Forensic Fisheries Science: Literature Review and Research Suggestions
Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in litigation against the National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA. Litigation may affect personnel throughout the agency, including scientists, whose work is often directly or indirectly influenced by complex legal requirements, but who may not be in a position to comment or engage in public dialogue. It may be helpful for scientists and other agency
personnel to join the ongoing discussion in the legal community regarding the interface of science and law. This paper provides a starting point with a selected introduction
to relevant legal literature in this area. It uses the phrase “forensic fisheries science” to describe the application of science to legal requirements in the fishery management context. It concludes with suggestions for future research that could assist NMFS scientists as they grapple with the challenge of using science to help the agency meet its complex legal requirements. Modeling and Validation of Temperature and Concentration for Rapid Freeze Prototyping
Rapid Freeze Prototyping is a solid freeform fabrication process that uses water as the main build
material in a cold environment to create three-dimensional parts. A eutectic sugar-water solution
(C6H12O6 – H2O) has been used as a sacrificial material in order to create complex 3D parts with
features such as overhangs. A study of the interaction of the build and support materials is
presented in this paper. The temperature of both materials during deposition and subsequent
cooling is modeled using a semi-empirical model and a theoretical model. A concentration
model is used to predict the concentration in the fabricated parts around the interface of the two
materials with predicted temperatures as input. Experiments are conducted to validate both the

Performance of the Lester battery charger in electric vehicles
Tests are performed on an improved battery charger. The primary purpose of the testing is to develop test methodologies for battery charger evaluation. Tests are developed to characterize the charger in terms of its charge algorithm and to assess the effects of battery initial state of charge and temperature on charger and battery efficiency. Tests show this charger to be a considerable improvement in the state of the art for electric vehicle chargers
SOTXTSTREAM: Density-based self-organizing clustering of text streams
A streaming data clustering algorithm is presented building upon the density-based selforganizing stream clustering algorithm SOSTREAM. Many density-based clustering algorithms are limited by their inability to identify clusters with heterogeneous density. SOSTREAM addresses this limitation through the use of local (nearest neighbor-based) density determinations. Additionally, many stream clustering algorithms use a two-phase clustering approach. In the first phase, a micro-clustering solution is maintained online, while in the second phase, the micro-clustering solution is clustered offline to produce a macro solution. By performing self-organization techniques on micro-clusters in the online phase, SOSTREAM is able to maintain a macro clustering solution in a single phase. Leveraging concepts from SOSTREAM, a new density-based self-organizing text stream clustering algorithm, SOTXTSTREAM, is presented that addresses several shortcomings of SOSTREAM. Gains in clustering performance of this new algorithm are demonstrated on several real-world text stream datasets

Study on Incorporating Support Material in Rapid Freeze Prototyping
Rapid Freeze Prototyping (RFP) is a rapid prototyping method that uses water freezing
into ice to make three-dimensional parts. Each layer of a geometry is deposited and allowed to
freeze before the next layer is added. Using a support material in RFP is a relatively new
addition to the process. Validating the successful use of a support material in conjunction with
the main build material of water is presented in this paper. The support material selected for use
is a eutectic sugar solution. The selection criteria, properties, and characteristics of the support
material are discussed. Of particular interest is the diffusion between the support and main build
material, which must be minimized to an acceptable level for producing good quality,

Probing quantum nanostructures with near-field optical microscopy and (vice versa)
A theory is presented to show how near-field optical microscopy can be used
to probe quantum nanostructures. Calculations are done for a quantum dot.
Results for different tip/dot configurations and sizes show that near-field
excitation can enhance light-hole transitions, excite selection-rule breaking
transitions with rates comparable to allowed transitions, and map electron-hole
pair wave functions. Conversely, dot response can be used to characterize tip

The significance of organic carbon and nutrient export from peatland-dominated landscapes subject to disturbance, a stoichiometric perspective
The terrestrial-aquatic interface is a crucial environment in which to consider the fate of exported terrestrial carbon in the aquatic system. Here the fate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) may be controlled by nutrient availability. However, peat-dominated headwater catchments are normally of low nutrient status and thus there is little data on how DOC and nutrient export co-varies. We present nutrient and DOC data for two UK catchments dominated by peat headwaters. One, Whitelee, is undergoing development for Europe's largest windfarm. Glen Dye by comparison is relatively undisturbed. At both sites there are significant linear relationships between DOC and soluble reactive phosphorus and nitrate concentrations in the drainage waters. However, inter-catchment differences exist. Changes in the pattern of nutrient and carbon export at Whitelee reveal that landscape disturbance associated with windfarm development impacts the receiving waters, and that nutrient export does not increase in a stoichiometric manner that will promote increase in microbial biomass but rather supports aquatic respiration. In turn greater CO2 efflux may prevail. Hence disturbance of terrestrial carbon stores may impact the both the aquatic and gaseous carbon cycle. We suggest estimates of aquatic carbon export should inform the decision-making process prior to development in ecosystems and catchments with high terrestrial carbon storage
