A Note on Solid-State Maxwell Demon
Starting from 2002, at least two kinds of laboratory-testable, solid-state
Maxwell demons have been proposed that utilize the electric field energy of an
open-gap n-p junction and that seem to challenge the validity of the Second Law
of Thermodynamics. In the present paper we present some arguments against the

Wireless Bidirectional Relaying using Physical Layer Network Coding with Heterogeneous PSK Modulation
In bidirectional relaying using Physical Layer Network Coding (PLNC), it is
generally assumed that users employ same modulation schemes in the Multiple
Access phase. However, as observed by Zhang et al., it may not be desirable for
the users to always use the same modulation schemes, particularly when
user-relay channels are not equally strong. Such a scheme is called
Heterogeneous PLNC. However, the approach in [1] uses the computationally
intensive Closest Neighbour Clustering (CNC) algorithm to find the network
coding maps to be applied at the relay. Also, the treatment is specific to
certain cases of heterogeneous modulations. In this paper, we show that, when
users employ heterogeneous but symmetric PSK modulations, the network coding
maps and the mapping regions in the fade state plane can be obtained
analytically. Performance results are provided in terms of Relay Error Rate
(RER) and Bit Error Rate (BER).Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures and 3 table
Organosiloxane working fluids for the liquid droplet radiator
Siloxane-based working fluids for advanced space radiators requiring direct fluid exposure to the space environment are evaluated. Isolation of five candidate fluids by vacuum distillation from existing siloxane polymers is discussed. The five fluids recovered include a polydimethylsiloxane, three phenyl-containing siloxanes, and a methylhexylsiloxane. Vapor pressures and viscosities for the five fluids are reported over the temperature range of 250 to 400 K. Use of thermal-gravimetric analysis to reliably estimate vapor pressures of 10 to the -8 power Pascals is described. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polymethylphenylsiloxane (PMPS) are selected from the five candidate fluids based on favorable vapor pressure and viscosity, as well as perceived stability in low-Earth orbit environments. Characterization of these fluids by infrared spectroscopy, Si-29 NMR, gel-permeation chromatography, and liquid chromatography is presented. Both fluids consist of narrow molecular weight distributions, with average molecular weights of about 2500 for PDMS and 1300 for PMPS
Quantum Pieri rules for isotropic Grassmannians
We study the three point genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants on the
Grassmannians which parametrize non-maximal isotropic subspaces in a vector
space equipped with a nondegenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric form. We
establish Pieri rules for the classical cohomology and the small quantum
cohomology ring of these varieties, which give a combinatorial formula for the
product of any Schubert class with certain special Schubert classes. We also
give presentations of these rings, with integer coefficients, in terms of

Discrete concavity and the half-plane property
Murota et al. have recently developed a theory of discrete convex analysis
which concerns M-convex functions on jump systems. We introduce here a family
of M-concave functions arising naturally from polynomials (over a field of
generalized Puiseux series) with prescribed non-vanishing properties. This
family contains several of the most studied M-concave functions in the
literature. In the language of tropical geometry we study the tropicalization
of the space of polynomials with the half-plane property, and show that it is
strictly contained in the space of M-concave functions. We also provide a short
proof of Speyer's hive theorem which he used to give a new proof of Horn's
conjecture on eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices.Comment: 14 pages. The proof of Theorem 4 is corrected
