A Smirnov-Bickel-Rosenblatt theorem for compactly-supported wavelets
In nonparametric statistical problems, we wish to find an estimator of an
unknown function f. We can split its error into bias and variance terms;
Smirnov, Bickel and Rosenblatt have shown that, for a histogram or kernel
estimate, the supremum norm of the variance term is asymptotically distributed
as a Gumbel random variable. In the following, we prove a version of this
result for estimators using compactly-supported wavelets, a popular tool in
nonparametric statistics. Our result relies on an assumption on the nature of
the wavelet, which must be verified by provably-good numerical approximations.
We verify our assumption for Daubechies wavelets and symlets, with N = 6, ...,
20 vanishing moments; larger values of N, and other wavelet bases, are easily
checked, and we conjecture that our assumption holds also in those cases
Gas chromatographic mass spectrometric detection of dihydroxy fatty acids preserved in the 'bound' phase of organic residues of archaeological pottery vessels.
A methodology is presented for the determination of dihydroxy fatty acids preserved in the ‘bound’ phase of organic residues preserved in archaeological potsherds. The method comprises saponification, esterification, silica gel column chromatographic fractionation, and analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The electron ionisation mass spectra of the trimethylsilyl ether methyl ester derivatives are characterised by fragment ions arising from cleavage of the bond between the two vicinal trimethylsiloxy groups. Other significant fragment ions are [M–15]+., [M–31]+., m/z 147 and ions characteristic of vicinal disubstituted (trimethylsiloxy) TMSO? groups (?7,8, ?9,10,?11,12 and ?13,14: m/z 304, 332, 360 and 388, respectively). The dihydroxy fatty acids identified in archaeological extracts exhibited carbon numbers ranging from C16 to C22 and concentrations varying from 0.05 to 14.05 ?g g?1. The wide range of dihydroxy fatty acids observed indicates that this approach may be applied confidently in screening archaeological potsherds for the degradation products of monounsaturated fatty acids derived from commodities processed in archaeological pottery vessels

Live tweeting of unfolding events is standard practice. In March 2014, Oscar Pistorius went on trial in the Gauteng High Court for murder. Hundreds of journalists present began live-tweeting coverage, an unprecedented combination of international interest, permission to use technology and access which resulted in massive streams of consciousness reports of events as they unfolded. Based on a corpus of Twitter feeds of twenty-four journalists covering the trial, this study analyses the content and strategies of these feeds in order to present an understanding of how microblogging is used as a live reporting tool. This study shows the development of standardised language and strategies in reporting on Twitter, concluding that journalists adopt a narrow range of approaches, with no significant variation in terms of gender, location, or medium. This is in contrast to earlier studies in the field (Awad, 2006, Hedman, 2015; Kothari, 2010; Lariscy, Avery, Sweetser, & Howes, 2009 Lasorsa, 2012; Lasorsa, Lewis, & Holton, 2011; Sigal, 1999, Vis, 2013).Peer reviewe
On Deriving Nested Calculi for Intuitionistic Logics from Semantic Systems
This paper shows how to derive nested calculi from labelled calculi for propositional intuitionistic logic and first-order intuitionistic logic with constant domains, thus connecting the general results for labelled calculi with the more refined formalism of nested sequents. The extraction of nested calculi from labelled calculi obtains via considerations pertaining to the elimination of structural rules in labelled derivations. Each aspect of the extraction process is motivated and detailed, showing that each nested calculus inherits favorable proof-theoretic properties from its associated labelled calculus
Predators reduce extinction risk in noisy metapopulations
Background
Spatial structure across fragmented landscapes can enhance regional population persistence by promoting local “rescue effects.” In small, vulnerable populations, where chance or random events between individuals may have disproportionately large effects on species interactions, such local processes are particularly important. However, existing theory often only describes the dynamics of metapopulations at regional scales, neglecting the role of multispecies population dynamics within habitat patches.
Findings
By coupling analysis across spatial scales we quantified the interaction between local scale population regulation, regional dispersal and noise processes in the dynamics of experimental host-parasitoid metapopulations. We find that increasing community complexity increases negative correlation between local population dynamics. A potential mechanism underpinning this finding was explored using a simple population dynamic model.
