Plastic Guidance Fins for Long Rod Projectiles .
Projectile tail fins on long rod kinetic energy (KE) penetrators serve the same purpose as fletchings (feathers) on an arrow, namely, they help align the projectile axis with its velocity vector. This reduces the projectile's yaw and hence reduces its aerodynamic drag. In addition, a low yaw angle at target impact helps to maximise the projectile's target penetration. It is typical for projectiles to exit the gun muzzle and enter free flight at some ndn-zero yaw angle. Aerodynamic forces acting on yawed tail fins create a stabilising torque about the projectile's centre of gravity (CG). This torque can be increased by making the fin material lighter. Most conventional long rod penetrators fired from high performance guns have tail fins made from aluminium. However, aluminium can undergo catastrophic oxidation (rapid burning) in-bore. Coating aluminium with Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ {hardcoat) prevents ignition of the substrate, provided solid propellant grain impacts do not chip the brittle hardcoat off the surface. Plastic is lighter than aluminium and less exothermic when oxidized. Therefore, other factors aside, it is conceivable that plastic fins could increase projectile stability while incurring less thermal erosion than aluminium. However, thermal loads are not the only concern when considering plastic as an alternative tail fin material. The mechanical strength of plastic is also a critical factor. This paper discusses some of the successes and failures of plastic fins, at least relatively thin fins, for use as KE stabilisers
Effect of Propellant Combustion on Sapphire
Sapphire (Al2O3) is the window material of choice for laser beam transmission into the combustion chamber of laser-ignited guns. To evaluate the long-term effects of propellant combustion on an Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ laser window, it is important to know the window temperature during firing. This paper presents temperature data on an Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ sample located in the breech face of the gun where the laser window would be in a laser-ignited 155 mm(M199) cannon. Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ sample is a substrate material of a commercially sold thin-film thermocouple, and is therefore thermally, if not optically, representative of an actual Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ laser window
Aerodynamic Jump for Long Rod Penetrators
Aerodynamic jump for a non-spinning kinetic energy penetrator is neither a discontinuous change in the ,direction of motion at the origin of free night, nor is it the converse, i.e. a cumulativer~direc4on over a domain of infinite extent. Rather aerodynamic jump, for such a projectile, is a localised redirection of the centre of gravity motion, caused ~ the force of lift due to yaw over ther4latively short region from entry into free flight until the yaw reaches its first maximum. The primary objective of this paper is to provide answtfrs to the questions like what is aerodynamic jump, what liauses it, !lnd wh~t aspects df the flight trajectory does it refer to, or account for
The Theory Behind TheoryMine
Abstract. We describe the technology behind the TheoryMine novelty gift company, which sells the rights to name novel mathematical theorems. A tower of four computer systems is used to generate recursive theories, then to speculate conjectures in those theories and then to prove these conjectures. All stages of the process are entirely automatic. The process guarantees large numbers of sound, novel theorems of some intrinsic merit.
The Mass Assembly History of Spheroidal Galaxies: Did Newly-Formed Systems Arise Via Major Mergers?
We examine the properties of a morphologically-selected sample of 0.4<z<1.0
spheroidal galaxies in the GOODS fields in order to ascertain whether their
increase in abundance with time arises primarily from mergers. To address this
question we determine scaling relations between the dynamical mass determined
from stellar velocity dispersions, and the stellar mass determined from optical
and infrared photometry. We exploit these relations across the larger sample
for which we have stellar masses in order to construct the first statistically
robust estimate of the evolving dynamical mass function over 0<z<1. The trends
observed match those seen in the stellar mass functions of Bundy et al. 2005
regarding the top-down growth in the abundance of spheroidal galaxies. By
referencing our dynamical masses to the halo virial mass we compare the growth
rate in the abundance of spheroidals to that predicted by the assembly of dark
matter halos. Our comparisons demonstrate that major mergers do not fully
account for the appearance of new spheroidals since z~1 and that additional
mechanisms, such as morphological transformations, are required to drive the
observed evolution.Comment: Accepted to ApJL; New version corrects the Millennium merger
predictions--further details at
