Spectroscopic Abundances and Membership in the Wolf 630 Moving Group
The concept of kinematic assemblages evolving from dispersed stellar clusters has remained contentious since Eggenâs initial formulation of moving groups in the 1960s. With high-quality parallaxes from the Hipparcos space astrometry mission, distance measurements for thousands of nearby, seemingly isolated stars are currently available. With these distances, a high-resolution spectroscopic abundance analysis can be brought to bear on the alleged members of these moving groups. If a structure is a relic of an open cluster, the members can be expected to be monolithic in age and abundance in as much as homogeneity is observed in young open clusters. In this work, we have examined 34 putative members of the proposed Wolf 630 moving group using high-resolution stellar spectroscopy. The stars of the sample have been chemically tagged to determine abundance homogeneity and conïŹrm the existence of a homogeneous subsample of 19 stars. Fitting the homogeneous subsample with YaleâYonsei isochrones yields a single evolutionary sequence of âŒ2.7 ± 0.5 Gyr. It is concluded that this 19 star subsample of the Wolf 630 moving group sample of 34 stars could represent a dispersed cluster with an [Fe/H]=â0.01 ± 0.02 and an age of 2.7 ± 0.5 Gyr. In addition, chemical abundances of Na and Al in giants are examined for indications of enhancements as observed in ïŹeld giants of old open clusters; overexcitation/ionization effects are explored in the cooler dwarfs of the sample; and oxygen is derived from the infrared triplet and the forbidden line at λ6300
Lithium in the Upper Centaurus Lupus and Lower Centaurus Crux Subgroups of Scorpius-Centaurus
We utilize spectroscopically derived model atmosphere parameters and the
\ion{Li}{1} subordinate line and the doublet to
derive lithium abundances for 12 members of the Upper-Centaurus Lupus (UCL) and
Lower-Centaurus Crux (LCC) subgroups of the Scorpius Centaurus OB Association.
The results indicate any intrinsic Li scatter in our 0.9-1.4 stars
is limited to dex, consistent with the lack of dispersion in
stars in the 100 Myr Pleiades and 30-50 Myr IC 2391 and
2602 clusters. Both ab initio uncertainty estimates and the derived abundances
themselves indicate that the 6104 line yields abundances with
equivalent or less scatter than is found from the 6708 doublet as a
result of lower uncertainties for the subordinate feature, a result of low
sensitivity to broadening in the subordinate feature. Because NLTE corrections
are less susceptible to changes in surface gravity and/or metallicity for the
6104 {\AA} line, the subordinate Li feature is preferred for deriving lithium
abundances in young Li-rich stellar association stars with K.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal (abstract shortened

Abundances of Stars with Planets: Trends with Condensation Temperature
Precise abundances of 18 elements have been derived for ten stars known to
host giant planets from high signal-to-noise ratio, high-resolution echelle
spectroscopy. Internal uncertainties in the derived abundances are typically
<=0.05 dex. The stars in our sample have all been previously shown to have
abundances that correlate with the condensation temperature (T_c) of the
elements in the sense of increasing abundances with increasing T_c; these
trends have been interpreted as evidence that the stars may have accreted
H-depleted planetary material. Our newly derived abundances also correlate
positively with T_c, although slopes of linear least-square fits to the
[m/H]-T_c relations for all but two stars are smaller here than in previous
studies. When considering the refractory elements (T_c > 900 K) only, which may
be more sensitive to planet formation processes, the sample can be separated
into a group with positive slopes (four stars) and a group with flat or
negative slopes (six stars). The four stars with positive slopes have very
close-in giant planets (three at 0.05 AU) and slopes that fall above the
general Galactic chemical evolution trend. We suggest that these stars have
accreted refractory-rich planet material but not to the extent that would
increase significantly the overall stellar metallicity. The flat or negative
slopes of the remaining six stars are consistent with recent suggestions of a
planet formation signature, although we show that the trends may be the result
of Galactic chemical evolution.Comment: 64 pages (single column), 5 figures, 10 tables. Accepted by Ap
5-HT2C Receptors Localize to Dopamine and GABA Neurons in the Rat Mesoaccumbens Pathway
The serotonin 5-HT2C receptor (5-HT2CR) is localized to the limbic-corticostriatal circuit, which plays an integral role in mediating attention, motivation, cognition, and reward processes. The 5-HT2CR is linked to modulation of mesoaccumbens dopamine neurotransmission via an activation of Îł-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). However, we recently demonstrated the expression of the 5-HT2CR within dopamine VTA neurons suggesting the possibility of a direct influence of the 5-HT2CR upon mesoaccumbens dopamine output. Here, we employed double-label fluorescence immunochemistry with the synthetic enzymes for dopamine (tyrosine hydroxylase; TH) and GABA (glutamic acid decarboxylase isoform 67; GAD-67) and retrograde tract tracing with FluoroGold (FG) to uncover whether dopamine and GABA VTA neurons that possess 5-HT2CR innervate the nucleus accumbens (NAc). The highest numbers of FG-labeled cells were detected in the middle versus rostral and caudal levels of the VTA, and included a subset of TH- and GAD-67 immunoreactive cells, of which >50% also contained 5-HT2CR immunoreactivity. Thus, we demonstrate for the first time that the 5-HT2CR colocalizes in DA and GABA VTA neurons which project to the NAc, describe in detail the distribution of NAc-projecting GABA VTA neurons, and identify the colocalization of TH and GAD-67 in the same NAc-projecting VTA neurons. These data suggest that the 5-HT2CR may exert direct influence upon both dopamine and GABA VTA output to the NAc. Further, the indication that a proportion of NAc-projecting VTA neurons synthesize and potentially release both dopamine and GABA adds intriguing complexity to the framework of the VTA and its postulated neuroanatomical roles
