The Odyssey Approach for Optimizing Federated SPARQL Queries
Answering queries over a federation of SPARQL endpoints requires combining
data from more than one data source. Optimizing queries in such scenarios is
particularly challenging not only because of (i) the large variety of possible
query execution plans that correctly answer the query but also because (ii)
there is only limited access to statistics about schema and instance data of
remote sources. To overcome these challenges, most federated query engines rely
on heuristics to reduce the space of possible query execution plans or on
dynamic programming strategies to produce optimal plans. Nevertheless, these
plans may still exhibit a high number of intermediate results or high execution
times because of heuristics and inaccurate cost estimations. In this paper, we
present Odyssey, an approach that uses statistics that allow for a more
accurate cost estimation for federated queries and therefore enables Odyssey to
produce better query execution plans. Our experimental results show that
Odyssey produces query execution plans that are better in terms of data
transfer and execution time than state-of-the-art optimizers. Our experiments
using the FedBench benchmark show execution time gains of at least 25 times on

Strategies for executing federated queries in SPARQL1.1
A common way for exposing RDF data on the Web is by means of
SPARQL endpoints which allow end users and applications to query just the
RDF data they want. However, servers hosting SPARQL endpoints often restrict
access to the data by limiting the amount of results returned per query or the
amount of queries per time that a client may issue. As this may affect query
completeness when using SPARQL1.1's federated query extension, we analysed
different strategies to implement federated queries with the goal to circumvent
endpoint limits. We show that some seemingly intuitive methods for decomposing
federated queries provide unsound results in the general case, and provide
fixes or discuss under which restrictions these recipes are still applicable. Finally,
we evaluate the proposed strategies for checking their feasibility in practice
Preliminary Results from the Experimental Study of CO2-Brine-Rock Interactions at Elevated T & P: Implications for the Pilot Plant for CO2 Storage in Spain
AbstractA new experimental program has been carried out in order to study CO2-brine-rock interactions susceptible to take place in conditions close to those expected in the pilot plant that is being developed in Spain (a carbonate reservoir located at more than 800 m depth, with 15% porosity, and a salinity of the native brine between 20 – 90g/L). The combination of preliminary experimental and numerical modeling (PHREEQC) results suggests that the main geochemical processes are calcite dissolution and anhydrite precipitation
Strong Purcell effect observed in single thick shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals coupled to localized surface plasmons
High quality factor dielectric cavities designed to a nanoscale accuracy are
mostly used to increase the spontaneous emission rate of a single emitter. Here
we show that the coupling, at room temperature, between thick shell CdSe/CdS
nanocrystals and random metallic films offers a very promising alternative
approach. Optical modes confined at the nanoscale induce strong Purcell factors
reaching values as high as 60. Moreover the quantum emission properties can be
tailored: strong antibunching or radiative biexcitonic cascades can be obtained
with high photon collection efficiency and extremely reduced blinking.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figure
Factors that control the geochemical evolution of hydrothermal systems of alkaline water in granites in Central Pyrenees (Spain)
La evolución geoquÃmica de las soluciones de los sistemas hidrotermales de Caldas de BoÃ, Artiés, Tredós y Les, situados en el Pirineo Central (Spain), muestra diferencias reflejadas en la concentración de sólidos disueltos y en la presencia de una situación de equilibrio o desequilibrio en profundidad de las soluciones respecto a la albita. La datación (14C) de las aguas pertenecientes a los distintos sistemas hidrotermales ha puesto de manifiesto que el tiempo de residencia no es el factor de control determinante de las diferencias existentes en el grado de evolución geoquÃmica alcanzado por las mismas, teniendo que contemplarse otro tipo de factores relacionados con la cinética de disolución de los minerales, como responsables de estas diferencias. El análisis de la influencia de los principales factores que controlan la tasa de disolución de los minerales y, más en concreto, de los feldespatos, muestra como las diferencias de temperatura de las soluciones en profundidad son capaces de justificar el distinto grado de evolución geoquÃmica, incluso en soluciones con tiempos de residencia muy similares
Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of the Expanding Nebular Remnant of the Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuchi (2006)
We report Hubble Space Telescope imaging obtained 155 days after the 2006
outburst of RS Ophiuchi. We detect extended emission in both [O III] and [Ne V]
lines. In both lines, the remnant has a double ring structure. The E-W
orientation and total extent of these structures (580+-50 AU at d=1.6kpc) is
consistent with that expected due to expansion of emitting regions imaged
earlier in the outburst at radio wavelengths. Expansion at high velocity
appears to have been roughly constant in the E-W direction (v_{exp} = 3200+-300
km/s in the plane of the sky), with tentative evidence of deceleration N-S. We
present a bipolar model of the remnant whose inclination is consistent with
that of the central binary. The true expansion velocities of the polar
components are then v = 5600+-1100 km/s. We suggest that the bipolar morphology
of the remnant results from interaction of the outburst ejecta with a
circumstellar medium that is significantly denser in the equatorial regions of
the binary than at the poles. This is also consistent with observations of
shock evolution in the X-ray and the possible presence of dust in the infrared.
