A contribution to the chemical pathology of the lipoids

From the biological, and especially medical, point of view no class of substances has in recent years grown so rapidly in importance as the lipoide. The purely chemical investigation of these substances has been carried on by numerous observers since the middle of last Century, but it is only during the last twenty years, and especially the last ten, that any great progress has been made. At the present day we know thoroughly the constitution of several important lipoide and we are able, in a general way, to make a reasonable classification of those which are less well known.Mayer and Overton's theory of narcosis, the explanation of the pharmacology of many drugs, and the numerous physiological theories dependant upon the physics of a cell membrane have all helped to increase the importance of a thorough knowledge of the lipoide in physiology, and have stimulated numerous researches, but the role played by these substances in pathological processes remains almost uninvestigated

Aircraft measurements of electrified clouds at Kennedy Space Center. Part 2: Case study: 4 November 1988 (88309)

During the fall of 1988, a Schweizer airplane equipped to measure electric field and other meteorological parameters flew over Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in a program to study clouds defined in the existing launch restriction criteria. A case study is presented of a single flight over KSC on November 4, 1988. This flight was chosen for two reasons: (1) the clouds were weakly electrified, and no lightning was reported during the flight; and (2) electric field mills in the surface array at KSC indicated field strengths greater than 3 kV/m, yet the aircraft flying directly over them at an altitude of 3.4 km above sea level measured field strengths of less than 1.6 kV/m. Transitioning Into Contemporary Theory: Critical Postmodern Theory in Mathematics Education Research

In this theoretical paper, the authors provide an overview of mathematics education as a research domain, identifying and briefly discussing four transitions or historical moments in mathematics education research. Using the Instructional Triangle as a point of reference for the dynamics of mathematics instruction, they illustrate how mathematics education researchers working in different moments explore different questions and use different theoretical perspectives. The authors then provide brief summaries of critical theory and postmodern theory, and suggest critical postmodern theory (CPT) as a hybrid theory that offers new possibilities for conceptualizing and conducting mathematics education research