Uniform Atmospheric Retrieval Analysis of Ultracool Dwarfs I : Characterizing Benchmarks, Gl570D and HD3651B
Michael Line, et al, 'UNIFORM ATMOSPHERIC RETRIEVAL ANALYSIS OF ULTRACOOL DWARFS. I. CHARACTERIZING BENCHMARKS, Gl 570D AND HD 3651B', The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 802 (2), July 2015, doi: https://doi.org/10.1088/0004-637X/807/2/183, published by IOP.Interpreting the spectra of brown dwarfs is key to determining the fundamental physical and chemical processes occurring in their atmospheres. Powerful Bayesian atmospheric retrieval tools have recently been applied to both exoplanet and brown dwarf spectra to tease out the thermal structures and molecular abundances to understand those processes. In this manuscript we develop a significantly upgraded retrieval method and apply it to the SpeX spectral library data of two benchmark late T-dwarfs, Gl570D and HD3651B, to establish the validity of our upgraded forward model parameterization and Bayesian estimator. Our retrieved metallicities, gravities, and effective temperature are consistent with the metallicity and presumed ages of the systems. We add the carbon-to-oxygen ratio as a new dimension to benchmark systems and find good agreement between carbon-to-oxygens ratio derived in the brown dwarfs and the host stars. Furthermore, we have for the first time unambiguously determined the presence of ammonia in the low-resolution spectra of these two late T-dwarfs. We also show that the retrieved results are not significantly impacted by the possible presence of clouds, though some quantities are significantly impacted by uncertainties in photometry. This investigation represents a watershed study in establishing the utility of atmospheric retrieval approaches on brown dwarf spectra.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
A short history of the 5-HT2C receptor: from the choroid plexus to depression, obesity and addiction treatment
This paper is a personal account on the discovery and characterization of the 5-HT2C receptor (first known as the 5- HT1C receptor) over 30 years ago and how it translated into a number of unsuspected features for a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) and a diversity of clinical applications. The 5-HT2C receptor is one of the most intriguing members of the GPCR superfamily. Initially referred to as 5-HT1CR, the 5-HT2CR was discovered while studying the pharmacological features and the distribution of [3H]mesulergine-labelled sites, primarily in the brain using radioligand binding and slice autoradiography. Mesulergine (SDZ CU-085), was, at the time, best defined as a ligand with serotonergic and dopaminergic properties. Autoradiographic studies showed remarkably strong [3H]mesulergine-labelling to the rat choroid plexus. [3H]mesulergine-labelled sites had pharmacological properties different from, at the time, known or purported 5-HT receptors. In spite of similarities with 5-HT2 binding, the new binding site was called 5-HT1C because of its very high affinity for 5-HT itself. Within the following 10 years, the 5-HT1CR (later named 5- HT2C) was extensively characterised pharmacologically, anatomically and functionally: it was one of the first 5-HT receptors to be sequenced and cloned. The 5-HT2CR is a GPCR, with a very complex gene structure. It constitutes a rarity in theGPCR family: many 5-HT2CR variants exist, especially in humans, due to RNA editing, in addition to a few 5-HT2CR splice variants. Intense research led to therapeutically active 5-HT2C receptor ligands, both antagonists (or inverse agonists) and agonists: keeping in mind that a number of antidepressants and antipsychotics are 5- HT2CR antagonists/inverse agonists. Agomelatine, a 5-HT2CR antagonist is registered for the treatment of major depression. The agonist Lorcaserin is registered for the treatment of aspects of obesity and has further potential in addiction, especially nicotine/ smoking. There is good evidence that the 5-HT2CR is involved in spinal cord injury-induced spasms of the lower limbs, which can be treated with 5-HT2CR antagonists/inverse agonists such as cyproheptadine or SB206553. The 5-HT2CR may play a role in schizophrenia and epilepsy. Vabicaserin, a 5-HT2CR agonist has been in development for the treatment of schizophrenia and obesity, but was stopped. As is common, there is potential for further indications for 5-HT2CR ligands, as suggested by a number of preclinical and/or genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on depression, suicide, sexual dysfunction, addictions and obesity. The 5-HT2CR is clearly affected by a number of established antidepressants/antipsychotics and may be one of the culprits in antipsychotic-induced weight gain
