of seawater and of sessile benthic invertebrates, sponges. For our high-resolution sampling approach of microbial diversity (16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing) along with measurements of inorganic nutrients and other biogeochemical parameters, we focused on the Schulz Bank seamount ecosystem, a sponge ground ecosystem which is located on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge. Seawater samples were collected at two sampling depths (mid-water, MW, and near-bed water, BW) from a total of 19 sampling sites. With a clustering approach we defined microbial microhabitats within the pelagic realm at Schulz Bank, which were mapped onto the seamount's topography and related to various environmental parameters (such as suspended particulate matter, SPM; dissolved inorganic carbon, DIC; silicate, SiO−4; phosphate, PO3−4; ammonia, NH+4; nitrate, NO2−3; nitrite, NO−2; depth; and dissolved oxygen, O2). The results of our study reveal a “seamount effect” (sensu stricto) on the microbial mid-water pelagic community at least 200 m above the sea floor. Further, we observed a strong spatial heterogeneity in the pelagic microbial landscape across the seamount, with planktonic microbial communities reflecting oscillatory and circulatory water movements, as well as processes of bentho-pelagic coupling. Depth, NO2−3, SiO−4, and O2 concentrations differed significantly between the determined pelagic microbial clusters close to the sea floor (BW), suggesting that these parameters were presumably linked to changes in microbial community structures. Secondly, we assessed the associated microbial community compositions of three sponge species along a depth gradient of the seamount. While sponge-associated microbial communities were found to be mainly species-specific, we also detected significant intra-specific differences between individuals, depending on the pelagic near-bed cluster they originated from. The variable microbial phyla (i.e. phyla which showed significant differences across varying depth, NO2−3, SiO−4, O2 concentrations, and different from local seawater communities) were distinct for every sponge species when considering average abundances per species. Variable microbial phyla included representatives of both those taxa traditionally counted for the variable community fraction and taxa counted traditionally for the core community fraction. Microbial co-occurrence patterns for the three examined sponge species Geodia hentscheli, Lissodendoryx complicata, and Schaudinnia rosea were distinct from each other. Over all, this study shows that topographic structures such as the Schulz Bank seamount can have an imprint (seamount effect sensu lato) on both the microbial community composition of seawater and sessile benthic invertebrates such as sponges by an interplay between the geology, physical oceanography, biogeochemistry, and microbiology of seamounts

    Complement Receptor 1 (CR1, CD35) Polymorphisms and Soluble CR1: A Proposed Anti-inflammatory Role to Quench the Fire of "Fogo Selvagem" Pemphigus Foliaceus

    Pemphigus foliaceus is an autoimmune disease that is sporadic around the world but endemic in Brazil, where it is known as fogo selvagem (FS). Characterized by autoantibodies against the desmosomal cadherin desmoglein 1, FS causes painful erosions, and crusts that may be widespread. The recognition of antigens, including exposed sugar moieties, activates the complement system. Complement receptor 1 (CR1, CD35), which is responsible for the Knops blood group on erythrocytes (York and McCoy antigens), is also expressed by antigen-presenting cells. This regulates the complement system by removing opsonized antigens, blocking the final steps of the complement cascade. Membrane-bound CR1 also fosters antigen presentation to B cells, whereas soluble CR1 has anti-inflammatory properties. CR1 gene polymorphisms have been associated with susceptibility to complex diseases. In order to investigate the association of CR1 polymorphisms with FS susceptibility, we developed a multiplex sequence-specific assay to haplotype eleven polymorphisms in up to 367 FS patients and 242 controls from an endemic area and 289 from a non-endemic area. We also measured soluble CR1 (sCR1) in the serum of 53 FS patients and 27 controls and mRNA levels in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 63 genotyped controls. The haplotypes CR1 * 3B2B (with the York antigen-encoded by p.1408Met) and CR1 * 3A2A (with p.1208Arg) were associated with protection against FS (OR = 0.57, P = 0.027, and OR = 0.46, P = 0.014, respectively). In contrast, the CR1 * 1 haplotype (with the McCoy antigen - encoded by p.1590Glu) was associated with FS susceptibility (OR = 4.97, P < 0.001). Heterozygote rs12034383 * A/G individuals presented higher mRNA expression than homozygotes with the G allele (P = 0.04). The lowest sCR1 levels occurred in patients with active disease before treatment (P = 0.036). Patients in remission had higher levels of sCR1 than did healthy controls (P = 0.013). Among those under treatment, patients with localized lesions also presented higher sCR1 levels than those with generalized lesions (P = 0.0073). In conclusion, the Knops blood group seems to modulate susceptibility to the disease. Furthermore, corticosteroid treatment might increase sCR1 serum levels, and higher levels may play an anti-inflammatory role in patients with FS, limiting the distribution of lesions. Based on these results, we suggest CR1 as a potential new therapeutic target for the treatment of FS

    Biodiversity, environmental drivers, and sustainability of the global deep-sea sponge microbiome

    In the deep ocean symbioses between microbes and invertebrates are emerging as key drivers of ecosystem health and services. We present a large-scale analysis of microbial diversity in deep-sea sponges (Porifera) from scales of sponge individuals to ocean basins, covering 52 locations, 1077 host individuals translating into 169 sponge species (including understudied glass sponges), and 469 reference samples, collected anew during 21 ship-based expeditions. We demonstrate the impacts of the sponge microbial abundance status, geographic distance, sponge phylogeny, and the physical-biogeochemical environment as drivers of microbiome composition, in descending order of relevance. Our study further discloses that fundamental concepts of sponge microbiology apply robustly to sponges from the deep-sea across distances of >10,000 km. Deep-sea sponge microbiomes are less complex, yet more heterogeneous, than their shallow-water counterparts. Our analysis underscores the uniqueness of each deep-sea sponge ground based on which we provide critical knowledge for conservation of these vulnerable ecosystems

    Genetic Associations and Differential mRNA Expression Levels of Host Genes Suggest a Viral Trigger for Endemic Pemphigus Foliaceus

    The long search for the environmental trigger of the endemic pemphigus foliaceus (EPF, fogo selvagem) has not yet resulted in any tangible findings. Here, we searched for genetic asso ciations and the differential expression of host genes involved in early viral infections and innate antiviral defense. Genetic variants could alter the structure, expression sites, or levels of the gene products, impacting their functions. By analyzing 3063 variants of 166 candidate genes in 227 EPF patients and 194 controls, we found 12 variants within 11 genes associated with differential suscepti bility (p < 0.005) to EPF. The products of genes TRIM5, TPCN2, EIF4E, EIF4E3, NUP37, NUP50, NUP88, TPR, USP15, IRF8, and JAK1 are involved in different mechanisms of viral control, for example, the regulation of viral entry into the host cell or recognition of viral nucleic acids and proteins. Only two of nine variants were also associated in an independent German cohort of sporadic PF (75 patients, 150 controls), aligning with our hypothesis that antiviral host genes play a major role in EPF due to a specific virus–human interaction in the endemic region. Moreover, CCL5, P4HB, and APOBEC3G mRNA levels were increased (p < 0.001) in CD4+ T lymphocytes of EPF patients. Because there is limited or no evidence that these genes are involved in autoimmunity, their crucial role in antiviral responses and the associations that we observed support the hypothesis of a viral trigger for EPF, presumably a still unnoticed flavivirus. This work opens new frontiers in searching for the trigger of EPF, with the potential to advance translational research that aims for disease prevention and treatment