Furthermore, it is in line with models of the shaping of planetary nebulae with
close binary central systems, and also with recent observations relating to the
progenitors of Type Ia supernovae, for which recurrent novae are a proposed
candidate. Our observations also reveal more extended structures to the S and E
of the remnant whose possible origin is briefly discussed.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
Application of mineralogical, petrological and geochemical tools for evaluating the palaeohdrogeological evolution of the PADAMOT study sites
The role of Work Package (WP) 2 of the PADAMOT project – ‘Palaeohydrogeological Data
Measurements’ - has been to study late-stage fracture mineral and water samples from
groundwater systems in Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, with the aim
of understanding the recent palaeohydrogeological evolution of these groundwater systems. In
particular, the project sought to develop and evaluate methods for obtaining information about
past groundwater evolution during the Quaternary (about the last 2 million years) by examining
how the late-stage mineralization might record mineralogical, petrographical and geochemical
evidence of how the groundwater system may have responded to past geological and
climatological changes.
Fracture-flow groundwater systems at six European sites were studied:
• Melechov Hill, in the Bohemian Massif of the Czech Republic: a shallow (0-100 m)
dilute groundwater flow system within the near-surface weathering zone in fractured
granitic rocks;
• Cloud Hill, in the English Midlands: a (~100 m) shallow dilute groundwater flow system
in fractured and dolomitized Carboniferous limestone;
• Los Ratones, in southwest Spain: an intermediate depth (0-500 m) dilute groundwater
flow system in fractured granitic rocks;
• Laxemar, in southeast Sweden: a deep (0-1000 m) groundwater flow system in fractured
granitic rocks. This is a complex groundwater system with potential recharge and
flushing by glacial, marine, lacustrine and freshwater during the Quaternary;
• Sellafield, northwest England: a deep (0-2000 m) groundwater flow system in fractured
Ordovician low-grade metamorphosed volcaniclastic rocks and discontinuous
Carboniferous Limestone, overlain by a Permo-Triassic sedimentary sequence with
fracture and matrix porosity. This is a complex coastal groundwater system with deep
hypersaline sedimentary basinal brines, and deep saline groundwaters in crystalline
basement rocks, overlain by a shallow freshwater aquifer system. The site was glaciated
several times during the Quaternary and may have been affected by recharge from glacial
meltwater;
• Dounreay, northeast Scotland: a deep (0-1400 m) groundwater flow system in fractured
Precambrian crystalline basement overlain by fractured Devonian sedimentary rocks.
This is within the coastal discharge area of a complex groundwater system, comprising
deep saline groundwater hosted in crystalline basement, overlain by a fracture-controlled
freshwater sedimentary aquifer system. Like Sellafield, this area experienced glaciation
and may potentially record the impact of glacial meltwater recharge.
In addition, a study has been made of two Quaternary sedimentary sequences in Andalusia in
southeastern Spain to provide a basis of estimating the palaeoclimatic history of the region that
could be used in any reconstruction of the palaeoclimatic history at the Los Ratones site:
• The Cúllar-Baza lacustrine sequence records information about precipitation and
palaeotemperature regimes, derived largely from the analysis of the stable isotope (δ18O
and δ13C) signatures from biogenic calcite (ostracod shells).
• The Padul Peat Bog sequence provided information on past vegetation cover and
palaeogroundwater inputs based on the study of fossil pollen and biomarkers as proxies
for past climate change.
Following on from the earlier EC 4th Framework EQUIP project, the focus of the PADAMOT
studies has been on calcite mineralization. Calcite has been identified as a late stage mineral, closely associated with hydraulically-conductive fractures in the present-day groundwater
systems at the Äspö-Laxemar, Sellafield, Dounreay and Cloud Hill sites. At Los Ratones and
Melechov sites late-stage mineralization is either absent or extremely scarce, and both the
quantity and fine crystal size of any late-stage fracture mineralization relevant to Quaternary
palaeohydrogeological investigations is difficult to work with. The results from the material
investigated during the PADAMOT studies indicate that the fracture fillings at these sites are
related to hydrothermal activity, and so do not have direct relevance as Quaternary indicators.
Neoformed calcite has not been found at these two sites at the present depth of the investigations.
Furthermore, the HCO3
- concentration in all the Los Ratones groundwaters is mainly controlled
by complex carbonate dissolution. The carbonate mineral saturation indices do not indicate
precipitation conditions, and this is consistent with the fact that neoformed calcite, ankerite or
dolomite have not been observed petrographically
