    What Google Teaches Us About The Child Rights Movement

    Technology both helps and hinders what we know about human rights. Use of Google is of central importance to both the Sociology of Knowledge and the creation of internet literacy. In this study, different search engines are compared regarding content of “child rights” in the fifty United States. Findings include: importance of algorithmic loading of sites; number of hits may not reflect the importance or accuracy of a topic; different search engines produce different findings; and personalized searches result in different results. Personalization of searches in accordance to one’s previous search history may result in people being given information that reinforces their views, not challenge them. This means that people opposed to child rights may not be afforded the same information as people who have a search history supporting them. Because searches do not necessarily yield the same information about human rights, scholars and the public must be attentive to adequately assess the accurate or skewed nature of a keyword search

    Maternal exposure to soy diet reduces atheroma in hyperlipidemic F1 offspring mice by promoting macrophage and T cell anti-inflammatory responses

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Maternal hypercholesterolemia has been implicated in earlier onset of atherosclerotic lesions in neonatal offspring. In this study, we investigated whether maternal exposure to soy protein isolate (SPI) diet attenuated the progression of atherosclerosis in F1 offspring. METHOD: Pregnant apolipoprotein E knockout (Apoe-/-) female mice were fed SPI diet until postnatal day 21 (PND21) of the offspring (SPI-offspring). SPI-offspring were switched at PND21 to casein (CAS) diet until PND140. Mice fed CAS throughout their lifetime (gestation to adulthood) were used as controls (CAS-offspring). RESULTS: Atherosclerotic lesions in the aortic sinuses were reduced in SPI-offspring compared with CAS-offspring. Total serum cholesterol levels in CAS-offspring or dams were comparable to levels in their SPI-counterparts, suggesting that alternative mechanisms contributed to the athero-protective effect of maternal SPI diet. Aortic VCAM-1, MCP-1, and TNF-α mRNA and protein expression, and expression of macrophage pro-inflammatory cytokines was reduced in SPI-offspring. Interestingly, CD4+ T cells from SPI-offspring showed reduced IFN-γ expression (Th1), while the expression of IL-10 (Th2/Treg), and IL-13 (Th2) was increased. DNA methylation analyses revealed that anti-inflammatory T cell-associated Gata3 and Il13 promoter regions were hypomethylated in SPI-offspring. These findings suggest that anti-inflammatory macrophage and T cell response may have contributed to the athero-protective effect in SPI-offspring. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrate that gestational and lactational soy diet exposure inhibits susceptibility to atherosclerotic lesion formation by promoting anti-inflammatory responses by macrophages and T cells

    Form of Supplemental Selenium in Vitamin-Mineral Premixes Differentially Affects Early Luteal and Gestational Concentrations of Progesterone, and Postpartum Concentrations of Prolactin in Beef Cows

    Soils with marginal to deficient levels of selenium (Se) are widespread in the northwest, northeast, and southeast US. Supplementation to the diet of forage-grazing beef cattle with a vitamin-mineral mix containing additional Se is recommended in these geographic regions. We have reported that the form of supplemental Se provided to Angus-cross beef cows can affect circulating levels of progesterone (P4) on day 6 of the estrous cycle, a time when increased P4 is known to promote fertility. The objectives of this study were to (1) confirm and expand upon our initial report that the form of Se provided to cows affects early luteal-phase concentrations of systemic P4, (2) determine the effects of the form of Se on concentrations of P4 during gestation, and (3) determine the effects of the form of Se on concentrations of prolactin (PRL) during lactation. Throughout this study, Angus-cross beef cows had ad libitum access to a vitamin-mineral mix containing 35 ppm of Se in either an inorganic form (ISe) or a 1:1 mix of inorganic and organic forms (MIX). We observed a MIX-induced increase (p = 0.006) in systemic concentrations of P4 on day 7 but not on days 4 or 10 of the estrous cycle, consistent with our earlier report. We observed a MIX-induced increase (p = 0.02) in the systemic concentration of P4 at months 1, 3, 5, and 7 of gestation, and a MIX-induced decrease (p \u3c 0.05) in systemic concentrations of PRL at months 5 and 6 of lactation. In summary, the form of Se provided to cows can be manipulated to affect the early luteal phase and gestational concentrations of P4, and postpartum concentrations of PRL