Conclusions
Our results suggest a paradox: parasitism, whilst clearly damaging to hosts at the individual level, reduces extinction risk at the population level

Evolutionary bi-stability in pathogen transmission mode
Many pathogens transmit to new hosts by both infection (horizontal transmission) and transfer to the
infected host's offspring (vertical transmission). These two transmission modes require speci®c adap-
tations of the pathogen that can be mutually exclusive, resulting in a trade-off between horizontal and
vertical transmission. We show that in mathematical models such trade-offs can lead to the simultaneous
existence of two evolutionary stable states (evolutionary bi-stability) of allocation of resources to the two
modes of transmission. We also show that jumping between evolutionary stable states can be induced by
gradual environmental changes. Using quantitative PCR-based estimates of abundance in seed and vege-
tative parts, we show that the pathogen of wheat, Phaeosphaeria nodorum, has jumped between two
distinct states of transmission mode twice in the past 160 years, which, based on published evidence,
we interpret as adaptation to environmental change. The ®nding of evolutionary bi-stability has impli-
cations for human, animal and other plant diseases. An ill-judged change in a disease control
programme could cause the pathogen to evolve a new, and possibly more damaging, combination of
transmission modes. Similarly, environmental changes can shift the balance between transmission
modes, with adverse effects on human, animal and plant health
Mechanisms of root reinforcement in soils:An experimental methodology using four-dimensional X-ray computed tomography and digital volume correlation
Vegetation on railway or highway slopes can improve slope stability through the generation of soil pore water suctions by plant transpiration and mechanical soil reinforcement by the roots. To incorporate the enhanced shearing resistance and stiffness of root-reinforced soils in stability calculations, it is necessary to understand and quantify its effectiveness. This requires integrated and sophisticated experimental and multiscale modelling approaches to develop an understanding of the processes at different length scales, from individual root-soil interaction through to full soil-profile or slope scale. One of the challenges with multiscale models is ensuring that they sufficiently closely represent real behaviour. This requires calibration against detailed high-quality and data-rich experiments. This study presents a novel experimental methodology, which combines in situ direct shear loading of a willow root reinforced soil with X-ray computed tomography to capture the 3D chronology of soil and root deformation within the shear zone. Digital volume correlation (DVC) analysis was applied to the computed tomography (CT) dataset to obtain full-field 3D displacement and strain information. This paper demonstrates the feasibility and discusses the challenges associated with DVC experiments on root-reinforced soils
Musical preferences and technologies: Contemporary material and symbolic distinctions criticised
Today how individuals interact with various cultural items is not perfectly consistent with theoretical frameworks of influential scholars on cultural consumption, such as Bourdieu (1984), Gans (1999), and Peterson and Simkus (1992). One such variation is in the ever increasing variety of technological modes to acquire and listen to music (Pinch and Bijsterveld, 2004). However, as a consequence of digital divides (van Dijk, 2006), technological items may not be distributed equally among social groups. At present, the value of status-making through a preference for different genres of music extends itself to different forms of consumption and ways of experiencing music. We are yet to fully understand the power these practices have on generating status. This article is therefore motivated by the need to integrate within quantitative frameworks of taste and cultural consumption, an analysis of individuals’ technological engagement. These two dimensions, integrated as components of musical practices, enhance our understanding of cultural boundaries across different social groups.The objective is to bridge a gap detected in the literature, addressing the following questions: Are technological modes to listen to music related to musical tastes
Virus Replication as a Phenotypic Version of Polynucleotide Evolution
In this paper we revisit and adapt to viral evolution an approach based on
the theory of branching process advanced by Demetrius, Schuster and Sigmund
("Polynucleotide evolution and branching processes", Bull. Math. Biol. 46
(1985) 239-262), in their study of polynucleotide evolution. By taking into
account beneficial effects we obtain a non-trivial multivariate generalization
of their single-type branching process model. Perturbative techniques allows us
to obtain analytical asymptotic expressions for the main global parameters of
the model which lead to the following rigorous results: (i) a new criterion for
"no sure extinction", (ii) a generalization and proof, for this particular
class of models, of the lethal mutagenesis criterion proposed by Bull,
Sanju\'an and Wilke ("Theory of lethal mutagenesis for viruses", J. Virology 18
(2007) 2930-2939), (iii) a new proposal for the notion of relaxation time with
a quantitative prescription for its evaluation, (iv) the quantitative
description of the evolution of the expected values in in four distinct
"stages": extinction threshold, lethal mutagenesis, stationary "equilibrium"
and transient. Finally, based on these quantitative results we are able to draw