    Herbicides and Cereal Rye for Palmer Amaranth Management in Corn and Soybean

    Palmer amaranth control is a substantial problem for corn and soybean producers in the United States. Farmers are increasingly interested in cover crops a tool to manage this troublesome weed. Studies were conducted at Rossville, Kansas, in 2023, to assess the most effective combination of herbicides and cereal rye cover crop termination time to control Palmer amaranth in corn and soybean. Treatments that included atrazine + an HPPD-inhibiting herbicide + a VLCFA-inhibiting herbicide plus glyphosate provided the greatest weed control in corn. For soybeans, the combination with the greatest weed control was a PPO-inhibiting herbicide + a VLCFA-inhibiting herbicide + an ALS-inhibiting herbicide plus glyphosate

    poster abstractWhen treated with ammonia or methylamine, unnatural amino acids bound to Wang resin (1) are released as their corresponding amides 2 in good yield and purity. When carried out at room temperature, aminolytic cleavage proceeds slowly with a four-day exposure to ammonia in methanol representing an optimal reaction time. Aminolytic cleavage proceeds well with unhindered primary amines, however, the hindered amine isopropylamine and benzylamines are unacceptably slow to effect cleavage. Use of the secondary amine pyrrolidine led to a complex mixture. Due to the large stoichiometric amine excess required, the scope is currently limited to unhindered, volatile, primary amines. The overall synthesis of 2 from BPI-Gly-Wang resin represents a new Distributed Drug Discovery Laboratory (D3-7) and was rolled out to the spring 2016 Organic II laboratory

    A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial for a Multi-Level, Clinic-Based Smoking Cessation Program with Women in Appalachian Communities: Study Protocol for the Break Free Program

    BACKGROUND: The cervical cancer burden is high among women living in Appalachia. Cigarette smoking, a cervical cancer risk factor, is also highly prevalent in this population. This project aims to increase smoking cessation among women living in Appalachia by embedding a smoking cessation program within a larger, integrated cervical cancer prevention program. METHODS: The broader program, the Take CARE study, is a multi-site research collaborative designed to address three risk factors for cervical cancer incidence and mortality: tobacco use, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, and cervical cancer screening. Break Free is a primary care clinic-based implementation program that aims to promote smoking cessation among female smokers in Appalachia by standardizing clinical practice protocols. Break Free includes: (1) implementation of a tobacco user identification system in the Electronic Health Record, (2) clinic staff and provider training on the Ask, Advise and Refer (AAR) model, (3) provider implementation of AAR to identify and treat women who want to quit smoking within the next 6 months, (4) facilitated access to cessation phone counseling plus pharmacotherapy, and (5) the bundling of Break Free tobacco cessation with HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening interventions in an integrated approach to cervical cancer prevention. The study spans 35 Appalachian health clinics across 10 healthcare systems. We aim to enroll 51 adult female smokers per health system (total N = 510). Baseline and follow-up data will be obtained from participant (provider and patient) surveys. The primary outcome is self-reported 12-month point prevalence abstinence among enrolled patients. All randomized patients are asked to complete follow-up surveys, regardless of whether they participated in tobacco treatment. Data analysis of the primary aims will follow intent-to-treat methodology. Secondary outcomes will assess program implementation and cost effectiveness. DISCUSSION: Addressing high tobacco use rates is critical for reducing cervical cancer morbidity and mortality among women living in Appalachia. This study evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of a smoking cessation program in increasing smoking cessation among female smokers. If results demonstrate effectiveness and sustainability, implementation of this program into other health care clinics could reduce both rates of smoking and cervical cancer.
